Calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium: how much is too much for infant formulas?

Despite the use of metabolic balance studies and measurements of bone mineral content, it is difficult to assess the requirements of Ca and P in growing infants. From observations made forty years ago with cow's milk formulas it is obvious what is too much calcium and phosphorus in infant formulas. These observations were utilized in the development of "humanized cow's milk formulas" in the 1950s. Though the total concentrations of Ca and P have been greatly reduced in these formulas, the Ca/P ratio imbalance, compared to human milk, persists. Infants fed these formulas still receive a relativ

Evaluation of the patient with suspected eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease.

This article focuses on the evaluation and management of eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases other than eosinophilic esophagitis. Those diseases include eosinophilic gastritis, gastroenteritis, enteritis, and colitis. The diagnosis of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease is primarily dependent on the clinical history and histopathology of multiple biopsy specimens after ruling out other causes of intestinal eosinophilia. The diagnosis of eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases other than eosinophilic esophagitis is complicated by the lack of uniformly accepted diagnostic criteria. Treatment

[Food intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome of childhood: clinical efficacy of oral sodium cromoglycate and elimination diet].

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is recognized to be a common cause of chronic diarrhea without failure to thrive in childhood. Several studies stressed the role of food intolerance as a major factor in the pathogenesis of IBS. The aim of this multicenter study was to investigate the offending role of food in IBS and to compare the therapeutic role of oral sodium cromoglycate versus elimination diet. 153 patients (mean age 4 years) with diarrhea (> 3 stools per day for four days in a week) and abdominal pain for about 10 months were enrolled in this trial. About half of the patients had a family

Randomised trial of nutrition for preterm infants after discharge.

In a randomised double blind trial, the effect on growth and clinical status of a nutrient enriched 'post-discharge' milk formula versus a standard term formula, was compared in 32 exclusively bottle fed preterm infants. The formulas were used as the sole milk intake up to a postnatal age of 9 months. Significant increases in linear growth and weight gain were observed in the infants who received the enriched diet. There were no differences in vomiting, posseting, or bowel habit between the groups. Formula volumes ingested were similar between diet groups, indicating that the difference in for

Chemically defined diet in the treatment of kwashiorkor.

Kwashkorkor is associated with malabsorption of energy and nutrients. Standard diets often initiate diarrhea and a high mortality is still prevalent. A synthetic monomolecular formula has been evaluated and compared with a standard diet in the early rehabilitation phase of 21 children with kwashiorkor. The formula group had significantly less vomiting and reached minimum weight faster than the group on standard diet. Weight gain and diarrhea were similar. The rise of albumin and BUN was faster on standard diet. A significant increase in haemoglobin was seen only in the formula group. A rise in

Nutritional hypophosphatemic rickets secondary to Neocate® use.

Elemental formula is commonly used in children with feeding intolerance. We describe two, medically complex and feeding tube dependent, patients exclusively fed with Neocate® who subsequently developed hypophosphatemic rickets. Both patients had gross motor decline and pain with physical touch. They were found to have low serum phosphorus, normal calcium, and vitamin D studies, with elevated alkaline phosphatase suggestive of nutritional hypophosphatemia. Both courses were complicated by hypocalcemia following formula change and phosphorus supplementation, highlighting the need for careful man

Determination of Myo-Inositol in Infant, Pediatric, and Adult Formulas by Liquid Chromatography-Pulsed Amperometric Detection with Column Switching: Collaborative Study, Final Action 2011.18.

AOAC First Action Method 2011.18, Myo-Inositol (Free and Bound as Phosphatidylinositol) in Infant and Pediatric Formulas and Adult Nutritionals, was collaboratively studied. With this method free myo-inositol and phosphatidylinositol bound myo-inositol are extracted using two different sample preparation procedures, separated by ion chromatography using a combination of Dionex Carbo Pac PA1 and MA1 columns with column switching, and detected with pulsed amperometry using a gold electrode. Free myo-inositol is extracted from samples with dilute hydrochloric acid and water. Phosphatidylinositol

Induction of ovarian growth in Aegla platensis (Crustacea, Aeglidae) by means of neuroregulators incorporated to food.

The freshwater crab Aegla platensis was used as a model to induce ovarian growth by adding different neuroregulators to a pellet food formulation. Added compounds were the dopaminergic inhibitor spiperone or the enkephalinergic inhibitor naloxone, both of them at a dose of 10(-8) mol/animal. Animals were fed on the enriched pellets twice a week. After 7 wk, the gonadosomatic index (GI) was calculated as (gonad fresh weight/body fresh weight) x 100. GI significantly increased only for those females fed on spiperone pellets, compared to a control group receiving pellets with no compound added. D

An elemental diet for bowel obstruction in pregnancy: a case study.

