Hemoperitoneum as a result of coital injury without associated vaginal injury is an extremely rare entity, and evidence by only five cases that have been reported in the medical literature to date. We report five additional cases encountered in two medical centers. Two of these were ruptured corpus luteum cysts, one was a laceration of the round ligament, another was a laceration of an ovary, and the fifth was rupture of a serous cystadenoma. This diagnosis should be considered in patients with hemoperitoneum after coitus.

Hemoperitoneum in cirrhosis is a life-threatening condition that requires emergent evaluation. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) permits multiple dynamic characterizations of abdominal structures through all vascular phases, and contrast extravasation or the presence of microbubbles in the ascites could be a sensitive tool. The medical records of 19 horses with acute hemoperitoneum were reviewed. The causes for the hemoperitoneum were idiopathic (8 horses), splenic hematoma with capsular tear (7), bleeding from the reproductive tract (3), multicentric hemangiosarcoma (1), and systemic amyloidosis (1).
