The relationship between abnormal cortical activity in the anterior cingulate gyrus and cognitive dysfunction in patients with end- stage renal disease: a fMRI study on the amplitude of low- frequency fluctuations.

BACKGROUND: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients often have cognitive dysfunction. The abnormal changes in the brains of ESRD patients are difficult to detect with routine imaging examination. Cognitive performance scales are also not an ideal tool because assessments using these scales can be subjective and might be difficult to administer in some ESRD patients. Functional magnetic resonance has the advantages of non-radiation, multidirectional imaging, good repeatability. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and an amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALF

Alcohol Use Disorder and Its Comorbidity With HIV Infection Disrupts Anterior Cingulate Cortex Functional Connectivity.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) have a heightened risk of contracting HIV infection. The effects of these two diseases and their comorbidity on brain structure have been well described, but their effects on brain function have never been investigated at the scale of whole-brain connectomes. METHODS: In contrast with prior studies that restricted analyses to specific brain networks or examined relatively small groups of participants, our analyses are based on whole-brain functional connectomes of 292 participants. RESULTS: Relative to participants without AUD, the func

Somato-dendritic morphology and axon origin site specify von Economo neurons as a subclass of modified pyramidal neurons in the human anterior cingulate cortex.

Von Economo neurons (VENs) are modified pyramidal neurons characterized by an extremely elongated rod-shaped soma. They are abundant in layer V of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and fronto-insular cortex (FI) of the human brain, and have long been described as a human-specific neuron type. Recently, VENs have been reported in the ACC of apes and the FI of macaque monkeys. The first description of the somato-dendritic morphology of VENs in the FI by Cajal in 1899 (Textura del Sistema Nervioso del Hombre y de los Vertebrados, Tomo II. Madrid: Nicolas Moya) strongly suggested that they were

Anatomical organization and neural pathways of the ovarian plexus nerve in rats.

BACKGROUND: In this work, a detailed anatomical description of the ovarian plexus nerve (OPN) in rats is presented. The distribution of the OPN was analyzed by gross anatomy; the features of the superior mesenteric ganglion (SMG) were determined by histological studies; and the localization of the postganglionic neurons innervating the ovary were identified with retrograde tracer. We studied 19 adult cyclic rats of the CIIZ-V strain. RESULTS: We found that the right OPN originates from the celiac ganglion, the lumbar ganglion of the sympathetic trunk (LGST) and the SMG. The left OPN originate

Gray Matter Atrophy within the Default Mode Network of Fibromyalgia: A Meta-Analysis of Voxel-Based Morphometry Studies.

Over the years, studies have demonstrated morphological changes in the brain of fibromyalgia (FMS). We aimed to conduct a coordinate-based meta-analytic research through systemic review on voxel-based morphometry (VBM) imaging results to identify consistent gray matter (GM) difference between FMS patients and healthy subjects. We performed a comprehensive literature search in PubMed (January 2000-December 2015) and included six VBM publication on FMS. Stereotactic data were extracted from 180 patients of FMS and 123 healthy controls. By means of activation likelihood estimation (ALE) technique

Dissociating medial frontal and posterior cingulate activity during self-reflection.

Motivationally significant agendas guide perception, thought and behaviour, helping one to define a 'self' and to regulate interactions with the environment. To investigate neural correlates of thinking about such agendas, we asked participants to think about their hopes and aspirations (promotion focus) or their duties and obligations (prevention focus) during functional magnetic resonance imaging and compared these self-reflection conditions with a distraction condition in which participants thought about non-self-relevant items. Self-reflection resulted in greater activity than distraction

Deficits in visual cognition and attention following bilateral anterior cingulotomy.

A series of eight tests of visual cognitive abilities was used to examine pre- to post-operative performance changes in a patient receiving bilateral anterior cingulotomy. Compared with a set of eight matched control participants, post-operatively, the patient exhibited deficits in (a) the ability to sequence novel cognitive operations required to generate multipart images or rotate perceptual stimuli; (b) the ability to search for, select, and compare images of objects when the instructions did not specify precisely which objects should be visualized; and, (c) the ability to select a controll

Neurosurgical treatment of Tourette's syndrome: a critical review.

Some patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS) remain disabled despite conventional treatment. Recently, neurosurgical procedures have been reported to be potentially effective interventions for such intractable cases. Clinicians are now being asked to make recommendations to patients about these candidate operations. This review explores the reported experience with neurosurgical treatment of TS to assess critically the evidence regarding risks and benefits. Toward that end, the rationale for the various procedures and the relevant neuroanatomy are outlined and recommendations for patient select

Proteasome subunit proteins and neuropathology in tauopathies and synucleinopathies: Consequences for proteomic analyses.

Accumulation of proteins in inclusions in neurological disorders is partly due to dysfunction of the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Proteasoma … AD patients revealed a significant increase in S6b subunit mRNA. This increase was not found in the gyrus cinguli anterior of patients with LBD. This differential expression of S6b most likely will result in different proteomic patterns. Here we present evidence to show that S6b coexists with a reporter for proteasomal dysfunction (ubiquitin(+1)), and we conclu …

Receptor architecture shapes the regional organization of the macaque cingulate cortex.

