Molecular detection of Toxoplasma gondii in feathered game intended for human consumption in the Czech Republic.

Toxoplasma gondii is an important ubiquitous protozoan parasite, which can infect almost all warm-blooded vertebrates, including humans. The diagnosis of T. gondii infection is crucial for the prevention, surveillance, and control of its transmission. Here, a triplex real-time PCR assay targeting the B1 gene and 529rep element was used to determine the presence of T. gondii in feathered game (Anas platyrhynchos and Phasianus colchicus) hunted in the Czech Republic. The prevalence of T. gondii was 5.4% in wild ducks (n = 280) and 3.4% in common pheasants (n = 350). Additionally, genotyping of 2

Chronic bird fancier's lung presenting with acute exacerbation due to use of a feather duvet.

A 67-year-old man was admitted due to fever and exertional dyspnea. He used to raise budgerigars and hill mynahs from 1980 to 1988. He was diagnosed as having chronic bird fancier's lung (BFL) based on a positive peripheral lymphocyte proliferation to pigeon serum in 1994. His disease was stable until 2000. Three months before admission he became a daily user of a feather duvet. A chest CT showed newly-developed peribronchial ground-glass opacities and preexisting honeycombing. Inhalation provocation test was positive. Administration of steroids improved his condition. He has been well after r

First report on Cryptococcus laurentii associated with feather loss in a glossy starling (Lamprotornis chalybaeus).

Although Cryptococcus laurentii has been isolated from fresh droppings and cloaca samples from feral pigeons, it has never before been associated with an actual disease condition in birds. This case study deals with the first report on C. laurentii associated with feather loss in a glossy starling (Lamprotornis chalybaeus). The bird exhibited patchy feather loss, especially around the back and beak area, and greyish crusts sticking quite firmly to the underlying skin. The feathers had a greasy appearance and disseminated a musty odour. Treatment was installed with fluconazole in the drinking w…

PFAS concentrations and compositional profiles in great tit (Parus major) feathers, faecal samples and blood plasma: Implications for non-invasive monitoring.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread in our environment, and have the ability to bioaccumulate in biota. To monitor local PFAS contamination, often bioindicator species are used, of which the great tit is a frequently studied species. To be able to monitor these compounds, generally invasive sampling techniques are used (e.g. blood plasma, feathers). To this day, only a few studies have analysed PFAS in the faeces of wild birds, which were all performed on aquatic birds, and only one of these looked at the suitability of faeces samples to replace blood sampling. Therefore,…

Multi-residues UHPLC-MS/MS analysis of 53 antibacterial compounds in poultry feathers as an analytical tool in food safety assurance.

Under the EU official monitoring programs, the antibiotics are controlled in tissues of food producing animals. However, regarding the overuse of medicines in veterinary practice, there is a strong need to find an alternative to post-mortem analysis of antibiotics. The use of feathers, as an unconventional matrix, enable to control of birds treatment during breeding. Thus, a novel ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the analysis of 53 compounds from 11 groups of antibacterials, including penicillins, cephalosporins, macrolides, tetracyclines, quinol…

How far north are migrant birds transporting the tick Ixodes scapularis in Canada? Insights from stable hydrogen isotope analyses of feathers.

Lyme disease is emerging in Canada because of northward range expansion of the tick vector Ixodes scapularis. It is hypothesised that I. scapularis feeding on passerine birds migrating north in spring are important in founding new I. scapularis populations leading to northward range expansion. However, there are no studies on how far north I. scapularis may be carried, only inferences from passive tick surveillance. We used stable hydrogen isotope (δ(2)H) analysis of rectrices collected from northward migrating, I. scapularis-carrying, passerine birds captured in Canada to estimate how far nor

Alterations in the infrared spectral signature of avian feathers reflect potential chemical exposure: a pilot study comparing two sites in Pakistan.

Chemical contamination of ecosystems is a global issue with evidence that pollutants impact on living organisms in a harmful fashion. Developing sensor approaches that would allow the derivation of biomarkers or signatures of effect in target sentinel organisms and monitor environmental chemical contamination in a high throughput manner is of utmost importance. As biomolecules absorb infrared (IR), signature vibrational spectra related to structure and function can be derived. In light of this, we tested the notion that IR spectra of bird feathers might reflect environmental chemical contamina…

Mercury in tree swallow food, eggs, bodies, and feathers at Acadia National Park, Maine, and an EPA superfund site, Ayer, Massachusetts.

We monitored nest boxes during 1997-1999 at Acadia National Park, Mt. Desert Island, ME and at an old-field site in Orono, ME to determine mercury (Hg) uptake in tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) eggs, tissues, and food boluses. Also, in 1998-1999 we monitored nest boxes at Grove Pond and Plow Shop Pond at a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund site in Ayer, MA. We recorded breeding success at all locations. On average among locations, total mercury (THg) biomagnified 2 to 4-fold from food to eggs and 9 to 18-fold from food to feathers. These are minimum values because the proportio…

Spent hemp biomass in broiler diets: effects on performance, meat quality, expression of genes in internal adipose tissue, and corticosterone in feathers.

