Numerous studies have linked alpha frequency (∼10 Hz) visual entrainment to the inhibition of incoming visual information. However, although these studies have provided key evidence for the intrinsic sensitivity of the human brain to incoming alpha frequency signals, they have only examined the negative impact of alpha entrainment on target stimuli. Thus, it remains uncertain whether the perception of distracting or nonimperative stimuli can also be affected by alpha frequency entrainment. In the current study, we address this question using an adapted version of the arrow-based Erikson "flank

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia and has an increasing incidence. The neuropathogenesis of AD is suggested to be a result of the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides in the brain. To date, Aβ-induced cognitive and neurophysiologic impairments have not been illuminated sufficiently. Therefore, we aimed to examine how spontaneous brain activities of rats changed by injection of increasing Aβ doses into the brain hemispheres, and whether these changes could be used as a new biomarker for the early diagnosis of the AD. Rats were randomized into following groups: s

We describe a novel electrophysiologic signal from the motor cortex of patients with generalized dystonia - a discrete gamma-band oscillation induced by movement and associated with emergence of dystonia. This was observed using both invasive and non-invasive methods. This phenomenon is similar to the gamma oscillation reported in parkinsonian dyskinesia.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize functional network abnormalities in patients with anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) encephalitis using electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings.
METHODS: Eleven patients and eleven controls calculated relative power spectral density (PSD) and underwent functional connectivity analysis using corrected amplitude envelope correlation (AEC-c). Amplitude envelopes were extracted across five frequency bands, and network topology was analyzed by node strength. Phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) assessed cross-frequency interactions.
RESULTS: Patients showed significa

Patients with Parkinson disease (PD) often experience nonmotor symptoms including cognitive deficits, depression, and anxiety. Cognitive and affective processes are thought to be mediated by prefrontal cortico-basal ganglia circuitry. However, the topography and neurophysiology of prefrontal cortical activity during complex tasks are not well characterized. We used high-resolution electrocorticography in pFC of patients with PD and essential tremor, during implantation of deep brain stimulator leads in the awake state, to understand disease-specific changes in prefrontal activity during an emo

Visual selective attention operates through top-down mechanisms of signal enhancement and suppression, mediated by α-band oscillations. The effects of such top-down signals on local processing in primary visual cortex (V1) remain poorly understood. In this work, we characterize the interplay between large-scale interactions and local activity changes in V1 that orchestrates selective attention, using Granger-causality and phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) analysis of EEG source signals. The task required participants to either attend to or ignore oriented gratings. Results from time-varying, dire

Early and moderate Parkinson's disease patients seem to have attention dysfunctions manifested differentially in separate attention streams: top-down and bottom-up. With a focus on the neurophysiological underpinnings of such differences, this study evaluated source-localized regional activity and functional connectivity of regions in the top-down and bottom-up streams as well as any discordance between the two streams. Resting state electroencephalography was used for 36 Parkinson's disease patients and 36 healthy controls matched for age and gender. Parkinson's disease patients showed dispro

Sustained attention requires the coordination of neural activity across multiple cortical areas in the frontoparietal network, in particular the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Previous work has demonstrated that activity in these brain regions is coordinated by neuronal oscillations of the local field potential (LFP). However, the underlying coordination of activity in terms of organization of single unit (SU) spiking activity has remained poorly understood, particularly in the freely moving animal. We found that long-range functional connectivity between anatomic

UNLABELLED: Olfactory system beta (15-35 Hz) and gamma (40-110 Hz) oscillations of the local field potential in mammals have both been linked to odor learning and discrimination. Gamma oscillations represent the activity of a local network within the olfactory bulb, and beta oscillations represent engagement of a systemwide network. Here, we test whether beta and gamma oscillations represent different cognitive modes using the different demands of go/no-go and two-alternative choice tasks that previously were suggested to favor beta or gamma oscillations, respectively. We reconcile previous st

Dependent on maternal (e.g. genetic, age) and exposure (frequency, quantity, and timing) variables, the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the developing fetus are known to vary widely, producing a broad range of morphological anomalies and neurocognitive deficits in offspring, referred to as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Maternal drinking during pregnancy remains a leading risk factor for the development of intellectual disabilities in the US. While few functional findings exist today that shed light on the mechanisms responsible for the observed impairments in individuals wit

