Coordinating extreme-heat adaptation at mega-sporting events: early warning and cost sharing in a multi-actor differential game.

INTRODUCTION: Coordinating extreme-heat adaptation at mega-sporting events is a time-dependent public health challenge because public authorities, event organizers, and participating teams control different protective measures while heat risk evolves over a finite competition horizon. Existing sport-heat research describes exposure and prevention yet provides limited guidance on how adaptation should be timed, coordinated, and financed across responsible institutions. METHODS: We develop a three-actor linear-quadratic differential game with gross event heat-risk pressure and accumulated adapt

Investigating city bike rental usage and wet-bulb globe temperature.

Extreme heat exacerbates human illness and constrains the intensity and/or duration of outdoor activities. Temperature is an incomplete metric of outdoor heat exposures. By contrast, Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) is a heat exposure metric that considers air temperature, moisture, solar radiation, and wind speed. In the USA, bicycle activity increased by 60% from 2000 to 2010. Several studies examined weather conditions and bicycling activities. However, few studies examined how the public should conduct their daily physical activities per weather conditions. This study investigated the rela

Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke Among Active Component Members of the U.S. Armed Forces, 2018-2022.

The most serious types of heat illness, heat exhaustion and heat stroke, are occupational hazards of the military's training and operational environments. These conditions can be mitigated with appropriate situational aware-ness and effective countermeasures. In 2022, the crude incidence rates of heat stroke and heat exhaustion among active component service members were 32.1 and 147.7 per 100,000 person-years, respectively. The rates of incident heat stroke and heat exhaustion generally declined during the 2018 to 2022 surveillance period. In 2022, those at highest risk were men, those younge

[Disorders caused by prolonged exposure to heat].

France has suffered last summer an unprecedented heat wave that led to an exceptional short-term surge of mortality. Cumulative deaths between August 1st to 14th are estimated at 14,800. Epidemiological studies carried out by the Institute de Veille Sanitaire will show the circumstances and risk factors leading to heat-related pathologies. A literature review already shows the principles of prevention, the circumstances of occurrences during similar past heat waves, the risk factors and the principles of treatment. Prolonged exposure to heat can be the initial cause of death, mainly in the eld

Selenomethionine alleviates environmental heat stress induced hepatic lipid accumulation and glycogen infiltration of broilers via maintaining mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum homeostasis.

With the increasing of global mean surface air temperature, heat stress (HS) induced by extreme high temperature has become a key factor restricting the poultry industry. Liver is the main metabolic organ of broilers, HS induces liver damage and metabolic disorders, which impairs the health of broilers and affects food safety. As an essential trace element for animals, selenium (Se) involves in the formation of antioxidant system, and its biological functions are generally mediated by selenoproteins. However, the mechanism of Se against HS induced liver damage and metabolic disorders in broile

Heat stress disrupts the ovarian microenvironment in cattle: An in vivo analysis of hormonal alterations, oxidative stress-induced apoptosis, and reduced pregnancy outcomes.

Heat stress during summer impairs reproductive function in cattle. Since previous studies have largely employed in vitro models to examine heat stress effects on oocytes and mural granulosa cells (MGCs), comprehensive in vivo research is required to elucidate its multifaceted impact on cattle fertility. This study aimed to clarify the mechanisms of heat stress-induced reproductive changes by comparing ovarian microenvironment, hormone levels, and pregnancy rates in cattle across seasons. Compared with the control group (temperature-humidity index [THI] <72, n = 87), the heat-stressed group (HS

Responding to heatwave intensity: Excess Heat Factor is a superior predictor of health service utilisation and a trigger for heatwave plans.

OBJECTIVE: To determine which measures of heatwave have the greatest predictive power for increases in health service utilisation in Perth, Western Australia. METHODS: Three heatwave formulas were compared, using Poisson or zero-inflated Poisson regression, against the number of presentations to emergency departments from all causes, and the number of inpatient admissions from heat-related causes. The period from July 2006 to June 2013 was included. A series of standardised thresholds were calculated to allow comparison between formulas, in the absence of a gold standard definition of heatwav

Circular RNA-mediated regulatory networks drive oxidative stress and metabolic dysregulation in broiler breast muscle under chronic heat stress.

