Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) were extracted from three Bacteroides nodosus isolates by the aqueous phenol method and purified by ultracentrifugation. The structure of B nodosus LPS appears to be similar to enterobacterial LPS, with the polysaccharide component joined to the lipid A moiety through an acid-labile 2-keto-3-deoxyoctonic acid (KDO) linkage. A method is described for the isolation and purification of infectious mononucleosis receptor (IMR) in high yield from sheep erythrocyte stroma. The procedure involves extraction of the stroma successively with boiling acetone, 100, 75 and 50% ethanol which removes approximately 40% non-infectious mononucleosis-active material. Amylopectin sulfate, a sulfated polysaccharide that has an antipeptic property, was examined for its ability to bind gastric mucins. After chemically cross-linking the amylopectin sulfate into an insoluble gel, its binding with mucins isolated from antral and fundic mucosa of canine stomachs was studied with chromatography. The effects of dl-(15R)-15 methyl-PGE2 methyl ester (PG6E), in experimental ulcers induced by absolute alcohol, HCl, indomethacin, pyloric ligation and chronic acetic acid in rats were studied. The effects of lysoPC on gallbladder net fluid transport and motility were investigated by a perfusion technique in the anesthetized cat. It was found that addition of 1 mumol/ml lysoPC to the buffer perfusate resulted in an immediate contraction of the gallbladder and also a change in net fluid transport from a basal absorption of 0.71 ml/hr to a secretion of 0.34 ml/hr.
