BACKGROUND: Gynecomastia refers to the presence of femalelike mammary glands in a male. This disorder can lead to significant psychologic stress and self-consciousness. This study consists of a chart review of 174 patients treated surgically between July 1, 1976, and February 27, 2001.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the features of gynecomastia displayed by mammography.
METHODS: Twelve patients with gynecomastia were examined with a high-performance GITTO-TECH mammograph (IMS Company, Italy), and the results were compared with those obtained from pathological examination.
RESULTS: The 12 cases were pathologically confirmed as gynecomastia, 10 of which were also identified by mammography while 2 misdiagnosed as male breast cancer.

Gynecomastia is a proliferation of the glandular component of the male breast. Causes include altered estrogen-androgen levels, aging, puberty, chronic disease, tumors and drugs. The physician must determine whether the condition has a physiologic or pathologic cause. Pubertal gynecomastia is generally physiologic and regresses without treatment. Sixty-nine cases of true gynecomastia are reported and etiological, clinical and surgical problems encountered in male senologic practice discussed. Endocrine and drug factors are well established, but half of the cases are idiopathic. Diagnosis is based on specific clinical, mammographic and histologic findings, treatment being surgical with or without fat aspiration or skin reduction.
