A case of prenatally diagnosed non-immune hydrops fetalis, that was later shown to be caused by listeriosis, is presented, and the clinical course, as well as the appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are described. We conclude, that listeriosis should be excluded, whenever a non-immune hydrops fetalis is associated with septicemia, influenza-like illness and fever of unknown origin.

Intrauterine supraventricular tachycardia is one of the main causes of non-immunological intrauterine hydrops fetalis. Without early diagnosis and treatment it may terminate in fetal death or delivery of a baby with severe hydrops and extreme heart failure. With the improvement in non-invasive imaging techniques in prenatal medicine, this condition can be diagnosed early and treated successfully. A case is described of such a newborn diagnosed in utero and treated before and after delivery, and the different therapeutic approaches to congenital supraventricular tachycardia are discussed.

Thirty-eight cases of nonimmune hydrops fetalis were evaluated by detailed real-time ultrasonography and two-dimensional echocardiography. Before ultrasound evaluation, all mothers had a complete blood count, titers for toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, and herpes (TORCH screen), serum albumin, and a Kleihauer-Betke stain of a peripheral blood smear. Karyotyping of fetal fibroblasts or lymphocytes was performed if these examinations were not diagnostic. A probable etiology was found in 27 (71%) cases. These were chromosome abnormality (nine), pulmonary (three), viral (three), hematologi…

A rational attitude of management of the nonimmune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) is stressed in order to achieve an optimal outcome of both the mother and the newborn. Of the two cases reported, both had an underlying cardiac condition. The first was due to rapid supraventricular tachyarrhythmia and responded favorably to intrauterine medication with digoxin and the subsequent delivery of a well baby. In the second case, cesarean section was performed unnecessarily for a fetal indication, since the hydropic infant died soon after birth from a severe cardiac malformation which was not unequivocally di…

Five pregnant Southeast Asian women presenting during a 14-month period with microcytic anemia, preeclampsia, and size-date discrepancies were all ultimately diagnosed as carrying fetuses with homozygous alpha-thalassemia hydrops fetalis. The perinatal complications of this hemoglobin disorder are unique to persons of this ethnic background and include uniform fatality for the affected infant, maternal preeclamptic morbidity, and retained placenta. In this report the obstetric ultrasound findings are presented and the clinical manifestations are discussed, with recommendations made to reduce t…

Ten cases of hydrops fetalis not associated with serologic incompatibility between mother and infant were studied by autopsy. Classic trisomy 21 was present in two, and in six others the postmortem examination revealed major congenital abnormalities (hydrometrocolpos-polydactyly syndrome, achondrogenesis type 2, congenital adenomatoid malformation of the lung, and aortic valvular dysplasia with left ventricular endocardial fibroelastosis). In two instances, anasarca was associated with a congenital tumor: a sacrococcygeal teratoma and an adrenal neuroblastoma. In six fetuses, prenatal diagnosi…

Sixty-one cases of nonimmunologic hydrops fetalis were studied. The incidence of nonimmunologic hydrops fetalis, 1 in 3748 births, was unchanged in 2 decades. The mortality from nonimmunologic hydrops fetalis remained high (98%). Polyhydramnios (75%), anemia (45%), and preeclampsia (29%) were the commonest prenatal maternal complications, whereas postpartum hemorrhage or difficulty with placental delivery, or both, occurred in 64%. Ultrasound examination always was successful in detecting the hydropic state. Many presumed etiologic factors were noted, although in 38% no possible cause was foun…

Nineteen cases of nonimmunologic hydrops fetalis occurring during a nine-year period were reviewed. The pregnancies were complicated by hydramnios (78%) and preterm delivery (84%). Hydramnios appears to be the most useful indicator of the pregnancy at risk; its occurrence should prompt ultrasonographic investigation for evidence of hydrops. Modalities available for antenatal diagnosis of underlying fetal abnormalities include amniocentesis, serologic tests, fetal cardiac monitoring, radiography, hemoglobin electrophoresis and glucose tolerance testing. A specific cause for the hydrops may not …

A white primigravida with acute toxemia and hydramnios delivered a hydropic male infant who died. A neuroblastoma of the right adrenal gland was found with metastic spread to the liver and other organs. The placental capillaries contained tumor cells. Pathogenesis of hydrops, hydramnios, and maternal toxemia and the consequence of tumor cells in the placenta are discussed.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the survival rate of hydrops fetalis after fetal interventions and neonatal intensive care.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of patients diagnosed with hydrops fetalis from January 2009 to December 2019 at Changhua Christian Children's Hospital. All cases had abnormal fluid accumulation in at least two body compartments during pre- and postnatal examination. The primary outcome measure was the mortality rate. We also collected information regarding disease etiology, duration of hospital stay, Apgar score, gestational age at birth, initial hydrops fetalis dia…

We report the case of a premature neonate with ascites and dysmorphic facial features at birth. The chromosomal analysis showed an interstitial deletion of chromosome 10, that is, 46, XX, del(10)(q22.3q24.1). This is the first known case of a patient with interstitial deletion of chromosome 10 with symptoms of ascites and hydrops.

A case of an infant born in association with a large chorioangioma of the placenta is reported. The mother was complicated with polyhydramnios and premature labor. The fetal complications were congestive heart failure and hydrops fetalis. This case serves to emphasize that it is necessary to examine the placenta in every perinatal autopsy case.

We describe a premature neonate with endocardial fibrosis associated with hydrops fetalis. The infant did not have any other cardiac disorder and expired with congestive heart failure when five days old. Endocardial fibroelastosis has been previously described in neonates but is rare and is usually associated with other cardiac malformations. In only two previous reports was endocardial fibroelastosis associated with hydrops and in both of these cases there were also valvular deformities. We also discuss the possible significance of this association.