Chronic heat stress (CHS) disrupts broiler breast muscle physiology homeostasis, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, 144 male Arbor Acres broilers (28 d old) were randomly allocated into 3 treatment groups: the normal control (NC) group (22 °C, ad libitum), the heat stress (HS) group (22 °C, ad libitum), the pair-fed (PF) group (22 °C, feed matched to HS). After two weeks of CHS, the HS group exhibited elevated ROS production, increased antioxidant enzyme activities (GSH-Px, CAT, SOD), and higher MDA and carbonyl levels, accompanied by pronounced ultrastructu

Time-restricted feeding alleviates heat stress-induced liver ferroptosis in piglets via nuclear receptor NR1D1-mediated transcription modulation.

Heat stress (HS) disturbs hepatic metabolic homeostasis and redox balance, compromising antioxidant capacity and mitochondrial function. Ferroptosis, a lipid peroxidation-associated form of regulated cell death, has been implicated in redox-sensitive metabolic disorders. Whether nutritional timing influences HS-associated ferroptotic responses in the liver remains unclear. This study examined the effects of time-restricted feeding (TRF) on hepatic redox regulation and ferroptosis-related molecular pathways under chronic heat exposure. Piglets were exposed to cyclic heat challenge (35°C, 4 h/d)

Effect of chronic heat stress on some physiological and immunological parameters in different breed of broilers.

The differences in physiological and immunological parameters and pathological damage to organ tissues exposed to chronic heat stress provide the basis for evaluating heat resistance of different chicken breeds (white recessive rock [WRR] and The Lingshan [LS]). Ninety broilers of each breed were divided equally into a chronic heat stress group and a no heat stress group. The effects of chronic heat stress on the physiological and immunological parameters of broilers were analyzed using flow cytometry, ELISA, RT-qPCR, etc. Under heat stress conditions: (1) H and H/L values were significantly i

Exogenous melatonin alleviates heat stress-induced metabolic slowdown affecting broiler growth by improving lipid metabolism.

Heat stress (HS) induces a metabolic slowdown that impairs growth in livestock and poultry. The present study sought to examine the function and underlying mechanisms of melatonin (MT) in mitigating lipid metabolism disorders caused by HS in broiler chickens. Sixty Shengnong 901 broiler chickens were randomly divided into six groups (n = 10), including a control group, a high-dose MT intervention control group (2.0 mg/kg body weight), HS group, and MT low-dose (0.5 mg/kg body weight), medium-dose (1.0 mg/kg body weight), and high-dose (2.0 mg/kg body weight) MT intervention groups. Biological responses to heat stress in livestock: From thermoregulation to cellular and epigenetic adaptation.

Climate change driven increases in ambient temperature have positioned heat stress (HS) as a major biological constraint on livestock productivity and welfare. Excessive thermal load disrupts thermoregulatory balance, reduces feed intake and digestive efficiency, and perturbs immune and endocrine function, culminating in impaired energy metabolism and systemic dysfunction. Reproductive processes show pronounced thermal sensitivity, as HS alters hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis signaling, compromises gametogenesis, reduces embryo viability, and suppresses fertility. Productive traits, includ

A proinflammatory immune response underlies impairment of intestinal barrier function in Holstein calves exposed to heat stress.

Heat stress has been associated with promoting a systemic and local proinflammatory response, which could involve impaired intestinal structure and function in growing dairy calves. We hypothesized that heat stress-induced reduction of the intestinal barrier function would be associated with changes in immune cell counts, and the administration of the glucocorticoid dexamethasone would attenuate the proinflammatory response and restore intestinal barrier function. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of reducing the proinflammatory response on systemic and local immune cell c
