Stage-Based Model of User Engagement Patterns in an Online Health Community for Cardiovascular Disease Management: Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Online health communities (OHCs) provide vital peer support and health information to individuals managing chronic conditions. However, sustained user engagement remains challenging, with many users reducing activity over time despite the ongoing benefits these platforms offer. While some individuals may improve or become more knowledgeable, sustained engagement remains critical because ongoing participation fosters trust, peer support, and continuous access to evolving health information that may persist beyond initial recovery or learning. Hence, it is important to consider how c

Social uses of personal health information within PatientsLikeMe, an online patient community: what can happen when patients have access to one another's data.

BACKGROUND: This project investigates the ways in which patients respond to the shared use of what is often considered private information: personal health data. There is a growing demand for patient access to personal health records. The predominant model for this record is a repository of all clinically relevant health information kept securely and viewed privately by patients and their health care providers. While this type of record does seem to have beneficial effects for the patient-physician relationship, the complexity and novelty of these data coupled with the lack of research in this

Perceptions of women with multiple sclerosis about osteoporosis follow-up.

Research has demonstrated that women with multiple sclerosis (MS) do not make maximum use of information about osteoporosis prevention and management, even when they are well-informed. Focus-group methodology and telephone interviews were used to study how women with MS use or could use information about osteoporosis prevention and management to influence their healthcare providers to attend to osteoporosis-related needs. Twenty-two participants were asked to discuss their own and their peers' experience of sharing osteoporosis screening results with healthcare providers, as well as factors th

Six Sigma: not for the faint of heart.

Six Sigma is an excellent quality and performance improvement tool. Like any tool, the results of using it are highly dependent on whether you use it with competence and on the right problem. This article will help you decide if your problem is well-suited for a Six Sigma approach and will suggest the optimum approach for planning and implementing Six Sigma methodology. Performance improvement methods can be grouped into two broad categories, based on the problem to be addressed. When the problem is relatively minor and localized, "evolutionary" methods may be suitable (e.g., quality circles,

Plain Language Summaries of Clinical Trial Results: A Preliminary Study to Assess Availability of Easy-to-Understand Summaries and Approaches to Improving Public Engagement.

BACKGROUND: Easy-to-understand, stand-alone factual summaries of clinical trial results have the potential to improve public understanding of and engagement with pharmaceutical research. The European Clinical Trial Regulation (EU) No. 536/2014 is a major regulatory initiative that will result in a large number of such plain language summaries (PLSs) posted in the public domain. Today, however, little is known about the extent to which PLSs are written and are available to the general public. OBJECTIVES: This preliminary study assessed (i) 20 top pharmaceutical companies' positions on improvin

Effectiveness of a self-management intervention with personalised genetic and lifestyle-related risk information on coronary heart disease and diabetes-related risk in type 2 diabetes (CoRDia): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Many patients with type 2 diabetes fail to achieve good glycaemic control. Poor control is associated with complications including coronary heart disease (CHD). Effective self-management and engagement in health behaviours can reduce risks of complications. However, patients often struggle to adopt and maintain these behaviours. Self-management interventions have been found to be effective in improving glycaemic control. Recent developments in the field of genetics mean that patients can be given personalised information about genetic- and lifestyle-associated risk of developing CH

Lactation after infant death: an analysis of Australian healthcare agencies' online health information.

Lactation is a potent signifier of maternal love and care commonly associated with early motherhood and infant survival. It is common, however, for bereaved mothers who have recently undergone miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death to produce breastmilk. Drawing on a critical feminist lens that seeks to understand how maternal subjectivities and lactation norms are constructed through public and reproductive health information, this article tests whether lactation management options after stillbirth and infant death are comprehensively covered in Australia's health organisations' online infor
