Expression of periodontal inflammation into left ventricular hypertrophy in Type 2 diabetes mellitus: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic periodontitis, an inflammatory disease, is closely related to certain systemic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. These conditions, occurring as comorbidities, synergically affect periodontal tissues. AIM: This study aims to examine whether chronic gingivitis and chronic generalized severe periodontitis in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus are associated with increased left ventricular mass (LVM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 45 patients affected with Type 2 diabetes mellitus were recruited and divided into three g

[Keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans (Siemens' syndrome) associated with other abnormalities].

Keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans (ichthyosis follicularis or Siemens's syndrome) is considered a general form of keratosis pilaris decalvans. Localized types are keratosis pilaris atrophicans and atrophoderma vermicularis. A case of this unusual process is presented. Clinical, histological and scanning electron microscopic studies of the hair were performed. Clinically, a generalized hypotrichosis with hyperkeratotic follicular plugs is observed; especially in the scalp and the eyebrows. Other interesting clinical findings were cutis hyperelastica, gingival hypertrophy, mongoloid pal…

Sturge-Weber syndrome with massive macroglossia and anterior neck space infection- a case report and review of literature.

Sturge- Weber syndrome (SWS), is a rare neuro-cutaneous angiomatosis which affects male and females alike. The clinical manifestations include angiomas, haemangiomas of the lips, tongue and palatine region. The oral manifestations are usually unilateral and are susceptible to bleed. Patients can also present with macroglossia and maxillary bone hypertrophy which can lead to malocclusion of the oral cavity. Food accumulation due to occlusion can cause growth of bacteria which can intensify infections and can cause gingival hyperplasia. A case of a middle-aged 39 year old female was reported in

Acinic cell carcinoma of the retromolar trigone region: expanding the tumor phenotype in Cowden syndrome?

Cowden syndrome (CS) is a cancer predisposition syndrome caused by germline mutations in the PTEN tumor suppressor gene. It is associated with an increased risk of thyroid, breast and endometrial cancer but many manifestations can be found in the head and neck region, some of which are pathognomonic. Here we report a 35-year-old male referred by his dentist for evaluation of a lesion located near the retromolar trigone. Comprehensive clinical examination revealed papillomatous skin lesions, macrocephaly and gingival hypertrophy. Histopathological examination of the lesion showed an acinic cell…

Highlighting the importance of X-ray diagnostics for targeted molecular genetic analysis in the diagnosis of rare autosomal dominant craniometaphyseal dysplasia.

Autosomal dominant craniometaphyseal dysplasia (AD-CMD) is a rare condition defined by the occurrence of progressive diffuse hyperostosis of cranial bones and abnormal metaphyseal widening of the tubular bones. ANKH is known to be the only gene associated with AD-CMD. We present a case of a toddler boy with macrodolichocephaly, asymmetry of the skull, wide bulging forehead, gingival hypertrophy and irregular teeth. Physical examination, X-ray and DNA analysis were performed. All exons and flanking intron regions of ANKH were amplified by PCR and directly sequenced using the Sanger method. X-ra…

A case report of gingival enlargement associated with invasive cervical resorption.

Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) is a rare external dental resorption with unknown etiology; it progresses asymptomatically in the cervical area of the permanent teeth. Lesions are mostly misdiagnosed as internal resorption or caries, which leads to erroneous treatments. This case report presents the clinical and radiological diagnosis, as well as the results of treatment and 3-year follow-up in a 50-year-old female patient with gingival enlargement associated with ICR in tooth No. 25. Granulation tissue was removed by accessing the cervical resorption area through a flap operation. Followin

Infantile Systemic Hyalinosis Complicated with Right Atrial Thrombus and Pericardial Effusion in an Infant.

Infantile systemic hyalinosis (ISH) is a rare multisystem fatal autosomal recessive disorder that involves widespread deposition of hyaline on connective tissues and certain internal organs. The major manifestations include painful articular contractures, hyperpigmentation, subcutaneous nodules, gingival hypertrophy, failure to thrive secondary to protein-losing enteropathy, and osteolytic bone lesions. In this paper, we report a 12-month-old girl with ISH presenting with recurrent diarrhea, failure to thrive, and refractory infections. A molecular study identified a homozygous missense mutati…

Localized gingival enlargement associated with alveolar process expansion: peripheral ossifying fibroma coincident with central odontogenic fibroma.

BACKGROUND: Despite the common occurrence of localized gingival enlargements, which often represent reactive lesions, the temporal and spatial association of such a lesion with a central jaw lesion has not been reported. The purpose of this case report is to present the exceptional combination of a peripheral ossifying fibroma and a central odontogenic fibroma. The differential diagnosis and management of each lesion is reviewed. METHODS: A 45-year-old black female presented with a chief complaint of a painless protuberance in the left mandible of 1-year duration. Clinical and radiographic ex

Apparent Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome in a child with a previously undescribed form of mucolipidosis not involving the neurons.

A diagnosis of Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome was made shortly after birth in a small-for-dates infant, on the basis of a characteristic face, penoscrotal hypospadias, bilateral postaxial hexadactyly, and bilateral syndactyly of toes 2-3. The clinical course was marked by failure to thrive, severe delay, refractory myoclonic jerks beginning at age 2 months, and increasing hepatosplenomegaly. He developed corneal clouding and increased gingival hypertrophy and died at age 18 weeks. Autopsy disclosed widespread storage of mucopolysaccharides and lipids within the macrophages and, to a lesser extent,…
