Examining the role of olfaction in dietary choice.

Obesity is frequently caused by calorie-rich dietary choices across the animal kingdom. As prandial preference toward a high-fat diet develops in mice, an anti-preference or devaluation of a nutritionally balanced but less palatable standard chow diet occurs concomitantly. Although mechanistic insights underlying devaluation have been observed physiologically in the brain, it is unclear how peripheral sensory processing affects food choice. Because olfactory cues and odor perception help coordinate food preference and intake, we determine the role of smell in the targeted consumption of a high

Acquired aversions as the basis for varied diets of ruminants foraging on rangelands.

Ruminants eat an array of plant species that vary in nutrients and toxins. This selection makes intuitive sense, but no theories adequately explain this diversity. Some maintain it reduces the likelihood of overingesting toxins, whereas others contend it meets nutritional needs. Nevertheless, herbivores seek variety even when toxins are not a concern and nutritional needs are met. I offer another explanation for this behavior, one which encompasses the avoidance of toxins and the acquisition of nutrients. A key concept in this theory is aversion, the decrease in preference for food just eaten

Cyanogenesis in animal-plant interactions.

When there is variation between individuals of the same plant species for a putative defensive chemical it is possible to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the chemical does indeed have a defence function for the plant. The polymorphism for cyanogenesis in Lotus corniculatus and Trifolium repens provides ample evidence that cyanogenesis has an important role in plant defence. This herbivore-plant interaction is, however, far from simple: the degree of selectivity varies between individuals of the same animal species and is influenced by differences in hunger and the type of food previously co

The association of cigarette smoking with appetite, appetite-related hormones and food reward: a matched-pair cohort study.

This study examined associations of cigarette smoking with appetite perceptions, appetite-related hormones, food preferences and eating traits. In a cross-sectional matched-pair cohort design, 25 participants who smoke cigarettes and 25 who do not were matched 1:1 by age, sex, ethnicity, and BMI. Across two visits, participants' food preferences (Leeds Food Preference Questionnaire), cravings (Control of Eating Questionnaire), and eating traits (Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire) were assessed. Fasting and postprandial appetite perceptions (visual analogue scales) were also assessed during a 4…

The effect of different intensities of treadmill exercise on food reward in young men.

Acute land-based high-intensity exercise has been shown to alter food reward. However, it remains unclear regarding the acute effect of different exercise intensities on food reward. Therefore, we examined the response of food reward to high- and low-intensity treadmill exercise in healthy young men. Twelve healthy young men (aged 22.8 ± 2.0 years, mean ± standard deviation) completed three, half-day laboratory-based trials (i.e., high-intensity exercise, low-intensity exercise and control), in a random order. In the exercise trials, the participants performed a 60-min exercise (from 09:30 to

The Impact of Negative Social Feedback on Wanting and Liking of Food Pictures in Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Negative emotional states have been found to predict food cravings and consumption in the general population. People with a persistent tendency to restrict food intake, however, might be eating less when sad, angry, or stressed. In this study, the impact of inducing a negative emotional state through social exclusion on wanting and liking of food pictures was explored in patients with anorexia nervosa. METHOD: 43 patients with anorexia nervosa and 22 healthy controls completed a computerised social rejection and food appraisal task. Participants viewed short videos in which a stran

Multidimensional Grocery-Store Preferences of Low-Income Caregivers of Toddlers.

BACKGROUND: Many United States toddlers do not meet recommended fruit and vegetable intakes, and intakes are lower in low-income households. Where caregivers shop shapes what they buy, yet studies of store choice have generally examined price and proximity alone, leaving other features of the retail environment largely unexamined. OBJECTIVES: We examined how household characteristics influence grocery-store preferences among caregivers of toddlers from low-income households in Texas. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in which caregivers of toddlers aged 12 to 47 mo from low-inco

The power of taste: A scoping review about how taste experiences shapes dietary habits and health from pregnancy to adolescence.

Taste influences food preferences and consumption, potentially contributing to dietary choices across the lifespan. Hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as biological and cognitive development during childhood and adolescence, may alter taste perception, sensitivity, and preferences, with possible implications for diet and health. This scoping review aimed to map evidence on how taste experiences vary across critical life stages (pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood, and adolescence) and how these changes affect dietary behaviours, food choices, and health outcomes. A co…

Feeding frozen complementary foods promotes food acceptance in infants: The randomized intervention trial Baby Gourmet.

Infancy may represent a sensitive window for establishing food preferences that could affect the individual's long-term potential to establish healthy eating patterns. Our study was based on the hypothesis that preserving the natural flavor of the ingredients of commercially prepared complementary foods would increase the acceptance of new foods, especially vegetables. Frozen vegetable-based meals for infants were developed to preserve the natural taste of the ingredients better than sterilization of meals in jars. In a 3-month randomized, controlled intervention study, 51 infants were fed eit…

Assessment of local wood species used for the manufacture of cookware and the perception of chemical benefits and chemical hazards associated with their use in Kumasi, Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Historical proven wood species have no reported adverse health effect associated with its past use. Different historical proven species have traditionally been used to manufacture different wooden food contact items. This study uses survey questionnaires to assess suppliers', manufacturers', retailers' and consumers' (end-users') preferences for specific wood species, to examine the considerations that inform these preferences and to investigate the extent of awareness of the chemical benefits and chemical hazards associated with wooden food contact material use. METHODS: Through

No significant salt or sweet taste preference or sensitivity differences following ad libitum consumption of ultra-processed and unprocessed diets: a randomized controlled pilot study.

Ultra-processed food consumption has increased worldwide, yet little is known about the potential links with taste preference and sensitivity. This exploratory study aimed to (i) compare sweet and salty taste detection thresholds and preferences following consumption of ultra-processed and unprocessed diets, (ii) investigate whether sweet and salty taste sensitivity and preference were associated with taste substrates (i.e. sodium and sugar) and ad libitum nutrient intake, and (iii) examine associations of taste detection thresholds and preferences with blood pressure (BP) and anthropometric m

Food-based strategies to mitigate protein-energy undernutrition in later life.

Ensuring adequate food intake among older people is essential for maintaining health and preventing malnutrition. This review explores strategies to enhance dietary intake in this population group. Several key interventions are highlighted, including offering high-energy and protein-fortified meals and snacks, optimising the visual appeal and presentation of foods, enhancing flavours, and providing finger foods or modified textures to support consumption. Familiarity with fortified foods may encourage acceptance and increase intake, while improving food aesthetics and incorporating varied flav
