Hearing results with combination steroid therapy for sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss was described by Mc. Cabe in 1979 and, since then, many authors have tried to define, explain and correctly treat this disease. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders defines it as sudden sensorineural hearing loss of at least 30 dB in three contiguous audiometric frequencies in a period of 72 hours. Among the therapeutic strategies, corticosteroids have been shown to have the greatest benefit due to their anti-inflammatory and anti-cellular stress effects. OBJECTIVE: To determine the hearing results with combined ste…

Associations Between Hearing Health and Well-Being in Unilateral Hearing Impairment.

OBJECTIVES: To determine population-based risks of adverse effects on hearing and well-being outcomes associated with unilateral hearing impairment. DESIGN: A group of 40- to 69-year-old adults (n = 861) who reported being able to hear only in one ear and having speech reception thresholds (SRTs) in noise indicating normal hearing in that ear (SRTN/-) was selected from the UK Biobank cohort. The UK Biobank participants with SRTs indicating either normal (SRTN/N, n = 95,514) or symmetrically impaired hearing in both ears (SRTI/I, n = 17,429) were selected as comparison groups. Self-reported di…

Current topics in hearing research: Deafferentation and threshold independent hearing loss.

Hearing research findings in recent years have begun to change how we think about hearing loss and how we consider the risk of auditory damage from noise exposure. These findings include evidence of noise-induced cochlear damage in the absence of corresponding permanent threshold elevation or evidence of hair cell loss. Animal studies in several species have shown that noise exposures that produce robust but only temporary threshold shifts can permanently damage inner hair cell synaptic ribbons. This type of synaptic degeneration has also been shown to occur as a result of aging in animals and…

Congenital CMV-Associated Hearing Loss: Can Brain Imaging Predict Hearing Outcome?

OBJECTIVES: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection is the leading cause of nonhereditary sensorineural hearing loss in childhood and is also associated with CNS abnormalities. The main objective is to investigate the prognostic value of neonatal cranial ultrasound (cUS) and cranial magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) in predicting long-term hearing outcome in a large cohort of cCMV-infected symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. DESIGN: Data were prospectively collected from a multicentre Flemish registry of children with cCMV infection born between 2007 and 2016. Neonatal cUS and cMRI sca…

Bilateral versus unilateral hearing aids for bilateral hearing impairment in adults.

BACKGROUND: Acquired hearing loss is common and its incidence increases markedly with age. In most people, 'age-related' hearing loss is sensorineural (due to the loss of cochlear hair cells) and bilateral, affecting both ears to the same degree. Hearing loss categorised as mild, moderate or severe is primarily managed with hearing aids. People with bilateral hearing loss may be offered one aid, fitted to one specific ear, or two aids fitted to both ears. There is uncertainty about the relative benefits to people with hearing loss of these different strategies. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effec…

The Relationship Between Hearing Aid Self-Efficacy and Hearing Aid Satisfaction.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy for hearing aids (HAs) and satisfaction with HAs in a group of adult HA owners. METHOD: Forty-seven adults acquiring HAs (new and experienced owners) completed a demographic questionnaire, the Hearing Handicap Questionnaire (Gatehouse & Noble, 2004), and received an audiometric evaluation prior to HA fitting. Twelve weeks following the completion of the HA fitting, they completed the Measure of Audiologic Rehabilitation Self-Efficacy for Hearing Aids (Smith & West, 2006) and the Satisfaction with Ampl…

Hearing loss and fluctuating hearing levels in X-linked hypophosphataemic osteomalacia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: X-linked hypophosphataemic osteomalacia is the most common of the genetically determined forms of osteomalacia. The occurrence of hearing loss in X-linked hypophosphataemic osteomalacia has been known since 1984. However, observations on the progression of such hearing loss, and suggestions regarding possible therapy, have not previously been published. METHODS: Case report of a patient with X-linked hypophosphataemic osteomalacia and hearing loss, with three years' audiological follow up, description of empirical therapy and literature review. RESULTS: The patient …

[Sensorineural hearing loss in diabetes. Prosthetic care in hearing impaired patients].

Sensorineural hearing loss is more common in patients with diabetes than in the control nondiabetic patients, and severity of hearing loss seemed to correlate with progression of disease. This may be due to microangiopathic disease in the inner ear. References for diabetic microangiopathy are presented. Sensorineural hearing loss can often be helped by hearing aids. During the last decade there have been significant developments in hearing aid technology. Progress began with the presentation of programmable hearing aids in the late 1980's. The first hearing aids with fully digital signal proce…

Identifying congenital hearing impairment. Personal experience based on selective hearing screening.

If all degrees of permanent uni- or bilateral hypoacusis are taken into consideration, hearing impairment is the most common congenital disease. Early detection of permanent infantile hearing impairment has become extremely important in preventive medicine, since steps can be taken with hearing aids and rehabilitation to ensure better development of language and higher cognitive functions. Aim of this study is to provide a critical review of the time of diagnosis of hypoacusis at our audiology laboratory, where two methods were used to screen hearing of children with/without risk indicators. R…

Vestibular findings in sensorineural hearing disorders. Results of caloric, oculomotor and hearing tests in 205 patients with unilateral hearing dysfunction.

In 205 patients with unilateral hearing loss, 117 of cochlear and 88 of retrocochlear origin, thorough audiovestibular examinations were performed to establish the occurrence and severity of vestibular dysfunction. The results were also analysed with the aim of determining the relationships between the severity of the hearing loss, the etiology and the topical location of the hearing disorder, on the one hand, and vestibular dysfunction, recorded as reduced caloric sensitivity and occurrence of oculomotor disturbances, on the other. No correlation was found between severity of hearing loss and…

Pretreatment hearing grades and hearing recovery outcomes after primary hyperbaric oxygen treatment in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies suggest the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) but it is mostly used as an adjuvant and salvage treatment. This study evaluated the effect of primary HBOT according to pretreatment hearing grades and hearing recovery outcomes using modified Siegel's criteria in patients with ISSNHL. METHODS: Fifty-nine ISSNHL patients treated with only HBOT were included. A pure-tone audiogram was recorded before and after a course of HBOT (90 min at 203 kPa daily for 20 days). Using the modified Siegel's …
