Measurement of natural rubber latex allergen levels in medical gloves by allergen-specific IgE-ELISA inhibition, RAST inhibition, and skin prick test.

Exposure to natural rubber latex (NRL) medical gloves poses risks to patients sensitized to NRL and to users of protective gloves. Previous studies have shown that extractable allergen levels of the gloves vary widely. Since most of the available laboratory methods of NRL allergen measurement lack adequate validation, we wanted to evaluate the performance of a recently developed competitive IgE-ELISA-inhibition method in relation to the skin prick test (SPT) and RAST inhibition, as well as to extractable protein quantification and an immunochemical latex antigen assay (LEAP). Twenty samples of

How we do it: blood contamination during management of epistaxis--awareness, utilization and availability of barrier protection.

There is a significant risk of blood contamination during the non-surgical management of epistaxis. Contamination beyond gloves happens in 55% of cases and the contamination risk to eyes as high as 18%. There is a lack of awareness and a majority of ENT doctors underestimate this risk. Protective barrier equipment and eye protection in particular are suboptimally available in all clinical areas where epistaxis is dealt with. Consequently, there is poor utilization of protective barrier equipment.

Donning and doffing of personal protective equipment for health care workers in a tertiary hospital in China: A simulation study.

The application and removal of personal protective equipment (PPE) by health care workers (HCWs) is pivotal to their health and safety and the comprehensive efficacy of hospital infection control measures. This investigation was orchestrated to elucidate the challenges that HCWs may encounter during the donning and doffing of PPE. A total of 110 participants from a tertiary hospital in China were engaged. The study employed fluorescent markers to mimic the exposure of HCWs to tainted body fluids, quantified the contamination outcomes, and evaluated adherence to procedures for donning and doffi

Application of surgical gloves in cervical and scapular skin grafting surgery: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Securing and protecting the transplanted skin grafts in the cervical and scapular regions posttransplantation is challenging. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 42-year-old male was admitted for the treatment of burns in the neck and scapular regions. Due to the large size of the burn wounds in these areas, combined with the fact that a tracheostomy and intubation had already been performed, securing the skin grafts was challenging. During the first surgery, a tie-over dressing fixation method was used, but the survival rate of the transplanted skin was suboptimal. DIAGNOSES: The patient was dia

Effects of polar and non-polar gun-cleaning solvent components on permeation characteristics of two major organic gunshot residues through disposable nitrile gloves.

While the hazards posed by lead in gunshot residues (GSRs) are recognized, little is known about the glove permeation of the organic components. The permeation behavior of the major organic GSRs methyl centralite and ethyl centralite through disposable nitrile glove material was investigated. The compounds were contained in three solvents: Hoppe's no. 9 gun cleaning solvent (GCS), n-decane, and a GCS surrogate, n-decane/ethanol 7:3 (w/w) mixture. The aim was to identify whether ethanol was the key driver of a previously reported carrier effect. A modified ASTM F739-20 method was used for perme

Comparison of Measurement Methods for Dermal Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals at the Workplace: The SysDEA Project.

There is a principal need for more precise methodology with regard to the determination of occupational dermal exposure. The goal of the Systematic analysis of Dermal Exposure to hazardous chemical Agents at the workplace project was therefore to generate scientific knowledge to improve and standardize measurement methods for dermal exposure to chemicals at the workplace. In addition, the comparability of different measurement methods was investigated. Different methods (body sampling by means of coveralls and patches, hand sampling by means of gloves and washing, and head sampling by means of

Risk of surgical glove perforation in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery, which involves several sharp instruments and fixation materials, is consistently at a high risk for cross-contamination due to perforated gloves, but it is unclear how often such perforations occur. This study aimed to address this issue. The frequency of the perforation of surgical gloves (n=1436) in 150 oral and maxillofacial surgeries including orthognathic surgery (n=45) was assessed by the hydroinsufflation technique. Orthognathic surgery had the highest perforation rate in at least 1 glove in 1 operation (91.1%), followed by cleft lip and palate surgery (5

Thumb injuries in intercollegiate men's lacrosse.

BACKGROUND: Men's intercollegiate lacrosse is played at a fast pace and with significant force. Glove protection is required. However, the thumb is at risk because of contact with opponents' sticks, the ball, other players, and the ground or artificial surface. PURPOSE: To characterize patterns of hand injuries in men's intercollegiate lacrosse and to compare them with those in similar intercollegiate stick-handling sports that require gloves. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study. METHODS: The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Injury Surveillance System was utilized to

[Preventing skin damage in beauticians].

The incidence of occupational dermatitis of the hands is particularly high in the hairdressing trade. To elucidate the role of various risk factors, and to ultimately improve primary prevention of occupational hand dermatitis, a prospective cohort study was conducted between 1992 and 1997, including 2352 hairdressing trainees. Already six weeks after the start of training (median) 35.4% had--usually mild--irritant skin changes, mainly involving the interdigital web spaces. These were associated with subsequent, possibly more severe, hand dermatitis. Reduced exposure to wet work, i.e., improved

Occupational skin diseases among dental nurses.

Out of 923 female dental nurses in the Helsinki district, 799 were interviewed using a computer-assisted telephone interview. A structured questionnaire was used to inquire about skin, respiratory symptoms, atopy, work history and methods, and exposure at work. The 328 nurses, who reported work-related dermatitis on their hands, forearms or face, were invited to an interview by an occupational physician; 245 nurses participated. 31 nurses had previously been diagnosed with an occupational skin disease (OSD). 133 nurses with a suspected OSD were selected for further clinical examinations with p

Modeling Occupational Fingernail Onycholysis Disorders in the Population of US Astronauts Who Have Engaged in Extravehicular Activity.

OBJECTIVES: Spacesuits are designed to be reliable personal spacecraft that preserve the life and well-being of the astronaut from the extremes of space. However, materials, operating pressures, and suit design requirements often result in a risk of musculoskeletal discomfort and injury to various areas of the body. In particular, this investigation looked at fingernails and their risk of developing onycholysis. METHODS: An onycholysis literature review was followed by a retrospective analysis of injury characteristics, astronaut suited training and spaceflight events, hand anthropometry, glo
