A sixteen-year-old boy suffered from sharp pain in the knee during a jump while playing basketball. He had a positive history of Osgood Schlatter disease. Radiographic evaluation demonstrated an avulsion fracture of the tibial tuberosity Type III according to the classification of Watson-Jones. Rehabilitation after avulsion fracture of the tibial tuberosity is an important consideration for this relatively uncommon adolescent injury. In such avulsion fractures, landing on the ground with the knee fully extended after a jump is the most likely cause. This case report reviews the rehabilitation

Avulsion fracture of the tibial insertion of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is a rare condition. Until recently, bony avulsion fractures of the PCL have been repaired with open reduction and internal fixation. Posterior approach commonly used for open repair is rather extensive, yet it does not allow for detection and management of associated intraarticular injuries of the knee. We report a case of avulsion fracture of the tibial attachment of the PCL managed by arthroscopic reduction and fixation. A large bony fragment that extended into the posterior part of the lateral tibial plateau

Traumatic hip dislocation in children is a rare condition. Immediate closed reduction is a treatment of choice, but when incongruent reduction results, it can be due to interposition and requires open arthrotomy. We present a previously unreported technique of arthroscopic treatment that was used successfully for traumatic hip dislocation in a 10-year-old girl with impingement of the avulsed ligamentum teres. Arthroscopy was effective in confirming the exact nature of the interposition material and excising the fragment with minimal invasion.

An avulsion fracture of the insertion of the extensor carpi radialis longus tendon is rare. There have been only five reports of this injury in the literature [1, 2, 4]. We describe an additional case in which open reduction with internal fixation gave a satisfactory result.

Fractures of the base of the second metacarpal are infrequent events compared with those of the first or fifth metacarpal. Furthermore, these fractures are often difficult to visualize on standard radiographs. There is controversy regarding the management of such fractures. Two case reports and a discussion of this entity are presented.

Phalangeal dislocations of toes are extremely rare in childhood and usually can be treated by closed reduction. We present a proximal interphalangeal dislocation of the fourth toe with an irreducible avulsion fracture of the middle phalanx requiring open reduction. To our knowledge concomitant avulsion fractures in this condition have not been reported thus far in pediatric patients. The pathological mechanism of this injury is discussed, and the significance of the plantar plate for joint stability is emphasized.

A technique is presented for repair of grade III avulsion fractures of the ulnar collateral ligament when the bony avulsion fragment in the thumb is too small or too comminuted to allow simple repair. The case presented demonstrates that a single suture-to-bone anchor can provide secure ligament fixation without the need for external pull-out wires or buttons and can make possible an early return to activity.

The rarity of triceps tendon avulsion is called into question by our series of 6 cases collected over a 5-year period in a small, isolated Israeli community. The even rarer occurrence of triceps avulsion accompanying fractures of the radial head is more obviously contradicted by the 3 or 4 instances of such combined injuries in our series. Awareness that a fall on the outstretched arm, with or without fracture of the radial head, is sufficient cause of the triceps avulsion or tear ought to increase the frequency of the diagnosis. Just as fractures of the proximal ulna oblige the clinician to l

Tibial spine avulsion fractures (TSAFs) are an uncommon cause of knee pain in children and adolescents and are exceedingly rare in adults. In skeletally mature individuals, these injuries typically result from high-energy trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents, and are often associated with concomitant knee injuries. We present the case of an adult female who sustained a TSAF after a fall while skateboarding. Given the nature of the injury, the risks and benefits of nonoperative versus operative management were discussed, and the patient elected to undergo surgery. Arthroscopic fixation of th

Avulsion fractures of the pelvis and hip region are typical injuries in adolescent athletes. Avulsion sites include the muscle tendon origin or insertion, and treating these injuries surgically or conservatively remains a debated issue. The main goals of this review were to assess and summarize injury types and sites, treatment-related clinical outcomes, and return to sport for adolescent patients with a pelvis avulsion fracture and to provide support for making treatment decisions. The PubMed database was searched in November 2021 to identify all published articles from 2000 to 2021 that repo

