Effectiveness and mechanism of cyanide remediation from contaminated soils using thermally activated persulfate.

Persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation processes have been frequently employed for contaminant remediation, but the effectiveness of PS oxidation for the elimination of cyanide-bearing contaminants from soil, and the underlying mechanisms, have rarely been explored. This study investigated the degradation of two iron-cyanide (Fe-CN) complexes (ferricyanide and ferrocyanide) with thermally activated PS via two remediation strategies, namely one-step oxidation (direct PS oxidation) and two-step oxidation (alkaline extraction followed by PS oxidation). The two-step oxidation process was more ef

Enzyme-Free Colorimetric Immunoassay for Protein Biomarker Enabled by Loading and Disassembly Behaviors of Polydopamine Nanoparticles.

In this work, a mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticle with biocompatible and reactive surface characteristics was desirably incorporated with high loading capacity and pH-induced disassembly-releasing behavior toward Fe(III) ions to develop an enzyme-free colorimetric immunoassay. The catechol functional network of PDA can act as a scaffold to coordinate with large amounts of Fe(III) ions to form the PDA-Fe(III) NPs whose coordination state can be tailored by changing the pH values. In detail, PDA-Fe(III) NPs can be maintained in a disassembled tri-coordinate state under alkaline con

Involvement of molecular oxygen in the donor-side photoinhibition of Mn-depleted photosystem II membranes.

It has been shown by Khorobrykh et al. (Biochemistry (Moscow) 67:683-688, 2002); Yanykin et al. (Biochim Biophys Acta 1797:516-523, 2010); Khorobrykh et al. (Biochemistry 50:10658-10665, 2011) that Mn-depleted photosystem II (PSII) membrane fragments are characterized by an enhanced oxygen photoconsumption on the donor side of PSII which is accompanied with hydroperoxide formation and it was suggested that the events are related to the oxidative photoinhibition of PSII. Experimental confirmation of this suggestion is presented in this work. The degree of photoinhibition was determined by the l

Post-fire surface water quality: comparison of fire retardant versus wildfire-related effects.

An understanding of the environmental effects of the use of wildland fire retardant is needed to provide informed decision-making regarding forest management. We compiled data from all post-fire surface water monitoring programs where the fire retardant constituents ammonia, phosphorus, and cyanide were measured, and data were available in the public domain. For streams near four major wildfires, we evaluated whether these chemicals originated primarily from fire or from retardant use. We compared measured concentrations in streams where chemical wildland fire retardant was applied with concen

[Determination of phosphine liberated in the storage of amorphous red phosphorus by headspace gas chromatography].

Formation and liberation of phosphine has been an important factor and concern in the safety of the storage of amorphous red phosphorous. A method was established for the analysis of phosphine, which was determined by gas chromatography with a flame photometric detector and a column of 3 mm i. d. x 2 m glass tube packed with GDX-102 stationary phase. An aliquot of 0.2 mL of the gas was injected by headspace sampler for the determination of the target compound with external standard quantitation. The retention time of phosphine was 1.62 min at 50 degrees C. The minimum detectable amount was 0.0

The history of iron in the brain.

Brain iron research began in the late nineteenth century when Zaleski (1886) made a quantitative analysis of one human brain and correlated iron levels with observations on stained slices and some microscopic sections. Gradually, the realization grew that the central nervous system (CNS) contained iron which was different from hemoglobin-iron. This non-heme iron was found in highest concentrations in globus pallidus, substantia nigra, red nucleus, and dentate nucleus. The enhancement of the traditional histochemical stain, potassium ferrocyanide in hydrochloric acid, by incubating the reacted

Rapid and receptor-free Prussian blue electrochemical sensor for the detection of pathogenic bacteria in blood.

Bloodstream bacterial infections, a major health concern due to rising sepsis rates, require prompt, cost-effective diagnostics. Conventional methods, like CO2-based transduction, face challenges such as volatile metabolites, delayed gas-phase signaling, and the need for additional instruments, whereas electrochemical sensors provide rapid, sensitive, and efficient real-time detection. In this study, we developed a bioreceptor-free Prussian blue (PB) sensor platform for real-time bacterial growth monitoring in blood culture. PB thin films were electrodeposited onto a screen-printed carbon elec

Prussian Blue/Calcium Peroxide Nanocomposites-Mediated Tumor Cell Iron Mineralization for Treatment of Experimental Lung Adenocarcinoma.

Current lung cancer diagnosis methods encounter delayed visual confirmation of tumor foci and low-resolution metrics in imaging findings, which delays the early treatment of tumors. Here, we developed a potent lung cancer imaging and treatment strategy centered around a nanotransformational concept of tumor iron mineralization in situ, which employs Prussian blue/calcium peroxide nanocomposites as a precursor. The resultant iron mineralization in tumor cells greatly facilitates the early and differential diagnosis of lung carcinoma from benign nodules via medical imaging, meanwhile introducing

A Label and Probe-Free Zika Virus Immunosensor Prussian Blue@carbon Nanotube-Based for Amperometric Detection of the NS2B Protein.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne infection, predominant in tropical and subtropical regions causing international concern due to the ZIKV disease having been associated with congenital disabilities, especially microcephaly and other congenital abnormalities in the fetus and newborns. Development of strategies that minimize the devastating impact by monitoring and preventing ZIKV transmission through sexual intercourse, especially in pregnant women, since no vaccine is yet available for the prevention or treatment, is critically important. ZIKV infection is generally asymptomatic and cross

In Situ Generation of Prussian Blue by MIL-53 (Fe) for Point-of-Care Testing of Butyrylcholinesterase Activity Using a Portable High-Throughput Photothermal Device.

Butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), the primary source of serum cholinesterase activity, is an indispensable biochemical marker for clinical diagnosis of liver function and organophosphorus poisoning. The requirement for bulky and expensive instruments represents a huge hindrance for point-of-care testing (POCT) of BuChE, especially in resource-limited settings. Herein, an easy-operated, economic, and portable photothermal (PT) biosensing platform for high-throughput BuChE detection was rationally designed. BuChE could "light up" the PT signal through in situ generation of Prussian blue (PB) by MIL

Integrating Prussian Blue Analog-Based Nanozyme and Online Visible Light Absorption Approach for Continuous Hydrogen Sulfide Monitoring in Brains of Living Rats.

The continuous detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is significant for revealing its role in the neuron protection and diagnosis of various diseases. In this study, a Prussian blue analog nanocubes (PBA NCs)-based oxidase-like mimic was synthesized and designed for continuous H2S monitoring in a visible light absorption-based online optical detection platform (OODP). A specific chemical reaction between H2S and the PBA NCs induce a decreasing oxidase-like activity of the PBA NCs, generating lower amounts of oxidized products of 3,3'5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and increasing the light intens

Acetylcholinesterase biosensor based on Prussian blue-modified electrode for detecting organophosphorous pesticides.

In this study, a novel acetylcholinesterase (AChE) biosensor was developed based on dual-layer membranes (chitosan membrane and prussian blue membrane) modifying glassy carbon electrode (GCE). A chitosan membrane was used for immobilizing AChE through glutaraldehyde cross-linking attachment to recognize pesticides selectively. A prussian blue (PB) membrane was electrodeposited on the surface of GCE to enhance electron transfer. Before the detection, the chitosan enzyme membrane was quickly fixed on the surface of PB/GCE with O-ring to prepare an amperometric AChE-PB/GCE sensor for organophosph

Prussian Blue Nanozyme Disrupts the Self-Reinforcing Loop of Tauopathy via Triple-Action Mechanism.

Tauopathies, such as Alzheimer's disease, are driven by a self-reinforcing pathological triad of tau aggregation, oxidative stress, and autophagy dysfunction, which remains inadequately addressed by single-target therapies. Herein, we engineer an ultrasmall Prussian blue nanozyme (PBzyme) as a multienzyme-mimetic and multi-target agent to concurrently disrupt this vicious cycle. PBzyme functions as a potent tau fibril inhibitor, with molecular dynamics simulations revealing high-affinity binding to β-sheet domains (-400 kJ/mol), thereby reducing tau phosphorylation and hippocampal burden. Prussian Blue Nanosphere/Fe-Metal Organic Frameworks/Ce Nanocomposite as a Colorimetric Sensing Platform for Direct Detection in Organophosphorus Pesticides in Fetal Bovine Serum.

Acute pesticide poisoning has resulted in several symptoms that threaten life safety. Thus, developing a rapid detection method would facilitate the identification of toxicants as soon as possible. This study presented an affordable and straightforward detection platform based on a core-shell structure nanocomposite of Prussian blue/Fe-metal-organic frameworks/Ce nanocomposite material, which exhibited peroxidase-like activity and multiple capture sites [marked as phosphate buffer (PB)/Fe-MOF/Ce NPs]. Fe3+ and Fe2+ are located at the core of PB nanoparticles (PB NPs), metal-porphyrin as a meta

In Situ Conversion of Atherosclerotic Plaques' Iron into Nanotheranostics.

The presence of a substantial necrotic core in atherosclerotic plaques markedly heightens the risk of rupture, a consequence of elevated iron levels that exacerbate oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, thereby sustaining a detrimental cycle of ferroptosis and inflammation. Concurrently targeting both ferroptosis and inflammation is crucial for the effective treatment of vulnerable plaques. In this study, we introduce gallium hexacyanoferrate nanoabsorption catalysts (GaHCF NACs) designed to disrupt this pathological cycle. GaHCF NACs function as highly efficient iron chelators with robust

Thermosensitive Hydrogel Incorporating Prussian Blue Nanoparticles Promotes Diabetic Wound Healing via ROS Scavenging and Mitochondrial Function Restoration.

Diabetic foot ulcer is a serious complication in diabetes patients, imposing a serious physical and economic burden to patients and to the healthcare system as a whole. Oxidative stress is thought to be a key driver of the pathogenesis of such ulcers. However, no antioxidant drugs have received clinical approval to date, underscoring the need for the further development of such medications. Hydrogels can be applied directly to the wound site, wherein they function to prevent infection and maintain local moisture concentrations, in addition to serving as a reservoir for the delivery of a range

March hemoglobinuria progressed to acute kidney injury after kendo practice: a case report.

BACKGROUND: March hemoglobinuria is caused by a hemolytic mechanism due to transient hematuria after physical exercise which, although rare, may lead to acute kidney injury. We report a case of a patient with march hemoglobinuria induced by kendo, which was diagnosed by the presence of Berlin blue iron staining in the proximal tubules through renal biopsy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old male complained of fever (37 °C), general malaise, and nausea after hard kendo sessions. Laboratory findings revealed indirect bilirubin dominant hyperbilirubinemia (total bilirubin 3.8 mg/dL), high lactate
