Subgingival microbiome dynamic alteration associated with necrotizing periodontal disease: A case report.

RATIONALE: Necrotizing periodontal diseases (NPDs) are a group of infectious diseases varying in severity, and microorganisms are responsible for these diseases. Currently, the oral microbiota in early disease has been poorly investigated; thus, the causative pathogen and dynamic alteration of the microbiome in NPDs remain unclear. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a case of a 33-year-old female patient with severe gingival pain and localized necrotizing ulcerative gingival lesions. Conventional therapy was performed, but the necrotizing lesion continued to develop. DIAGNOSES: X-ray examination sh

Increasing CD8+ T lymphocytes predict subsequent development of intraoral lesions among individuals in the early stages of infection by the human immunodeficiency virus.

Determining the progression of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 infection based on cellular and clinical markers has become increasingly important. Although a number of studies have shown a relationship between the presence of certain oral lesions and progression to AIDS, few data exist regarding the association with T lymphocyte counts. In this study, the question of whether intraoral lesions preceded or were the consequences of changes in T lymphocyte counts was examined. A total of 116 HIV-infected patients participating in two randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials of z

Comparison of oral manifestations with CD4 count in HIV-infected patients.

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out with the primary aim of correlating oral changes and general changes of HIV-infected patients with their CD4 count. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 124 patients were selected, and after taking their informed consent, they were subjected to detailed history taking and thorough clinical examination. Specific oral lesions and general physical changes were recorded. Every patient was subjected to laboratory investigation for CD4 count. All these findings were tabulated. The clinical observation and laboratory findings were subjected to critical analysis and co

[Necrotizing periodontal disease: an update].

The aim of this paper was to provide an update on necrotizing periodontal disease (NPD). Original papers on this subject published in English from January 2002 until December 2007 were located in MEDLINE/PubMed database. Other sources were taken from the references of the selected papers. The clinical features of NPD include necrosis and ulceration of the gingival margin and the interdental papilla. These signs are usually associated to halitosis, pain, spontaneous gingival bleeding, malaise and sometimes fever. NPD usually occurs in developing countries, but few cases have also been reported

Oral spirochetes: Pathogenic mechanisms in periodontal disease.

Periodontitis is an infectious inflammatory disease resulting from infection of biofilm forming bacteria. Several bacterial factors regulate inflammatory response and cause to tissue damage and loss of connection between gingival and tooth. Since bacterial virulence factors and also host immune responses have role, understanding of periodontal disease is complex, in overall we can say that in this disease epithelium is deleted by bacteria. Oral spirochetes are related to periodontitis, among them, Treponema denticola, have been associated with periodontal diseases such as early-onset periodont

[Effects of smoking on periodontal disease].

INTRODUCTION: Smoking is an independent risk factor for periodontal disease and tooth loss. STATE OF THE ART: Smoking impairs inflammatory and immune responses to periodontal pathogens, and exerts both systemic and local effects. Periodontal disease is increased both in prevalence and severity in smokers. Smoking is a predisposing factor to acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis and is associated with an increased rate of periodontal disease in terms of pocket formation and attachment loss, as well as alveolar bone loss. Cigar, pipe, water-pipe and cannabis smoking have similar adverse effec

Oral mucosal lesions: association with the presence of antibodies to the human immunodeficiency virus.

To assess the relationship between oral lesions and antibodies to the human immunodeficiency virus, oral examinations of 803 homosexual males were conducted at the time of serologic testing. Nineteen percent were HIV seropositive. Thirty percent of antibody-positive subjects had one or more oral lesion(s), as compared with 7% of antibody-negative subjects (p less than 0.001). The presence of oral lesions was significantly associated with HIV seropositivity: a subject was 5.7 times as likely to have serum antibodies if he had one or more oral lesions (95% confidence interval, 3.5 to 9.1; p less

[Bacterial invasion in periodontitis, is it important in periodontal treatment?].

During the progression of periodontal disease bacteria invade the epithelial lining of the gingival pocket and the underlying connective tissue. This invasion was demonstrated in acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG), localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP), rapidly progressive periodontitis in adults (RPP) and in children with Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome associated periodontitis. Using morphologic criteria or fluorescent antibody staining techniques spirochetes, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Bacteroides gingivalis, B. intermedius, Actinomyces species, Fusobacterium nucleatum and

Effect of a buried knot in the healing process of dental extraction sites: a prospective study in cats.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to evaluate the effect of the buried-knot suture technique on gingival wound healing in cats undergoing dental extractions. We hypothesised that a simple buried-knot interrupted suture would provide a healing advantage at the extraction sites.MethodsA prospective, randomised, split-mouth design was used, involving 40 cats sequentially included in the study. Each side of the mouth was sutured using simple interrupted sutures, with and without a buried knot. Healing was assessed at 2, 4 and 6 weeks postoperatively through visual inspection of the maxillary sites. Indic

Similar but different: distinguishing between pemphigus vegetans and pyostomatitis-pyodermatitis vegetans.

A 51-year-old woman presented with a 4-month history of painful ulcers in the mouth and vulva, and painful vegetative plaques at intertriginous sites. Skin biopsies showed squamous hyperplasia and intraepidermal eosinophilic pustulation. Skin direct immunofluorescence (DIF) revealed intercellular deposition of IgG and C3 in the lower part of the epidermis, while serum indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) confirmed the presence of antiepithelial antibodies. The patient was diagnosed with pemphigus vegetans, and successfully treated with dapsone, prednisolone and topical steroids. Although pemphigu

Ecstasy related periodontitis and mucosal ulceration -- a case report.

Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) more commonly known as 'Ecstasy' is a widely used recreational drug. The oral and systemic effects associated with its use have been well documented. This paper highlights a previously unreported complication of MDMA use on the oral mucosa. MDMA periodontitis is illustrated with a case report and the local oral and systemic effects of MDMA use outlined.