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the manifestation, mechanisms, and treatment of isolated partial femoral avulsion fractures of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in adults.
METHODS: From January 2011 to December 2018, we retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of three patients with isolated partial femoral avulsion fractures of the PCL who were admitted to our institution. All of these patients were admitted to our emergency department within 24 h after injury. After physical examination and radiographs were taken and reviewed, all patients were admitted and underwent surgical treatment. In

RATIONALE: Ischial tuberosity avulsion fracture (ITAF) is a very rare sports injury, and there is currently no consensus on its diagnosis and treatment. Although conservative treatment is adequate for most patients, those with large displacement of the fracture need surgical management.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 13-year-old male athlete experienced tearing pain in the right hip during a sprint. Radiographic examination showed an avulsion fracture of the right ischial tuberosity.
DIAGNOSIS: Right ITAF.
INTERVENTIONS: On the 3rd day of injury, the patient was treated with open reduction and interna

Although a tibial eminence avulsion fracture is a rare knee injury, it can result in some complications such as nonunion, limited range of motion, and anterior instability of the knee if the displaced fracture is not well reduced. Arthroscopic procedures for this fracture have been commonly performed in recent years. In patients with small fragments, a pullout operation is usually performed, but arthroscopic suture reduction is technically difficult. In addition, anterior instability of the knee may remain even if the fragment is well reduced at the time of the surgical procedure. Generally, s

Minor injuries of the anterior process of the calcaneus occur frequently and most heal uneventfully. The present series reports on 6 patients with persistent complaints after anterior process avulsion fractures. The avulsed fragments of the anterior process at the calcaneocuboid joint were surgically excised in all, which resolved the complaints completely in 4 patients and reduced the complaints significantly in 2. If conservative measures fail and the complaints are refractory, debridement of the anterior process avulsion fractures at the calcaneocuboid joint could be a viable option.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of Norwegian dentists on avulsion and root fracture injuries.
METHOD: An electronic questionnaire (QuestBack) was sent in 2012 to all dentists (n = 255) employed in the Public Dental Service (PDS) in three counties of Norway. The dentists were asked to state whether they felt they had sufficient competence to treat avulsion and root fractures immediately and long term. Based on international guidelines, the authors achieved a consensus for ideal treatment. Based on two cases, the clinicians were to assess their own competence. They

Fractures of the transverse processes in the lumbar vertebrae occur as the result of major forces such as direct blunt trauma, violent lateral flexion-extension forces, avulsion of the psoas muscle, or Malgaigne fractures of the pelvis. Dancers make repeated and forceful hyperextension and flexions of the spine, which may cause fractures of the transverse processes of the lumbar vertebrae. Repeated trauma of muscles in dancers may cause avulsion fractures and myositis ossificans. Herein, we report MRI and CT findings of an avulsion from the right transverse process of the L2 and L3 vertebrae i

Avulsion fractures of the pelvic apophyses rarely occur in adolescent athletes in the course of sudden strong contraction of muscle attached to growth cartilage. This injury may usually be misdiagnosed for tendon or muscle strain. Patient's history, physical examination, and radiologic studies are important for diagnosis. The literature includes only a few case reports but no case series as yet. The aim of this study was to present the results of 5 cases of anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS) avulsion fractures treated conservatively. The study included 5 patients (4 male, 1 female, mean age

BACKGROUND: Avulsion fracture of the iliac crest apophysis is a rare condition that commonly occurs in adolescent athletes. Conservative treatment for this injury can produce excellent functional outcomes. However, the rehabilitation process requires a rather long immobilisation period. This study aimed to evaluate the use of cannulated screws for fixation of avulsion fractures of iliac crest apophysis.
METHODS: Ten patients with avulsion fractures of iliac crest apophysis were treated by open reduction and internal fixation using cannulated screws.
RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 14.6

INTRODUCTION: In the treatment of avulsion fractures of the posterior calcaneal tuberosity, open reduction and internal fixation are prone to several complications. We describe a new treatment using an Ilizarov external fixator, which can minimise the complications and achieve sufficient stability of the displaced fragment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old woman sustained an avulsion fracture of the calcaneus. Examination revealed the development of bruising with extremely taut skin over the posterior prominence of the displaced bone. Radiographs demonstrated grossly proximal displacement of