The cingulate cortex plays a central role in emotion, motivation, decision-making and motor control, yet its internal organization in the macaque brain remains debated. In the present study, we examined the cyto- and receptor architectonic organization of the macaque cingulate cortex and provide a 3D parcellation of the identified areas in both surface and volumetric representations. Multivariate receptor analyses consistently separated areas of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC) from those of the posterior midcingulate cortex (pMCC) and posterior cingu

Heterogeneous single-cell dynamics support stable population codes for objects in the mouse anterior cingulate cortex.

Remembering object locations is crucial for survival, yet how the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) encodes spatial features across repeated experiences has not been fully characterized. Using longitudinal calcium imaging in freely moving mice, we tracked excitatory ACC neurons while animals explored objects across multiple days. We demonstrate that the ACC employs a highly dynamic coding strategy: while the overall proportion of object-responsive neurons remains constant across sessions, the specific identities of these cells fluctuate, showing a continuous turnover alongside a small, stable co

Bilingual Language Control in the Brain: Evidence from Structural and Effective Functional Brain Connectivity.

Experience in bilingual language control is often accompanied by changes in the structure and function of the brain. Brain structural changes are also often closely related to changes in functions. Previous studies, however, have not directly explored the relationship between structural connectivity and effective functional connectivity of the brain during bilingual language control, and whether the two types of connectivity are associated with behavioral performance of language control. Using behavioral performance, functional, and diffusion imaging techniques, we found that: (1) during langu

Advances in DTI studies for diagnoses and treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

This review summarizes the current state of neuroimaging research on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), which allows for the examination of white matter abnormalities in the brain. DTI studies on individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) consistently demonstrate widespread reductions in white matter integrity in various regions of the brain, including the corpus callosum, anterior and posterior cingulate cortex, and prefrontal cortex, which are involved in emotion regulation, decision-making, and cognitive control. However, the reviewed studies

Dynamic Changes in Local Activity and Network Interactions among the Anterior Cingulate, Amygdala, and Cerebellum during Associative Learning.

Communication between the cerebellum and forebrain structures is necessary for motor learning and has been implicated in a variety of cognitive functions. The exact nature of cerebellar-forebrain interactions supporting behavior and cognition is not known. We examined how local and network activity support learning by simultaneously recording neural activity in the cerebellum, amygdala, and anterior cingulate cortex while male and female rats were trained in trace eyeblink conditioning. Initially, the cerebellum and forebrain signal the contingency between external stimuli through increases in

Effects of glabellar botulinum toxin injections on resting-state functional connectivity in borderline personality disorder.

Meta-analyses suggest a sustained alleviation of depressive symptoms through glabellar botulinum toxin (BTX) injections. This can be explained by the disruption of facial feedback loops, which may moderate and reinforce the experience of negative emotions. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by excessive negative emotions. Here, a seed-based resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) analysis following BTX (N = 24) or acupuncture (ACU, N = 21) treatment in BPD is presented on areas related to the motor system and emotion processing. RsFC in BPD using a seed-based approach

Altered metabolic connectivity within the limbic cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuit in presymptomatic and symptomatic behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is predominantly considered a dysfunction in cortico-cortical transmission, with limited direct investigation of cortical-subcortical transmission. Thus, we aimed to characterize the metabolic connectivity between areas of the limbic cortico-striato-thalamic-cortical (CSTC) circuit in presymptomatic and symptomatic bvFTD patients. METHODS: Thirty-three bvFTD patients and 33 unrelated healthy controls were recruited for this study. Additionally, six asymptomatic carriers of the MAPT P301L mutation were compared with 12 non-carriers

Dorsal anterior cingulate cortex activity during cognitive challenge in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is associated with aberrant emotional information processing while little is known about non-emotional cognitive processing biases. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) has been implicated in SAD neuropathology and is activated both by emotional and non-affective cognitive challenges like the Multisource Interference Task (MSIT). METHODS: Here, we used fMRI to compare dACC activity and test performance during MSIT in 69 SAD patients and 38 healthy controls. In addition to patient-control comparisons, we examined whether neural activity in the d

Anterior Cingulate Epilepsy: A Review.

In this review, the semiology, and characteristics of noninvasive investigations suggestive of anterior cingulate and anterior midcingulate epilepsy are detailed by the authors. The clinical presentation is representative of a recently recognized rostrocaudal gradient of functional connectivity with seizures of the anterior cingulate cortex manifesting emotional and interoceptive aura followed by a hyperkinetic or complex motor seizures. The few reports of anterior midcingulate epilepsy show a trend toward a higher proportion of sensory auras and premotor semiology. Ictal pouting, vocalization

Task fMRI studies investigating inhibitory control in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and eating disorders: A comparative meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders (EDs) share similarities in terms of clinical characteristics and deficits in inhibitory control. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether inhibitory control could serve as a common behavioural phenotype between OCD and EDs and whether it might be underpinned by shared and/or distinct neural signatures. METHOD: We performed a quantitative meta-analysis of brain function abnormalities during the inhibitory control task-based functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) scan across patients with OCD and EDs using seed-based d mappin
