Defining recurrent implantation failure: a profusion of confusion or simply an illusion?

Recurrent implantation failure (RIF) is a poorly defined clinical scenario marked by failure to achieve pregnancy after multiple embryo transfers. The causes and definitions of implantation failure are heterogeneous, posing limitations on study design as well as the interpretation and application of findings. Recent studies suggest a novel, personalized approach to defining RIF. Here, we review the implantation physiology and definitions of the implantation rate, failure, and RIF.

Pop-out illusion as the initial presentation of posterior cortical atrophy.

Posterior cortical atrophy is a rare neurodegenerative disease that presents with progressive higher-order visual impairment. We describe a case of posterior cortical atrophy in a 62-year-old, right-handed man, who initially presented with difficulty in viewing the television screen, followed by reading difficulty a few months later, and then developed features of Balint's syndrome over the course of 3 years. We report an illusion, which we noticed at the time of the initial presentation, where the characters in the television appeared to be popping out of the screen. We describe this as the "

Effects of Chronic Alcohol Use Disorder on the Visual Tilt Illusion.

Rationale: Among the serious consequences of alcohol use disorder (AUD) is the reduced ability to process visual information. It is also generally agreed that AUD tends to occur with disturbed excitation-inhibition (EI) balance in the central nervous system. Thus, a specific visual behavioral probe could directly qualify the EI dysfunction in patients with AUD. The tilt illusion (TI) is a paradigmatic example of contextual influences on perception of central target. The phenomenon shows a characteristic dependence on the angle between the inducing surround stimulus and the central target test.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Effect on Virtual Hand Illusion.

Virtual reality (VR) is effectively used to evoke the mirror illusion, and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) synergistically facilitates this illusion. This study investigated whether a mirror virtual hand illusion (MVHI) induced by an immersive, first-person-perspective, virtual mirror system could be modulated by tDCS of the primary motor cortex. Fourteen healthy adults (average age 21.86 years ±0.47, seven men and seven women) participated in this study, and they experienced VR with and without tDCS-the tDCS and sham conditions, each of which takes ∼30 minutes-on separate days

The size-weight illusion in visual form agnosic patient DF.

The size-weight illusion is a perceptual illusion where smaller objects are judged as heavier than equally weighted larger objects. A previous informal report suggests that visual form agnosic patient DF does not experience the size-weight illusion when vision is the only available cue to object size. We tested this experimentally, comparing the magnitudes of DF's visual, kinesthetic and visual-kinesthetic size-weight illusions to those of 28 similarly-aged controls. A modified t-test found that DF's visual size-weight illusion was significantly smaller than that of controls (zcc = -1.7). A te

[A case of various illusion, and hallucination caused by occipital lobe infarction].

A 70-year-old right-handed man noticed that the right side of the screen on his television displayed a time lag compared to the other side. For five days before admission, he had characteristic polyopia, visual photopia, and complex hallucination. Upon neurological examination, he showed no abnormal findings except for right homonymous hemianopia. MRI showed acute infarction of the occipital gyri and part of the lingual gyrus in the left occipital lobe. After admission, he experienced various visual hallucinations and visual illusions, including metamorphopsia and micropia, many times. They gr

Modulation of fronto-parietal connections during the rubber hand illusion.

Accumulating evidence suggests that parieto-frontal connections play a role in adjusting body ownership during the Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI). Using a motor version of the rubber hand illusion paradigm, we applied single-site and dual-site transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to investigate cortico-spinal and parietal-frontal connectivity during perceived rubber hand ownership. Healthy volunteers received a conditioning TMS pulse over left anterior intraparietal sulcus (aIPS) and a test TMS pulse over left primary motor cortex (M1). Motor Evoked Potentials (MEPs) were recorded at rest and d

The influence of skin colour on the experience of ownership in the rubber hand illusion.

Racial prejudice is associated with a fundamental distinction between "us" and "them"-a distinction linked to the perceived overlap between representations of the self and others. Implicit prejudice has been shown to reduce the intensity of White individuals' hand ownership sensation as induced by the Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI) with dark rubber hands. However, evidence for this link to implicit prejudice comes from self-report questionnaire data regarding the RHI. As an alternative, we assessed the onset time of the RHI. We hypothesized that onset time of the RHI would be higher for the black

Motion Illusion-Evidence towards Human Vestibulo-Thalamic Projections.

Contemporary studies speculated that cerebellar network responsible for motion perception projects to the cerebral cortex via vestibulo-thalamus. Here, we sought for the physiological properties of vestibulo-thalamic pathway responsible for the motion perception. Healthy subjects and the patient with focal vestibulo-thalamic lacunar stroke spun a hand-held rheostat to approximate the value of perceived angular velocity during whole-body passive earth-vertical axis rotations in yaw plane. Vestibulo-ocular reflex was simultaneously measured with high-resolution search coils (paradigm 1). In prim

Association of anandamide with altered binocular depth inversion illusion in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVES: Binocular depth inversion illusion (BDII) represents an illusion of visual perception that involves higher-order visual and cognitive processes. Its impairment has been linked to psychotic conditions and identified as a marker for at-risk mental states. The endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS) is involved in various neurophysiological processes. One of its key components, anandamide, is involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Little is known about its impact on BDII alterations. Therefore, we explored associations between BDII and anandamide levels. METHODS: BDII was cond

Illusory Tactile Motion Perception: An Analog of the Visual Filehne Illusion.

