Encephalomalacia is the softening or loss of brain tissue after cerebral infarction, cerebral ischemia, infection, craniocerebral trauma, or other injury. The term is usually used during gross pathologic inspection to describe blurred cortical margins and decreased consistency of brain tissue after infarction. Multicystic encephalomalacia refers to the formation of multiple cystic cavities of various sizes in the cerebral cortex of neonates and infants after injury, most notably perinatal hypoxic-ischemic events. Chronic sinusitis has become one of the most common diseases in otolaryngology pr

BACKGROUND: In order to characterize frontal lobe features and their behavioural and cognitive correlates across diagnostic categories, we performed a cross-sectional analysis of behavioural and neuropsychological data from a large, prospective Belgian study on behavioural and psychological signs and symptoms of dementia (BPSD).
METHOD: Patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) (n=170), frontotemporal dementia (FTD) (n=28), mixed dementia (MXD) (n=29) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) (n=21) were included and underwent neuropsychological and behavioural assessment by means of a batter…

OBJECTIVES: (1) To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of agitation in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other forms of … It is related to dementia severity and to specific types of associated psychopathology implicating frontal lobe dysfunction. The present study is the largest and most comprehensive assessment of agitation reported. The data suggest that agitation in AD is a frontal lobe syndrome. Frontal lobe dysfunction may predispose AD patients to agitation by exaggerating …

A case history is presented in which acute periodic catatonia was caused by frontal lobe epilepsy. This manifestation of frontal lobe epilepsy has not, to the authors' knowledge, been described before. The authors mention the problems of diagnosis and discuss a possible pathogenetic mechanism for the capricious presentation in this patient.

The topographic distribution of brain atrophy was quantified by image analysis of fixed brain slices from ten patients dying with dementia of frontal type (DFT) and from six other patients dying with dementia of frontal type with motor neurone disease (DFT + MND). In both groups the atrophy was maximal within frontal, anterior temporal and anterior parietal regions of cortex, although other structures such as the amygdala, caudate nucleus, thalamus and hippocampus were also affected. The magnitude of the atrophy was much greater, in all affected regions, in DFT alone than in DFT + MND. Grey an

A new type of behaviour, termed 'utilization behaviour', was observed among patients affected with left or right unilateral, or bilateral, f … ependence from the outside world is disturbed. With frontal lesions, the inhibitory function of the frontal lobes on the parietal lobes is suppressed. The result is a release of the activities of the parietal lobes so that the subject becomes dependent on visual and tactile stimulation from the outside world. Five cases are reported as examples: one anatomocli …

Models of speech perception are centered around a hierarchy in which auditory representations in the thalamus propagate to primary auditory cortex, then to the lateral temporal cortex, and finally through dorsal and ventral pathways to sites in the frontal lobe. However, evidence for short latency speech responses and low-level spectrotemporal representations in frontal cortex raises the question of whether speech-evoked activity in frontal cortex strictly reflects downstream processing from lateral temporal cortex or whether there are direct parallel pathways from the thalamus or primary audi…

Brain tumors can elicit a range of mood … dering organic causes in atypical psychiatric presentations. Meningiomas, particularly those in the frontal lobes, can present primarily with psychiatric symptoms, complicating early diagnosis. Self- disgust is an adverse self-conscious emotion that plays an important role in psychopathology and well-being. However, self-disgust has received little attention in the emotion literature, therefore our understanding of the processes underlying the experience of self-disgust is relatively scarce, although neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies support the idea that this emotion may heavily rely on frontal lobe-related cognition. To test this hypothesis, in two studies we investigated the relationship between state and trait levels of self-disgust, cognition and emotion regulation in …

Although the behavioral effects of damage to the frontal lobes date back to at least the late 19th century even midway through the 20th century very little was known about human frontal lobe function and there was a general consensus that the frontal lobe did not play a key role in cognition. This all changed when Brenda Milner published a chapter in a 1964 volume entitled: The Frontal Granular Cortex and Behavior. Milner's chapter, "Some effects of frontal lobectomy in man," was the first systematic study of the effect of frontal lobe excisions on cognition in human patients. Milner had acces…

OBJECTIVE: The term Executive Functions (EFs) refers to the higher-level skills we use every day to control and coordinate our cognitive abilities and behaviours. EFs are mainly supported by the frontal lobes and its connections. EFs are frequently impaired in schizophrenia, but the profiles of executive deficits accompanying schizophrenia remains unclear. The use of specific EFs models might help to shed new light on this issue. Stuss (Stuss & Alexander, 2007; Stuss, 2008, 2011, 2017) proposed an integrative and operant model of EFs which has never been used to explore and characterize defici…

Acute delirium and other neuropsychiatric symptoms have frequently been reported in COVID-19 patients and are variably referred to as acute encephalopathy, COVID-19 encephalopathy, SARS-CoV-2 encephalitis, or steroid-responsive encephalitis. COVID-19 specific biomarkers of cognitive impairment are currently lacking, but there is some evidence that SARS-CoV-2 could preferentially and directly target the frontal lobes, as suggested by behavioral and dysexecutive symptoms, fronto-temporal hypoperfusion on MRI, EEG slowing in frontal regions, and frontal hypometabolism on 18F-FDG-PET imaging. We s…

Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) is an infrequent neoplasm that affects children less commonly than adults. In this case report, a four-year-old boy presented with focal seizures has diagnosed with this tumor in the frontal lobe. Complete surgical resection was achieved, and histopathological features of PXA grade II were observed. During follow-up, the patient showed improvement of the focal seizures. In spite of the pleomorphic features, the PXA had a favorable prognosis.