Prior use of spent hemp biomass (SHB), a byproduct of cannabidiol extraction, has shown promise as a low-cost livestock feed in ruminant die … ipose tissue, specifically for males. Birds receiving 20% SHB also had higher corticosterone in the feathers, indicating possibly higher chronic stress. Overall, dietary SHB inclusion at levels ≥10% negatively affected broiler performance, meat quality, lipid metabolism, and corticosterone in feathers (as a chronic stress indicator), whereas inclusion at 5 …

The Proof Is in the Plumage: A Method for Detecting Dietary Ethanol Exposure in Birds by Testing for Ethyl Glucuronide in Feathers.

AbstractEthanol is a naturally occurring molecule produced via fermentation of sugar-rich foods by yeast. Ethanol catabolism is followed by production of secondary metabolites such as ethyl glucuronide (EtG), which can be measured to provide a retrospective view of dietary exposure. To date, occurrence of this molecule has not been studied in vertebrates other than humans and several other mammalian taxa. Here, we describe a method of testing for the presence of EtG in bird feathers and livers using mass spectrometry. Birds that regularly consume fruit and nectar may accordingly be ingesting e…

Heavy Metal, Arsenic, and Selenium Concentrations in Bird Feathers from a Region in Southern China Impacted by Intensive Mining of Nonferrous Metals.

Heavy metal pollution is widespread in China, particularly in its mining regions. Mercury (Hg) concentrations in birds from Guizhou Province were recently reported to be above adverse effect levels, even in nonmining areas. We sampled birds to investigate whether Hg might be a threat near lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and tin (Sn) mines in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. We measured concentrations of 8 metals/metalloids in feathers of 627 resident birds representing 60 species sampled across 14 sites on 5 rivers. We found that Hg concentrations (mean ± standard deviation, 1.27 ± 2.02 ppm) were lower…

Enrichment Analysis of Differentially Expressed Genes During Feather Regeneration in Landes Geese (Anser anser).

Feathers are valuable by-products of the poultry industry, and their growth and development markedly have significant impact on economic returns. This study used Landes geese as a model to analyze the expression of core genes involved in feather regeneration and inflammation through comparative transcriptomic analyzes between plucked and unplucked skin tissues. In Landes geese aged 180 days (LD180), 624 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified at 5 days post-plucking (481 upregulated and 143 downregulated), whereas 1851 DEGs were identified at 14 days (1350 upregulated and 501 dow…

Presence of infectious novel goose parvovirus in the skin of duck carcass associated with residual feather burrs.

Since the emergence of short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS) among Cherry Valley ducks in China, duck carcasses associated with residual feather burrs have been frequently noticed. Novel goose parvovirus (NGPV) DNAs have been detected in the skins of these carcasses, however, whether NGPV present in these carcass skins is still viable remains unclear. In this study, skin samples were collected from duck carcasses with feather burrs at a local slaughterhouse. These samples were homogenized, and the sterilized homogenates were used to inoculate 9-day-old embryonated Cherry Valley duck eggs for

Gastric perforation associated with feather ingestion in American shad Alosa sapidissima housed in a multispecies habitat.

Pathological conditions associated with feather ingestion have rarely been reported in any species and not previously in fish. From 2013 to 2024, 87 American shad Alosa sapidissima collected from the wild for display purposes were housed in a multispecies habitat within a zoological facility, alongside various fish, invertebrate and bird species from the St. Lawrence Estuary (Quebec, Canada) ecozone. Since 2013, 81 of the 87 shad either died or were euthanized due to health issues, and macroscopic examinations were performed on 36 of these. Bird feathers were present within the gastric lumen i…

Do birds of a feather leave the nest together? The role of sibling personality similarity in the transition to adulthood.

Empirical evidences on intragenerational transmission of life course have been demonstrated and that interpersonal similarity may moderate the effect. In particular, siblings who are more similar in their demographic characteristics are more likely to follow each other's life course transitions. Focusing on parental home-leaving and building upon the social influence processes and similarity-attraction effects, this study investigates whether the association between siblings' departures from the parental home increases when they are similar in the Big Five personality traits, like similarity i

The effects of urban thermal heterogeneity and feather coloration on oxidative stress and metabolism of pigeons (Columba livia).

Urbanization stands out as a significant anthropogenic factor, exerting selective pressures on ecosystems and biotic components. A notable outcome of urbanization is thermal heterogeneity where the emergence of Urban Heat Islands is characterized by elevated air and surface temperatures compared to adjacent rural areas. Investigating the influence of thermal heterogeneity on urban animals could offer insights into how temperature variations can lead to phenotypic shifts. Urban pigeons (Columba livia) serve as an excellent model for studying urban thermal effects, given the melanism variations,

A feather cyst causing vertebral bone lysis and spinal cord compression in a Lohmann Brown layer.

A feather cyst in the cervical region which, through complications of inward growth, resulted in compression of the cervical spinal cord of a Lohmann Brown layer is described. It is postulated that expansion of the cyst exerted pressure on the adjacent cervical vertebra and through bone lysis created an opening through which the cyst protruded, thereby exerting pressure on the spinal cord. The affected spinal cord segment was reduced to a fifth of its normal diameter. The bird most likely died of starvation because of limb and neck paralysis and disorientation. Although the cause of the feathe
