Ventricular septal defects in a family of Yucatan miniature pigs.

We have studied the hearts from a colony of Yucatan miniature pigs with spontaneously occurring congenital defects. Ventricular septal defect was encountered in 57 of 81 neonates from 15 consecutive litters. Of 73 hearts preserved for morphological assessment, 52 were found to have defects within the ventricular septum remarkably similar to those observed in humans with deficient ventricular septum. The defects, including 3 which had closed spontaneously, were perimembranous in 34, muscular in 12 and doubly committed and juxtaarterial in 6 hearts. Atrial septal defects were found in 12 of the

The surgical anatomy of the heart in tubular hypoplasia of the transverse aorta (preductal coarctation).

Two hundred nineteen hearts with preductal coarctation (tubular hypoplasia) were analyzed in the laboratory to aid in surgical correction. One hundred fourteen were without and 105 were with ventricular septal defect. We believe the following anatomic findings may be responsible for the mortality and morbidity in surgical repair. The smallness and thinness of the left atrium (40% in those hearts without and 24% in those with ventricular septal defect); the smallness and thinness of the left ventricle (46% in those without and 32% in those with ventricular septal defect); the presence of mitral

Aortic endocarditis associated with a perforated septal membranous aneurysm in a boxer dog.

Perimembranous ventricular septal defect is a common congenital heart disease in the dog. It can partially or completely close with age by development of a membranous ventricular septal aneurysm. Aortic endocarditis is a reported complication of ventricular septal defect and membranous ventricular septal aneurysm in human beings. This report describes a case of aortic endocarditis associated with a membranous ventricular septal aneurysm perforated by a small ventricular septal defect in a boxer dog.

Congenital Heart Defects and Outcome in a Large Cohort of Down Syndrome: A Single-Center Experience from Turkey.

OBJECTIVE: Congenital heart defects occur in approximately 50% of children with Down syndrome and they contribute considerably to morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence, classification, and survival of congenital heart defects in Down syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: About 1731 Down syndrome patients who underwent echocardiography between 1986 and 2022 were evaluated. The median follow-up duration was 8.7 years (range 1-35.8 years). Congenital heart defect was grouped as cyanotic and acyanotic. RESULTS: Among the 1731 patients, 52.1% had congenital he

High-risk genes involved in common septal defects of congenital heart disease.

The septation defect is one of the main categories of congenital heart disease (CHD). They can affect the septation of the atria leading to atrial septal defect (ASD), septation of ventricles leading to ventricular septal defect (VSD), and formation of the central part of the heart leading to atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD). Disruption of critical genetic factors involved in the proper development of the heart structure leads to CHD manifestation. Because of this, to identify the high-risk genes involved in common septal defects, a comprehensive search of the literature with the help of

The role of abnormal subaortic morphometry as a substrate for left ventricular outflow tract obstruction following atrioventricular septal defect repair.

OBJECTIVES: Although left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction is a recognized risk after atrioventricular (AV) septal defect (AVSD) repair, quantitative assessments to define the substrate of the obstruction are lacking. METHODS: Morphometric analyses were based on measurements from early 2-dimensional echocardiographic scans (within 3 months postoperatively) for 117 patients (82 CAVVO = common AV valve; 35 SAVVO = separate AV valve orifices), which were compared to 50 age/weight matched controls (atrial septal defect/ventricular septal defect). Late echocardiographic analyses were p

Complete atrioventricular septal defect: Modified 2-patch technique.

Complete atrioventricular septal defect is a common congenital malformation. Various surgical corrections coexist. This video tutorial describes a correction that preserves the height of the leaflets by splitting both the anterior and the posterior bridging leaflets and using two patches to close the ventricular septal defect and the atrial septal defect separately.

Surgical management of isolated multiple ventricular septal defects. Logical approach in 130 cases.

From January 1980 through September 1990, 130 children underwent surgical closure of isolated multiple ventricular septal defects (mean age 14 +/- 18 months, mean weight 7.0 +/- 4.4 kg). Sixty-one were less than 1 year of age. Sixty-one children had pulmonary protection, 51 had pulmonary artery banding, and 10 had pulmonary valve stenosis. All other patients had severe pulmonary hypertension (mean systolic pressure 75.7 +/- 20.5 mm Hg and already disabling heart failure (New York Heart Association classes III and IV). The surgical management was based on the location of the defects and the ven

Intermediate type atrioventricular septal defect in the elderly.

