A systematic review of emotional facial expression recognition in patients with mild cognitive impairment.

BackgroundEmotional facial expression recognition (EFER) plays a key role in social cognition and may be compromised in mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a heterogeneous condition often considered a prodromal stage of dementia. However, evidence remains heterogeneous, and the influence of demographic, cognitive, and methodological factors is unclear.ObjectiveThis systematic review aims to synthesize recent findings on EFER performance in individuals with MCI, examining the presence and potential moderators of emotion recognition impairments.MethodsFollowing PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic

Preliminary comparison of four factor structures of facial emotion recognition in individuals with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with schizophrenia tend to have moderate-to-severe deficits in facial emotion recognition. To characterize the deficits and inform future interventions, measures with robust structural validity are needed. Four structures have been proposed: the 7-domain structure (happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, fear, surprise, and neutral), the 1-domain structure (an overall ability), the 2-domain structure (threatening and non-threatening faces, with surprise excluded), and the 4-domain structure (positive, negative, unexpected, and neutral). This study compared the four candidat

Facial emotion recognition and empathy for pain in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Objective: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with cognitive decline, but its impact on social cognition remains poorly understood. This study investigated whether individuals with T2DM exhibit impairments in facial emotion recognition and empathy for pain, two domains crucial for daily interpersonal functioning that are often overlooked in neuropsychological assessments. Method: Seventy-six participants (37 with T2DM and 39 matched healthy controls) completed two validated social cognition tasks: a dynamic Facial Emotion Morphing Test and an empathy-for-pain task involving 25 anima

Anosognosia for limb and bucco-facial apraxia as inferred from the recognition of gestural errors.

Anosognosia is a multifaceted syndrome characterized by a lack of awareness of motor, cognitive, or emotional deficits. While most studies have focused on basic motor disorders such as hemiplegia, only recently, the issue of whether anosognosia also concerns higher-order motor disorders like apraxia has been addressed. Here, we explore the existence of a specific form of anosognosia for apraxia in forty patients with uni-hemispheric vascular lesions. The patients were requested to imitate actions involving upper limb or bucco-facial body parts and then judge their performance. Successively, th

Effects of Early Neglect Experience on Recognition and Processing of Facial Expressions: A Systematic Review.

Background: Child neglect is highly prevalent and associated with a series of biological and social consequences. Early neglect may alter the recognition of emotional faces, but its precise impact remains unclear. We aim to review and analyze data from recent literature about recognition and processing of facial expressions in individuals with history of childhood neglect. Methods: We conducted a systematic review using PubMed, PsycINFO, ScIELO and EMBASE databases in the search of studies for the past 10 years. Results: In total, 14 studies were selected and critically reviewed. A heterogenei

The effects of acute alcohol intoxication on the cognitive mechanisms underlying false facial recognition.

RATIONALE: False face recognition rates are sometimes higher when faces are learned while under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol myopia theory (AMT) proposes that acute alcohol intoxication during face learning causes people to attend to only the most salient features of a face, impairing the encoding of less salient facial features. Yet, there is currently no direct evidence to support this claim. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to test whether acute alcohol intoxication impairs face learning by causing subjects to attend to a salient (i.e., distinctive) facial feature over other facial featu

Assessing the utility of a virtual environment for enhancing facial affect recognition in adolescents with autism.

Teenagers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and age-matched controls participated in a dynamic facial affect recognition task within a virtual reality (VR) environment. Participants identified the emotion of a facial expression displayed at varied levels of intensity by a computer generated avatar. The system assessed performance (i.e., accuracy, confidence ratings, response latency, and stimulus discrimination) as well as how participants used their gaze to process facial information using an eye tracker. Participants in both groups were similarly accurate at basic facial affect recognition

Predicting the accuracy of facial affect recognition: the interaction of child maltreatment and intellectual functioning.

Previous research demonstrates that both child maltreatment and intellectual performance contribute uniquely to the accurate identification of facial affect by children and adolescents. The purpose of this study was to extend this research by examining whether child maltreatment affects the accuracy of facial recognition differently at varying levels of intellectual functioning. A sample of maltreated (n=50) and nonmaltreated (n=56) adolescent females, 14 to 19 years of age, was recruited to participate in this study. Participants completed demographic and study-related questionnaires and inte

The development and evaluation of a computer-based program to test and to teach the recognition of facial affect.

