Spoils division rules shape aggression between natural groups.

Violent intergroup conflicts cause widespread harm; yet, throughout human history, destructive hostilities occur time and time again1,2. Benefits that are obtainable by victorious parties include territorial expansion, deterrence and ascendency in between-group resource competition3-6. Many of these are non-excludable goods that are available to all group members, whereas participation entails substantial individual risks and costs. Thus, a collective action problem emerges, raising the question why individuals participate in such campaigns at all7-9. Distinguishing offensive and defensive int

Mirrored prominent deck B phenomenon: frequent small losses override infrequent large gains in the inverted Iowa Gambling Task.

Since Bechara et al. pioneered its development, the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) has been widely applied to elucidate decision behavior and medial prefrontal function. Although most decision makers can hunch the final benefits of IGT, ventromedial prefrontal lesions generate a myopic choice pattern. Additionally, the Iowa group developed a revised IGT (inverted IGT, iIGT) to confirm the IGT validity. Each iIGT trial was generated from the trial of IGT by multiplying by a "-" to create an inverted monetary value. Thus, bad decks A and B in the IGT become good decks iA and iB in the iIGT; additional

The use of messages in altering risky gambling behavior in college students: an experimental analogue study.

This study examined the effects of messages on altering risky gambling behavior in college students. While playing a chance-based computerized game with play money, three groups of participants either viewed occasional accurate messages that correctly described the contingencies of the game, neutral messages unrelated to the contingencies, or no messages. Participants in the accurate message condition spent overall less money gambling, played fewer trials in the final phase of the game when all trials resulted in losses, and were more likely to quit the game while they still had money remainin

Does eye-tracking have an effect on economic behavior?

Eye-tracking is becoming an increasingly popular tool for understanding the underlying behavior driving human decisions. However, an important unanswered methodological question is whether the use of an eye-tracking device itself induces changes in participants' behavior. We study this question using eight popular games in experimental economics chosen for their varying levels of theorized susceptibility to social desirability bias. We implement a simple between-subject design where participants are randomly assigned to either a control or an eye-tracking treatment. In seven of the eight games

Unconditional and exponentially large violation of classicality.

Testing the predictions of quantum mechanics has been one of the main experimental endeavors for decades. Recent advancements in technology have led to a number of demonstrations that test non-classicality via specific computational tasks. Limitations of these experiments include dependence on complexity theory assumptions, susceptibility to hardware noise, and inefficient verification, raising questions about their scalability. We propose to test non-classicality using a game based on complement sampling, an efficiently verifiable problem that achieves the largest possible separation between

Structural changes to electronic gaming machines as effective harm minimization strategies for non-problem and problem gamblers.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of three proposed modifications to the structural characteristics of electronic gaming machines as harm minimisation strategies for non-problem and probable problem gamblers. Structural changes included reducing the maximum bet size, reducing reel spin and removing large note acceptors. Behavioural patterns of play were observed in 779 participants attending clubs and hotels. Observations were conducted in the gaming venue during regular gaming sessions. Eight experimental machines were designed to represent every combination of the modifications.

"Polio Eradication" Game May Increase Public Interest in Global Health.

BACKGROUND: Interactive games that highlight global health challenges and solutions are a potential tool for increasing interest in global health. To test this hypothesis, we developed an interactive "Polio Eradication" (PE) game and evaluated whether playing or watching was associated with increased public interest in global health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PE game is a life-size, human board game that simulates PE efforts. Four players-a researcher, a transportation expert, a local community coordinator, and a healthcare worker-collaborate as an interdisciplinary team to help limit ongoin

Game played by tandem-running ants: Hint of procedural rationality.

Navigation during colony relocation by the tandem-running ants, Diacamma indicum, is a tour de force of biological traffic coordination, as this directly impact the survival and fitness of the whole colony. Even on one-lane paths, the ants tactfully manage a bidirectional flow: An informed individual (termed leader) guides one nest mate (termed follower) to a new optimal nest, and then returns to recruit additional followers (one follower at a time). We propose that encounters between the ants moving in opposite directions can be modeled within the framework of game theory, leading to an under

Identifying individuals in need of help for their uncontrolled gaming: A narrative review of concerns and comments regarding gaming disorder diagnostic criteria.

