The aim of this study was to establish guidelines for US assessment of the talo-crural, the talo-navicular and the calcaneo-cuboid joints during the first year of life, which could serve as a reference while studying foot deformities. The feet of 54 healthy children were examined at birth and at the age of 4, 7 and 12 months by using three easily defined and reproducible US projections. With a medial projection the relation of the navicular in relation to the medial malleolus and the head of the talus was studied. A lateral projection revealed the calcaneo-cuboid relationship and a dorsal proj…

Background: Classifications of AAFD/PCFD have evolved with an increased understanding of the pathology involved. A review of classification systems helps identify deficiencies and respective contributions to the evolution in understanding the classification of AAFD/PCFD. Methods: Using multiple electronic database searches (Medline, PubMed) and Google search, original papers classifying AAFD/PCFD were identified. Nine original papers were identified that met the inclusion criteria. Results: Johnson's original classification and multiple variants provided a significant leap in understanding and

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown a wide range of anatomical classifications of the subtalar joint (STJ) in the population and this is related to the different force line structures of the foot. Different subtalar articular surface morphology may affect the occurrence and development of flat foot deformity, and there are fewer studies in this area. The main objective of our study was to determine the association of different subtalar articular surface with the occurrence and severity of flat foot deformity.
METHODS: We analyzed the imaging data of 289 cases of STJ. The articular surface

The Ponseti method has shown to be effective in treating idiopathic clubfoot deformity. Application of a foot abduction brace is crucial to long term outcome. Compliance and possible effect on femoral anteversion and tibial torsion were assessed in 20 children with an average bracing period of 33 months. Nineteen patients were compliant with the bracing protocol and highly satisfied with the treatment protocol. Ultrasound measurement of femoral anteversion (40.5 degrees) and tibial external torsion (38.4 degrees) of the affected side were within the normal range. Range of motion of the ankle j

Congenital deformities of the foot significantly challenge the mobility and quality of life of affected individuals. While surgical interventions are common, rehabilitation protocols tailored to address the specific needs of adults with congenital foot deformities are less explored. This case series aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a specialized foot rehabilitation protocol in improving functional outcomes and quality of life in adults with congenital foot deformities. A series of cases involving adults diagnosed with congenital foot deformities were enrolled in a structured rehabilitatio…

OBJECTIVES: To identify characteristics of foot pressure distribution in different foot deformities using a computerized insole sensor system, and to identify changes in these parameters after corrective surgery in children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP).
DESIGN: Before-after trial.
SETTING: University hospital.
PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-seven limbs of 44 children with spastic CP were assessed (35 equinus, 17 equinovarus, 15 equinovalgus).
INTERVENTION: Orthopedic surgery for foot deformities.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Parameters of foot contact pattern, pressure-time integral (PTI), and center …

Currently available methods for analysis and planning of post-traumatic or congenital deformity correction of the foot have some limitations. The aim of this retrospective study was to establish reference lines and angles (RLAs), and the resulting ratios, based on reproducible anatomic points on sagittal feet radiographs. The key starting point of our evaluation was the previously undescribed length and position of the talus joint line (TJL), from the border of the articular surface of the talus and the posterior process of talus. First, we calculated the relationships between the TJL and the

The coexisting of three deformities as hallux valgus, flatfoot, and the calcaneal spur is an undefined medical condition, and it may be called triad of foot deformities (TFD) as a definition for a new disease entity. A customized 3D insole prototype was created by postprocessing of MRI data, and printed by 3D printer technology for the purpose of providing effective and innovative treatment for TFD. A 42 years-old female was clinically examined for TFD findings. All radiological measurements were made on the weightbearing anteroposterior and lateral X-rays. The patient underwent the pedogram (…

INTRODUCTION: Subjects with Down syndrome (DS) are known to be affected by various foot deformities. Despite the fact that some of these deformities have been reported in the literature, a more comprehensive description would be of benefit. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of known foot deformities in patients with DS and of other previously non-described foot anomalies in this population.
HYPOTHESIS: Subjects with DS have an increased prevalence of foot deformities compared to control subjects.
METHODS: Fifty-five subjects with DS (age: 14.6±7.4 years) had undergone po…

Severe contraction deformities of the foot, e.g. after trauma or spasticity, often lead to an inability to walk and can, in part, only be rectified by corrective bone osteotomy of the hind and middle foot. In this article, we discuss hind and middle foot osteotomies in cases of severe foot deformities in adolescents and adults. The surgical techniques of Lambrinudi, Imhäuser and Lelièvre will be considered. The surgical technique of Lambrinudi uses a triple arthrodesis between the talus, calcaneus and navicular bones, and the cuboid bone, in addition to the removal of a bone wedge from the tal…

In a prospective study of 2,401 newborns, the incidence of foot deformities was 4%, of which three fourths were various forms of adductus anomalies. At age 16 years, the children with a foot deformity and a random sample of those with normal feet as newborns were examined by dynamic foot pressure (EMED) and gait analysis (Vifor). The natural course of all congenital foot deformities, except clubfoot, was favorable. The importance of monitoring the children during the entire growth period is shown by the fact that at age 6 years, 87%, and at 16 years, 95% of the adductus deformities had resolve…

Sixty-three patients with rigid equinovarus contractures of the foot following ischemic episodes in the lower leg were treated at our institute from 1983 to 1994 by lengthening the Achilles tendon and the tendon of the m.tibialis posterior, release of the tendons of the m.flexor digitorum longus and the m.flexor hallucis longus and release of the dorsal capsule of the ankle joint. Patients with an equinus deformity greater than 20 degrees, with an additional hind foot varus deformity of more than 5 degrees and/or malrotation of the midfoot were not eligible for this procedure. The initial equi

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to compare the prevalence and severity of foot deformities and the development of ulcerations in patients after a great toe amputations.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We evaluated the presence of deformities of the toes and metatarsophalangeal joints (MTPJs) in patients with a great toe amputation who had an intact unamputated contralateral foot. The contralateral foot served as the patient's own control. We used a binomial test for paired data to compare the presence of deformity and ulcer formation and Fisher's exact test to compare joint flexibility in toes and MTPJs …

A retrospective clinical and radiologic study was made of 16 children with foot deformities and associated occult spinal abnormalities in a 3-year period. Eleven children had bilateral foot deformities; the deformities were unilateral in five. Midline cutaneous lesions of the back were noted in 13 children; the most common dermal sign was a hairy patch. All children had radiologic features of spinal dysraphism on combined computed tomography (CT) scan and myelogram. Spinal dysraphism was not considered in the initial assessment of four children. Children with foot deformity should therefore ha…
