What is the role of firearms in nonfatal intimate partner violence? Findings from civil protective order case data.

BACKGROUND: Perpetrators of intimate partner violence (IPV) use firearms to injure, scare, and manipulate their partners. Abusers who have a firearm in their homes are more likely to threaten and/or kill their partner. To date, however, limited research documents the nature of IPV perpetrator firearm access or the prevalence of nonfatal firearm abuse behaviors. METHODS: Federal law restricts firearm access for IPV perpetrators in qualifying domestic violence protective order (DVPO) cases and information about firearms should be disclosed during the DVPO process. We used secondary data from ci…

A longitudinal ecological study of household firearm ownership and firearm-related deaths in the United States from 1999 through 2014: A specific focus on gender, race, and geographic variables.

Firearms have a longstanding tradition in the United States (US) and are viewed by many with iconic stature with regards to safety and personal freedom. Unfortunately, from a public health point of view, firearm-related deaths (FRDs) in the US have reached a crisis point with an estimated > 31,000 deaths and 74,000 nonfatal injuries resulting from firearms each year. This longitudinal ecological study analyzed variations in FRDs following firearm assaults (FAs) and law enforcement incidents involving a firearm (LEIF) in comparison to variations in household firearm ownership (HFO) among differ…

Rural Youth Firearm Exposure, Mental Health and Interest in Safety Education.

BACKGROUND: Rural communities in the US are experiencing the fastest growing rate of suicide, where firearms are the leading cause of death for youth ages 14 to 18. This study investigates the mental health and firearm exposure burden among this age group in rural Pennsylvania. METHODS: We analyzed survey results from 1570 high school students ages 14 to 19 to identify the local prevalence of firearm violence exposure. Logistic regression models estimated the association between exposure and depression among students and their interest in violence prevention education. RESULTS: Results indic…

Firearm sexual homicide offenders: Criminal careers, psychopathology, and offense conduct.

Most homicides are firearm-perpetrated, but in sexual homicide, offenders are more likely to utilize personal weapons (e.g., hands and feet), contact weapons (e.g., blunt object), or edged weapons (e.g., knife) to comport with their fantasy life, motivational states, and psychopathology. Despite these conceptual designations, epidemiological data suggest roughly 17% to 31% of sexual homicide offenders kill their victim with a firearm, yet we know surprisingly little about these offenders' criminal careers, psychopathology, and offense conduct. Drawing on a near-census of condemned capital murd

Firearm violence victimization in the United States: do drug preferences matter?

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether primary drug of choice is associated with risk of being injured or threatened by a gun. METHODS: The sample included 401 Medicaid-eligible adults receiving addiction treatment services in the Midwest United States who completed life-course history surveys between 2021 and 2023 as part of the Removing Barriers to Recovery randomized controlled trial. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Bivariate analyses showed marginally and statistically significant differences in firearm victimization risk between individuals identifying alcoh

Racialized economic segregation and youth firearm carriage: community violence as a mediator.

Firearm carriage poses a significant public health challenge, especially for youth (ages 14-24) living in predominantly Black communities that endured racial and economic segregation. Structural racism is a determinant of fatal and nonfatal firearm assaults, but the influence of structural racism on youth firearm carriage has received limited attention. Our study examines whether community violence exposure mediates the association between racialized economic segregation and youth firearm carriage. We analyzed data among 599 youths who sought emergency care and reported drug use within the pas

Childhood victimization and young adult firearm violence and self-harm ideation.

BACKGROUND: The consequences of childhood adversity impact broader society. Understanding the linkage between patterns of childhood victimization, specifically, and risks associated with young adult firearm violence is critical to public discourse regarding relative investments in child safety. METHODS: In a nationally representative sample of U.S. young adults (n = 4121), we conducted latent class analyses to model patterns of childhood victimization. We then estimated how the latent classes of childhood victimization patterns are related to adulthood firearm violence perpetration (inclusive

A Qualitative Scoping Review of Community Firearm Violence in Low-Income Settings.

Firearm violence is a public health crisis in the United States that disproportionately impacts community members in low-income areas who witness and experience violence and violent victimization at elevated rates compared to other socioeconomic groups, often as result of community disinvestment and systemic racism (Smith et al., Soc Sci Med 246:112587, 2020). While quantitative reviews of firearm violence and related factors exist, a review of qualitative methods and findings regarding exposure to firearm violence has not yet been conducted. This scoping review sought to address a gap in the

Ballistic lobar trajectory outcomes in civilian firearm penetrating brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Penetrating brain injury (PBI) is the most lethal of all firearm injuries, with reported survival rates of less than 20%. The projectile trajectory (PT) has been shown to impact mortality, but the significant lobar tracks have not been defined. The aim of this retrospective case-control study was to test for associations between distinct ballistic trajectories, missile types, and patient outcomes. METHODS: A total of 243 patients who presented with a PBI to the Saint Louis University emergency department from 2008 through 2019 were identified from the hospital registry. Conventiona