OBJECTIVE: In 2013, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) included the diagnostic criteria of Internet gaming disorder (IGD). Then, in 2019, the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) categorized gaming disorder (GD) as an addictive disorder. This review aimed to review the raised concerns, debate, and research of IGD or GD criteria and provide suggestions to resolve them. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted, and PubMed was searched for articles mentioning concerns and research on the DSM-5 criteria for IGD, ICD-

Emotional and Social Factors influence Poker Decision Making Accuracy.

Poker is a social game, where success depends on both game strategic knowledge and emotion regulation abilities. Thus, poker provides a productive environment for studying the effects of emotional and social factors on micro-economic decision making. Previous research indicates that experiencing negative emotions, such as moral anger, reduces mathematical accuracy in poker decision making. Furthermore, various social aspects of the game—such as losing against "bad players" due to "bad luck"—seem to fuel these emotional states. We designed an Internet-based experiment, where participants' (N =

BACKGROUND: In 2019, with the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping across the globe, public health systems worldwide faced severe challenges. Amid the pandemic, one simulation game, Plague Inc., has received substantial attention. This game has indirectly drawn greater public attention to public health issues by simulating pathogen transmission and disease symptoms. OBJECTIVE: Against this backdrop, this research investigates whether the gameful experience of Plague Inc. has indirectly affected public knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding COVID-19. METHODS: An online survey was conducted

Does size matter? An examination of problem gamblers' skin conductance responses to large and small magnitude rewards.

Previous research has shown that individuals with substance use disorder equally value small and large magnitude rewards. This has led some researchers to conceptualize the problematic behaviors associated with this disorder as being, at least in part, caused by a deficiency in processing reward stimuli. Considering the documented similarities between substance use disorder and disordered gambling, the current study sought to investigate whether problem gamblers also display such an aberrant pattern of incentive processing. Skin conductance responses (SCRs) to small and large magnitude wins we

Contemplation of moral dilemmas eliminates sex differences on the Iowa gambling task.

Men outperform women on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT; A. Bechara, H. Damasio, D. Tranel, & A. R. Damasio, 1997). In this study, the authors show that sex differences are not due to differences in general emotional arousal or the abilities to calculate or reverse responses. Imaging studies have shown that, during the IGT, men increase activity in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) and lateral orbital PFC, whereas women increase activity in the left medial orbital PFC. Deliberation of personal moral (PM) dilemmas also increases activity in medial and lateral dorsal PFC, whereas delibe

Co-operation with another player in a financially rewarded guessing game activates regions implicated in theory of mind.

Functional imaging studies have identified a network of brain regions associated with theory of mind (ToM); the attribution of mental states to other people. Similar regions have also been observed in studies where people play games that involve either competing or co-operating with another person. Such games are thought to place implicit demands on ToM processes. Co-operation with others has also been shown to elicit brain responses in areas associated with the processing of reward, suggesting that co-operation is an intrinsically rewarding process. In this study, we used a factorial design t

Emotion-based learning on a simplified card game: the Iowa and Bangor Gambling Tasks.

The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) has been widely used in the assessment of neurological patients with frontal lesions. Emphasis has been placed on the complexity of the task (i.e., four decks of varying contingency pattern) with the suggestion that the participant must use emotion-based learning to deal with a complex decision-making process. The present study used a single deck card game (the Bangor Gambling Task, BGT), matched in many respects with the Iowa Gambling Task, in which the contingencies varied over time (gradually becoming worse for the participant) rather than across deck (as in the

Why are immoral choices more immersive? The effect of moral decision-making on narrative immersion via moral emotions and the moderating role of autonomy - Evidence from Chinese gamers.

Moral choice systems are widely implemented in role-playing games (RPGs) to enhance players' narrative immersion. However, existing research has yielded inconsistent findings regarding whether different types of moral choices (i.e., high-morality vs. low-morality choices) produce different levels of immersion. Drawing on Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the present study incorporates autonomy and moral emotions into a model of narrative immersion and proposes an integrated model that includes both moderation and parallel mediation, examining whether moral choice influences narrative immersion