Autism is a chronic pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by the early onset of social and communicative impairments as well as restricted, ritualized, stereotypic behavior. The endophenotype of autism includes neuropsychological deficits, for instance a lack of "Theory of Mind" and problems recognizing facial affect. In this study, we report the development and evaluation of a computer-based program to teach and test the ability to identify basic facially expressed emotions. 10 adolescent or adult subjects with high-functioning autism or Asperger-syndrome were included in the in

[The recognition of the facial expression of emotions by patients with endogenous depression (clinico-psychophysiological research)].

The recognition of facial emotional expression in depressed patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and slow progressive schizophrenia (SPS) in acute state and in remission was studied in comparison with healthy persons. All the subjects were right-handed. The drawings of sad, neutral and happy faces followed by masking stimulus were displayed in the center field and in the left or right hemifield of vision on the computer screen for 80 ms. All the depressed patients revealed marked impairment of facial emotion recognition, especially for negative on, and disturbances of hemisphere asymm

Recognition of facial expressions of emotion by persons with mental retardation. A matched comparison study.

Children and adults with mental retardation were tested on their ability to recognize facial expressions of emotion. The sample consisted of 80 children and adults with mental retardation and a control group of 80 nonhandicapped children matched on mental age and gender. Ekman and Friesen's normed photographs of the six basic emotions (anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise) were used in a recognition task of facial expressions. Subjects were individually read two-sentence stories identifying a specific emotion, presented with a randomized array of the six photographs of the ba

Hemispheric asymmetry in the processing of high and low spatial frequencies: a facial recognition task.

The research investigated the relationship between spatial frequency and visual field in a facial recognition task. Faces of neutral affect (Ekman, 1979) were tachistoscopically presented to the right or left visual field. The faces were presented alone, or masked with square wave gratings of 1, 24, or 48 cycles/degree, for a duration of 10 msec. Accuracy in recognizing each target face from a group of five served as the dependent measure. Subjects were 15 males and 15 females. ANOVA results included a frequency x visual field interaction effect (p less than .001). As was hypothesized, LVF err

Multimodal depression recognition and analysis: Facial expression and body posture changes via emotional stimuli.

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies have shown that facial expressions and body posture in depressed patients differ significantly from those of healthy individuals. Combining relevant behavioral features with artificial intelligence technology can effectively improve the efficiency of depression detection, thereby assisting doctors in early identification of patients. This study aims to develop an end-to-end multimodal recognition model combining facial expressions and body posture via deep learning techniques, enabling rapid preliminary screening of depression. METHODS: We invited 146 subjects (73

Facial recognition in late-life insomnia: Preserved positivity bias and associations with negative emotions.

BACKGROUND: Facial emotion recognition (FER) is essential for social functioning. Although aging is typically associated with reduced FER performance, recognition of positive emotions (e.g., happiness) often remains intact-an effect attributed to an age-related positivity bias. However, insomnia, which is highly prevalent in older adults, may disrupt emotional processing and compromise this typically well-preserved component of FER. Yet, few studies have examined the relationship between insomnia and FER specifically in late life. METHODS: Fifty-four older adults with insomnia and fifty healt

EmoTrans attention based emotion recognition using EEG signals and facial analysis with expert validation.

Emotion recognition via EEG signals and facial analysis becomes one of the key aspects of human-computer interaction and affective computing, enabling scientists to gain insight into the behavior of humans. Classic emotion recognition methods usually rely on controlled stimuli, such as music and images, which does not allow for ecological validity and scope. This paper proposes the EmoTrans model, which uses the DEAP dataset to analyze physiological signals and facial video recordings. It consisted of EEG recordings from 32 viewers of 40 one-minute movie clips and facial videos from 22 partici

"I cannot see your fear!" Altered recognition of fearful facial expressions in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: The evidence about facial emotion recognition in anorexia nervosa as the role of alexithymic traits on this emotional ability is conflicting and heterogeneous. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the capability of recognizing facial expressions of two primary emotions, fear, and anger, in the context of anorexia nervosa. METHODS: Women affected by anorexia nervosa were compared with healthy weight women in a well-established implicit facial emotion recognition task. Both reaction time and level of accuracy were computed. Moreover, the individual levels of alexithymia were assessed through a s