A 65-year-old woman with intermediate type atrioventricular septal defect had been undiagnosed until initial presentation with congestive heart failure. She underwent surgery when the ventricular septal defect was found to be restrictive. The atrioventricular valve was similar to the common atrioventricular valve, but was connected to the crest of the ventricular septal defect. Surgery included direct closure of the ventricular septal defect, repair of the cleft in the atrioventricular valve, and ostium primum closure. Postoperative echocardiography indicated successful heart repair. We presen

Correction of adult-type VSD causing aortic valve endocarditis through aortotomy.

Ventricular septal defects are the most common congenital abnormality diagnosed in children but account for only 10 percent of congenital heart defects in adults. Although many defects close spontaneously before adulthood, many others persist, predisposing to endocarditis, and other complications. Herein, we report a case of a known, asymptomatic, perimembranous ventricular septal defects that has complicated at 53 years of age with the need for surgery due to native aortic valve endocarditis and concomitant severe aortic regurgitation. We opted to surgically repair the ventricular septal defe

The pathology of subaortic obstruction.

BACKGROUND: In hearts having the atriums connected only to a dominant left ventricle, typified by double-inlet left ventricle but seen also in lesions such as tricuspid atresia, subaortic obstruction, when it exists, is usually found at the level of the ventricular septal defect when the aorta is supported by the rudimentary right ventricle. METHODS: Heart specimens were examined to determine the nature and position of the ventricular septal defect existing between dominant left and rudimentary right ventricles when the ventriculoarterial connections are discordant. RESULTS: Most commonly, t

Ventricular septal dysfunction after surgical closure of multiple ventricular septal defects.

BACKGROUND: We assessed the global and regional ventricular septal functions using conventional echocardiography and two-dimensional speckle tracking imaging in children with postoperative multiple ventricular septal defects. METHODS: Thirty-six children were studied: 16 with postoperative multiple ventricular septal defects and 20 normal control subjects. In children with multiple ventricular septal defects, 60 ventricular septal defects were closed using one of three different techniques (patch closure, the sandwich technique, direct closure). Speckle tracking imaging was applied to three s

[Ebstein's anomaly and interventricular communication, a rare association].

The Ebstein's anomaly is a malformation of the tricuspid valve, in which the septal and posterior leaflets are attached to the wall of the right ventricle. The usual association is with an atrial septal defect, followed by pulmonary stenosis and pulmonary atresia; the ventricular septal defect is unusual. We present three cases with diagnosis of Ebstein's anomaly and ventricular septal defect. The initial presentation of the first two was an acyanotic heart defect with congestive heart failure and increased pulmonary flow, whereas the third patient was cyanotic and functionally impaired. The t

Biventricular morphology in adults born with a ventricular septal defect.

Ventricular septal defects - large, surgically closed or small, untreated - have demonstrated lower peak exercise capacity compared with healthy controls. The mechanisms behind these findings are not yet fully understood. Therefore, we evaluated biventricular morphology in adults with a ventricular septal defect using MRI. Adults with either childhood surgically closed or small, untreated ventricular septal defects and healthy controls underwent cine MRI for the evaluation of biventricular volumes and quantitative flow scans for measurement of stroke index. Scans were analysed post hoc in a bl

Two Cases of Prenatally Diagnosed Membranous and Muscular Ventricular Septal Aneurysms.

A ventricular septal aneurysm is a rare heart defect located in the muscular or membranous part of the septum. Muscular ventricular septal aneurysms are usually isolated, with a favorable prognosis. Membranous ventricular septal aneurysms are often associated with other heart anomalies, could result in serious complications, and may require surgical treatment. We describe 2 cases of prenatally diagnosed ventricular septal aneurysms: an isolated membranous ventricular septal aneurysm with a good outcome, which was initially misdiagnosed as an atrioventricular septal defect; and a muscular ventr
