Five green monkeys were used in this study. Three animals were fed a scorbutigenic diet and the remaining two served as controls. Biopsies were dissected from the vestivular gingiva and dorsal skin and polyvinyl sponges were implanted subcutaneously during 4 week periods throughout the experimental period. Recently, urinary pyridinoline and deoxypyridinoline have been commonly employed as bone resorption markers. We studied these markers in 17 patients with hyperthyroidism, 15 undergoing long-term anticonvulsant drug therapy, and 28 with postmenopausal osteoporosis. The present study shows that appendicitis and its associated peritoneal inflammation produce microscopic and biochemical changes in the peritoneal membrane. Brevianamides X (1) and Y (2) are relatively new members of the bicyclo[2.2.2]diazaoctane alkaloid family, whose biosynthetic origins remain unresolved. We report the asymmetric total synthesis of (+)-brevianamides Y (2), Z (16) and (±) brevianamide X (1) through a hydroxyproline-guided cascade.
