Adhesions: the early history.

Intra-abdominal adhesions following tuberculous and other peritoneal inflammatory diseases were well recognized by early pathologists, but it was not until the advent of abdominal surgery in the late 19th century that postoperative adhesions, and thus the complication of small bowel obstruction, became common. The first recorded operation for this condition is described.

Infectious diarrhea in history.

Throughout history, infectious diarrhea has been associated with crowding, poor sanitation, and war. Although descriptions of infectious diarrhea exist in the earliest records of civilization, effective measures for prevention were not widely or consistently used until the modern era of active public health promotion. Advances in the understanding of etiologies and therapies have revolutionized prognosis; however, constant vigilance against lapses in public health is necessary to prevent outbreaks of disease.

History of human parasitology.

Humans are hosts to nearly 300 species of parasitic worms and over 70 species of protozoa, some derived from our primate ancestors and some acquired from the animals we have domesticated or come in contact with during our relatively short history on Earth. Our knowledge of parasitic infections extends into antiquity, and descriptions of parasites and parasitic infections are found in the earliest writings and have been confirmed by the finding of parasites in archaeological material. The systematic study of parasites began with the rejection of the theory of spontaneous generation and the prom…

[History, controversy and pathogenesis].

In this paper, we discuss the historical and pathophysiological aspects of syringomyelia. Defined as fluid cavities extending beyond several segments within the spinal cord this pathological entity is a condition with many possible causes. Hindbrain herniation is the commonest foramen magnum abnormality associated with the so called "hindbrain related syringomyelia". A history of birth injury, a small posterior fossa, an arachnoid scarring of the basal cisterna, a segmentation abnormality of the superior cervical vertebrae, a hydrocephalus or arachnoid cyst of the posterior fossa are often pre…

Depersonalization: a conceptual history.

As with other clinical phenomena, the historical analysis of the term, concepts and behaviours involved in the construction of 'depersonalization' should provide researchers with an essential frame for its empirical study. Before the term was coined in 1898, and under a variety of names, behaviours typical of 'depersonalization' were reported by Esquirol, Zeller, Billod, and Griesinger. The word 'depersonnalisation, derived from a usage in Amiel's Journal intime, was first used in a technical sense by Ludovic Dugas. The new disorder has since been explained as resulting from pathological chang

Amylin: history and overview.

The presence of amyloid deposits in the pancreas was first described at the beginning of the 20th century. However, it was not until 1987 that the structure of the amylin molecule was identified. Amylin is a 37-amino-acid peptide hormone that is co-secreted with insulin by the pancreatic beta-cells in response to a nutrient stimulus. It is deficient in patients with Type 1 diabetes and elevated in patients in the early stages of Type 2 diabetes, a condition which is characterized by hyperinsulinaemia. Elevation of plasma amylin levels has also been described in patients with impaired glucose t

Acute abdomen. The history.

Correct decision, when managing the acute abdomen in children, are based on careful clinical assessment. An accurate history and a detailed examination will provide more information than a multitude of investigations. The chronological order to appearance and the progression of each individual symptom must be obtained. Consideration of these dynamic changes will often yield an accurate diagnosis. This article outlines a structured approach to history taking and details the common causes of acute abdomen in childhood.

[History of neurovascular ultrasonography].

History of diagnostic ultrasound begins with the Austrian physicist Christian Doppler, who described in 1842 the Doppler principle. 40 years later, the Curies discovered the reverse piezoelectric effect that produces ultrasound. The first ultrasonic devices were designed at the beginning of the 20th century and were used among other things for detection of submarines. Development during World War II permitted the construction of the first transcranial (1940) and extracranial (1949) ultrasound imaging units. Continuous-wave Doppler sonography was introduced in clinical practice 20 to 30 years l…

[History of accommodative strabismus].

Starting with the ideas of Donders, a method has been developed of non-surgical treatment of the so-called accommodative esotropia (glasses, bifocals, prisms, miotics), surgery being only considered if insufficient results are obtained: these results are analyzed. The method of Gobin is in opposition with this method by not admitting the role of hypermetropia and by doing systematically a "four muscles surgery" (on two medial recti and on two oblique muscles).

History of pediatric oncology.

Pediatric oncology emerged as a subspeciality in the United States of America following the observations in 1948 of Farber and his associates of the benefits of chemotherapy for acute leukemia. The establishment of national cooperative chemotherapy groups furthered its development. More recently, the subspeciality has been recognized by the American Board of Pediatrics. Even more recently, training programs for the subspecialty have been given accreditation. Parallel to development of the specialty in the United States has been a similar evolution of pediatric oncology in Europe.

History of benzodiazepine dependence.

The benzodiazepines were developed in the 1950s, some introduced in the 1960s, and many more since then. Pharmacologically, they are sedative/hypnotics akin to alcohol, chloral, the barbiturates, and meprobamate. All have been widely used both within and outside the licit medical context. Usage of benzodiazepines increased dramatically during the 1960s and early 1970s; tranquilizer but not hypnotic usage has since declined. Both abuse and misuse were documented early, but the incidence was deemed low in view of the widespread prescription. Normal-dose physical dependence was first suspected in

History and screen memories.

I propose that shared historical data can figure in a way comparable to personal history simultaneously to represent and conceal a person's childhood conflicts and memories. This phenomenon is compared to that of screen memories as described and defined by Freud. Two clinical examples demonstrating this vicissitude have been given. One is taken from the analytic transferential process, the other from an (extra-transference) consultation. The questions of the specific suitability of history for such a use is explored.