We continually move our body and our eyes when exploring the world, causing our sensory surfaces, the skin and the retina, to move relative to external objects. In order to estimate object motion consistently, an ideal observer would transform estimates of motion acquired from the sensory surface into fixed, world-centered estimates, by taking the motion of the sensor into account. This ability is referred to as spatial constancy. Human vision does not follow this rule strictly and is therefore subject to perceptual illusions during eye movements, where immobile objects can appear to move. Her

Microsaccades and blinks trigger illusory rotation in the "rotating snakes" illusion.

Certain repetitive arrangements of luminance gradients elicit the perception of strong illusory motion. Among them, the "Rotating Snakes Illusion" has generated a large amount of interest in the visual neurosciences, as well as in the public. Prior evidence indicates that the Rotating Snakes illusion depends critically on eye movements, yet the specific eye movement types involved and their associated neural mechanisms remain controversial. According to recent reports, slow ocular drift--a nonsaccadic type of fixational eye movement--drives the illusion, whereas microsaccades produced during a

Motorcycle accident risk could be inflated by a time to arrival illusion.

PURPOSE: Drivers adopt smaller safety margins when pulling out in front of motorcycles compared with cars. This could partly account for why the most common motorcycle/car accident involves a car violating a motorcyclist's right of way. One possible explanation is the size-arrival effect in which smaller objects are perceived to arrive later than larger objects. That is, drivers may estimate the time to arrival of motorcycles to be later than cars because motorcycles are smaller. METHODS: We investigated arrival time judgments using a temporal occlusion paradigm. Drivers recruited from the st

Use of the Hermann grid illusion in the measurement of contrast perception in dyslexia.

We measured contrast thresholds for perception of the Hermann grid illusion, using different contrast polarities and mean luminances, in dyslexics and non-dyslexics. Both groups of subjects gave significantly lower thresholds with grids having dark squares and light paths, but there was no significant threshold difference between groups. Perceived strength of illusion was also measured in grids at suprathreshold contrast levels. Dyslexics perceived the illusion to be significantly stronger than non-dyslexics when the grid had light paths and low luminance.

Exploring the syndrome of spatial unilateral neglect through an illusion of length.

Both a neuropsychological syndrome (unilateral spatial neglect) and a visual illusion of length (the Brentano version of the Müller-Lyer illusion) bring about a misjudgement of the subjective centre of a horizontal line, with a unilateral shift. In experiment 1 we investigated, in patients with left unilateral neglect, illusory effects of horizontal length, with the aim of exploring the functional and neural basis of horizontal space perception, and the role of visual processing in shaping the patients' bisection performance. Fourteen right-brain-damaged patients with left spatial unilateral n

[Room tilt illusion: Report of two cases and terminological review].

The room tilt illusion is a transient misperception of the visual image as tilted on its side or even upside down; in this case it has been termed acute upside down reversal of vision. We report on two cases of room tilt illusion as manifestation of VIII nerve neuritis (herpes-zoster infection) and cerebellar hemorrhage. Room tilt illusion has been reported in association with vertebrobasilar stroke, migraine, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and labyrinthine disorders. The pathophysiology of this rare visual illusion has been related to a lesion of the visual or vestibulo-otolith pathways. In ani

[Metastasectomy--a direct therapeutic effect or an illusion due to patient selection?].

Metastasectomy is widely practiced in surgical oncology. Well established examples are the resection of liver metastases in patients with colo-rectal cancer, wedge resections of lung metastases in sarcoma, or the surgical removal of solitary brain metastases derived from solid tumours. The latter example has been tested in randomised phase III trials and found to be an effective mode of treatment compared with radiation therapy alone. In the other fields no such trials are available, and data chiefly stem from retro- and prospective phase II trials. For a variety of reasons, phase II studies a

Illusion of control for self and others in depressed and nondepressed college students.

Recently, it has been discovered that depressed people are less likely than nondepressed people to succumb to an "illusion of control" and judge that their actions influence outcomes that are objectively uncontrollable. This experiment examined the relationship between depression and susceptibility to the illusion of control for oneself and for others. Depressed and nondepressed college students were asked to judge either how much control they themselves had or how much control a male or female confederate had over a noncontingent, but positive, outcome. Replicating past findings on depression

Activation of the inner critic increases speech illusions and negative emotional valence of perceived speech.

OBJECTIVES: Research consistently reports an association between auditory hallucinations and traumatic experiences, yet the psychological mechanisms underpinning this relationship remain poorly understood. Empirical evidence suggests that enduring dispositions, including early maladaptive schemas, interact with immediate stressors to elicit auditory hallucinations. The inner critic represents the activation of such enduring dispositions and concurs with common themes in auditory hallucinations. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the inner critic on speech illusions and the emotional