Alpha-delta sleep is the abnormal intrusion of alpha activity (8- to 13-Hz oscillations) into the delta activity (1- to 4-Hz oscillations) that defines slow-wave sleep. Alpha-delta sleep is especially prevalent in fibromyalgia patients, and there is evidence suggesting that the irregularities in the sleep of these patients may cause the muscle and tissue pain that characterizes the disorder. We constructed a biophysically realistic mathematical model of alpha-delta sleep. Imaging studies in fibromyalgia patients suggesting altered levels of activity in the thalamus motivated a thalamic model a

OBJECTIVES: The gamma-band auditory steady-state response (ASSR) is thought to reflect the function of parvalbumin-positive γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic interneurons and may be a candidate biomarker in early psychosis. Although previous cross-sectional studies have shown that gamma-band ASSR is reduced in early psychosis, whether reduced gamma-band ASSR could be a predictor of the long-term prognosis remains unknown.
METHODS: In this longitudinal study, we investigated the association between gamma-band ASSR reduction and future global symptomatic or functional outcome in early psychosis.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is an affective disorder typically accompanied by sleep disturbances. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) is an emerging intervention for treatment-resistant depression, but its effect on sleep has not been closely examined. Here we aimed to characterise sleep deficits in the Flinders sensitive line, an established rodent model of depression, and investigate the consequences of MFB stimulation on sleep-related phenotypes. Rats were implanted with bilateral stimulation electrodes in the MFB, surface electrodes to record electrocortic

Impaired hippocampal slow gamma oscillations and CA3-CA1 dysfunction may contribute to spatial memory deficits in early Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study examined whether phase-locked closed-loop transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) could modulate CA3-CA1 activity and improve memory.
Approach. A closed-loop TUS system was developed that uses the phase of endogenous slow gamma (30-45 Hz) rhythms in CA3 local field potentials as a trigger. Acute experiments were performed to assess phase-dependent neural responses. Normal rats received 14 days of stimulation to examine circuit conne

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global public health challenge, with the current BCG vaccine providing limited efficacy in adults, and available treatments being lengthy and debilitating. To overcome these challenges, we have previously developed a recombinant BCG strain expressing the detoxified E. coli Heat-Labile Toxin (LTAK63), providing increased protection in mouse models and reduced lung pathology. Here, using systems biology and RNA sequencing of lung tissues in a murine model, we uncover the molecular mechanisms underlying rBCG-LTAK63's increased protection. Immunization triggered early a

OBJECTIVES: Obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are major health concerns. The circadian rhythm is an autonomous and intrinsic timekeeping system closely associated with energy metabolism and obesity. Thus, this study explored the role of brain and muscle aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator-like1 (BMAL1), a circadian clock regulator, in the development of obesity and NAFLD.
METHODS: We generated BMAL1 knockout (BMAL1 KO) mice to imitate circadian rhythm disruption. The study comprised three groups from the same litter: BMAL1 KO mice fed a high-fat diet (to establi

Oscillatory brain activity in the theta, alpha, and gamma frequency ranges has been associated with working memory (WM). In addition to alpha and theta activity associated with WM retention, and gamma band activity with item encoding, activity in the alpha band is related to the deployment of attention resources and information. The present study sought to specify distinct roles of neuromagnetic 4-7 Hz theta, 9-13 Hz alpha, and 50-70 Hz gamma power modulation and communication in fronto-parietal networks during cued, hemifield-specific item presentation in a modified Sternberg verbal WM task i

Predictive processing theories propose that the brain builds internal models of its environment by reducing the discrepancy between internally generated predictions and external sensory signals. Prior work has linked these processes to oscillatory activity in gamma (40-100 Hz) and alpha/beta (10-30 Hz) frequency ranges. Current computational approaches face a trade-off: abstract predictive-processing models can implement self-supervised computations but often omit oscillatory spiking dynamics, whereas biophysically constrained spiking models can generate neural rhythms but often require extens