Bowel obstruction is a recognised complication in pregnancy, especially in those with adhesions from previous surgery. We report a case where the use of an elemental diet was successful in avoiding surgery in a pregnant patient with recurrent conservatively managed small bowel obstruction.

Survey of advertising for nutritional supplements in health and bodybuilding magazines.

The use of food supplements by the general public is poorly quantified, and little information on this subject is available in the medical literature. We surveyed 12 recent issues of popular health and bodybuilding magazines (1) to quantify the number of advertisements for food supplements, the number of products advertised, and the number and type of ingredients in these products; (2) to identify the purported health benefits of these products; and (3) as a preliminary effort to identify areas for future research. We counted 89 brands, 311 products, and 235 unique ingredients, the most freque

Colonic impaction in guinea pigs fed a chemically defined diet: a case report.

Pathogen-free female Hartley guinea pigs were divided into four diet groups to determine optimal nitrogen requirements for growth, pregnancy and lactation. Three chemically defined test diets varying in total nitrogen were compared with commercial guinea pig feed. Within 13 days, 24 of 78 animals from the three test diet groups died or required euthanasia. Affected guinea pigs were depressed, lost weight and had distended abdomens. Distension, impaction and, in most cases, rupture of the spiral of the ascending colon and subsequent peritonitis were observed at necropsy. Husbandry changes which

Decreased lung metastasis and tumor growth in parenterally fed mice.

The influence of alternate forms of nutritional support on primary tumor growth rate, tumor DNA synthesis rate, and number of lung metastases was examined in Swiss mice bearing subcutaneously implanted Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC). From Day 14 through 22 postimplant, mice were fed by continuous intravenous infusion of dextrose/amino acid (TPN), were offered the same solution from a feeding bottle (PO), were offered a casein-based, solid diet (CASEIN), or were infused with an electrolyte (ELECT) solution while energy and nitrogen were provided from the casein diet. Tumor weight and doubling time

Enteral Nutrition in Pediatric Crohn's Disease: New Perspectives.

Background/Objectives: The efficacy of exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) on the induction of remission of Crohn's disease (CD) has been demonstrated with different diets (elemental, semi-elemental, and polymeric). A narrative review was conducted to assess the effects of different enteral diets in pediatric CD patients, considering the hypothesis that manipulating the nutritional key ingredients may enhance the clinical efficacy. Methods: An extensive literature search was performed across PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library, covering all records published up to 27 July 2025. Both pediatr

Evolution of nutritional management of acute malnutrition.

Wasting, kwashiorkor and stunting are not usually due to either protein or energy deficiency. Treatment based upon this concept results in high mortality rates, and failure of treated children to return physiologically to normal. They become relatively obese with insufficient lean tissue. Preventive strategies have also failed. Wasting and stunting are primarily due to deficiency of type II nutrients and kwashiorkor probably due to deficiency of several type I nutrients that confer resistance to oxidative stress. Modern dietary treatments are based upon the F75 formula whilst the child is sick

Acute duodenal Crohn's disease successfully managed with low-speed elemental diet infusion via nasogastric tube: a case report.

Duodenal Crohn's disease is rare, and patients without obstruction are treated medically. We herein report one case whose duodenal Crohn's disease was successfully managed with low-speed elemental diet infusion through a nasogastric tube. A 28-year-old female developed acute duodenal Crohn's disease. Upper GI radiologic and endoscopic examinations showed a stricture in the duodenal bulb. Using the duodenal biopsy specimens, mucosal cytokine levels were measured; interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels were remarkably elevated. For initial 2 wk, powdered mesal

Are there any real differences between enteral feed formulations used in the critically ill?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We know that adequate nutritional support is essential in the treatment of critically ill patients, because it can, if applied appropriately, improve the clinical outcome. Increasing evidence seems to suggest that malnutrition itself is a predictor of poor outcome in intensive care, and significant underfeeding during intensive care stay increases the risk of bloodstream infections. The purpose of this review is to highlight recent advances in enteral nutrition in the critically ill adult patient. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies suggest that tight glycaemic control is assoc

[Development of a milk beverage based on pumpkin flakes].

Vitamin A deficiency is one of the majors public health problems in Brazilian Northeast, and among other causes may be concerned to precocious weaning. Aiming at reducing this problem, a dehydrated product based on powdered milk and pumpkin flakes was developed to act as a carotene source at weaning period. Pumpkin flakes were obtained by drum drying at a 6 atm steam pressure, 0.75 m2 contact surface and 1 rpm, and had their content of carotenoids, beta carotene, centesimal composition molds and yeast and faecal coliforms evaluated. The flakes were added to sugar and whole powdered milk accord
