Food Insecurity in the Food Allergic Population: A Work Group Report of the AAAAI Adverse Reactions to Foods Committee.

Food allergies affect 32 million Americans. Restricted diets due to food allergies can be difficult to maintain especially when the household is food insecure. Food insecurity is defined as the inability to acquire food for household members due to insufficient money or resources for food. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many people to face food insecurity for the first time with Latinx, Native American, and Black communities disproportionately affected. Because of the increase in food insecurity, this work group developed a survey regarding food insecurity screening. This survey was sent out

Associations between Household- and Child-Referenced Food Security Status and Dietary Intake among Low-Income Urban Black Children.

We examined whether dietary intake differs across household and child food security (FS) status, and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation among Black children (ages 9-15) in a low-income urban setting. This cross-sectional survey used the USDA 18-item Household Food Security Survey, that includes the 8-item Child Module, and a validated FFQ to assess children's diet (n=451). Nutrient intake differed across child FS status, but not household FS. SNAP participation was associated with better micronutrient intake (vitamin D and calcium) among food secure children. Assess

Criminal justice system involvement and food insufficiency: findings from the 2018 New York City Community Health Survey.

PURPOSE: To assess whether personal and family history of criminal justice (CRJ) involvement is related to food insufficiency. "No reason for children to go hungry": Rural U.S. caregivers' perceptions of elected officials and their impacts on food policy.

In the context of the increasingly polarized U.S. political environments of the 2016 and 2020 elections, how did rural caregivers think about food and health policies? To answer this question, researchers interviewed 50 low-income women living in two rural N.C. counties in 2016/7 and 2020 as part of a broader longitudinal qualitative study of family food environments. As participants reflected on elections and food assistance policies, caregivers focused on their experiences as mothers and described current or potential policies and programs in light of how they would impact their children. Ca…

Familial auriculotemporal nerve (Frey) syndrome.

Auriculotemporal nerve (Frey) syndrome in children is rare, and may be misdiagnosed as food allergy. Trauma to the auriculotemporal nerve during forceps-assisted delivery has been implicated in about half of the reported childhood Frey syndrome cases and most patients present with unilateral involvement. We describe two Caucasian sisters with bilateral Frey syndrome, neither of whom was delivered with forceps assistance, and highlight its distinction from food allergy. Frey syndrome may occur in a familial pattern, and in the absence of a history of perinatal trauma.

Oral food challenges in children: review and future perspectives.

Food allergy is a lifelong condition with no known treatment or cure. Allergy tests such as skin tests and blood tests are not always accurate when positive and are not necessarily diagnostic of a food allergy. A food allergy takes into consideration both the history of exposure and the testing. The food challenge is considered the diagnostic gold standard for food allergy. However, recent evidence suggests that not enough challenges are being performed. Several techniques exist with which clinicians can challenge patients. Providers who perform challenges should be familiar with assessing sig

Health and support service utilization patterns of American Indians and Alaska Natives diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

The purpose of this analysis is twofold: to examine the types of health and support services provided by CARE Act funded providers to American Indians/Alaska Natives and to compare the characteristics and service utilization patterns for this group with those of individuals from other racial/ethnic groups. We present an analysis of the demographic characteristics, service utilization, and health outcomes of all HIV-infected clients who received services in five geographic areas at agencies that were funded through the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act. North Carolina's FarmsSHARE: Farmers, Food Hubs, And Community-Based Organizations Sustain Healthy Food Programs.

The North Carolina FarmsSHARE program distributes healthy, locally sourced food to low-income households across nearly 100 counties in the state through the Department of Agriculture's Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement. In this article, we present insights from a cross-sectional survey of stakeholders who were involved in implementing the program. We explore measures of satisfaction, perceived value, economic impact, quality of food, and community relationships within each stakeholder group (farmers, food hubs, and community-based organizations). We also discuss FarmsSHARE's

Beyond the charitable feeding system: non-traditional community-based access points to distribute healthy food in an urban-rural county in the United States.

High levels of food insecurity have motivated some local jurisdictions to expand access to food outside of the charitable feeding system in … ed with meeting national recommendations for fruit and vegetable consumption. Enrollment in federal food assistance programs showed similar associations. Distributing healthy food through non-traditional access points appeared to be a promising practice.

Food-based interventions to mitigate household food insecurity in Canada: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Household food insecurity (HFI) is a persistent and important public health and policy concern within Canada that continues to be widespread in the face of economic uncertainties and inflation. The objective of this systematic review was to synthesize the evidence on food-based interventions that could reduce HFI in Canada. METHODS: Studies that assessed a food-based intervention that might reduce food insecurity and measured HFI were included, regardless of whether that was the primary purpose of the study. Four databases were searched up to 19 February 2025. Screening of abstr

Promising Practices to Promote Snap at Schools: A Quantitative Analysis of Snap Outreach Efforts.

BACKGROUND: In 2023, 17.9% of US households with children experienced food insecurity. While the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) aims to reduce food insecurity, persistent under-enrollment, labeled the "SNAP Gap," limits its impact. Schools represent a strategic yet underutilized setting to reach eligible families. This study examined school-based strategies to increase caregivers' awareness and knowledge of SNAP. METHODS: Twelve diverse school districts implemented stigma-free SNAP outreach initiatives, reaching 8601 participants across 37 outreach events statewide. Caregive
