Skin test as herd diagnosis for Aujeszky's disease (pseudorabies) in swine.

The value of a skin test for the diagnosis of Aujeszky's disease (pseudorabies) in swine was examined. Semipurified and concentrated antigens, obtained by ether/tween 80 inactivation of Aujeszky's disease virus, were inoculated intradermally into seronegative, experimentally infected and vaccinated swine and into pigs with maternal antibodies. A specific skin reaction, characterized by a visible indurated swelling, was observed within 24 hours in animals with active immunity. No reaction was seen in pigs with maternal immunity or in seronegative uninfected and unvaccinated animals. In the infe

Immunological response of the rat to infection with Taenia taeniaeformis. VI. The role of immediate hypersensitivity in resistance to reinfection.

Chemical inhibitors of immediate hypersensitivity were used to treat rats passively immunized against Taenia taeniaeformis with serum containing 7Sγ2a and reaginic antibodies. There was no significant reduction in protection against oral challenge with eggs in these animals, indicating that reagin-mediated hypersensitivity reactions were not an essential component of the protective mechanism. However, systemic reagin sensitization was shown to result in an acceleration of the rate at which challenge organisms were destroyed in immune rats. By 12 h after infection most of the parasites had been

Development of vaccine-induced immunity against TRT in turkeys depends remarkably on the level of maternal antibodies and the age of birds on the day of vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Avian Metapneumovirus (aMPV) infections are a huge economical issue for the poultry industry worldwide. Although maternal antibodies do not protect turkey poults against turkey rhinotracheitis (TRT), almost no studies have been conducted so far regarding the impact of these antibodies on vaccine induced immunity development against aMPV infection. We conducted four experiments on commercial turkeys aimed at comparing local humoral and cell mediated immune response of maternally delivered anti-aMPV antibody positive (MDA+; Experiment I and II) and negative (MDA-; Experiment III and

Attempts to transfer immunity to Trichobilharzia ocellata (Trematoda: Schistosomatidae) passively via lymphoid cells and/or serum.

White Pekin ducklings were injected with serum, lymphoid cells, or both, derived from donor birds which were immune to reinfection by the schistosome trematode, Trichobilharzia ocellata. Ducklings receiving serum and/or cells from susceptible birds, and untreated ducklings, served as controls. One set of experimental and control ducklings was kept alive and all of these birds passed viable T. ocellata eggs by day 20 indicating that protective immunity had not been transferred. Another set was killed 3-5 days after exposure. The schistosomula which were recovered from these were measured and in

Immune processes in the course of infection with dysentery bacilli. I. Transfer of immunity by means of spleen cells.

Studies on the mechanisms of immune phenomena in the course of infections with dysentery bacilli in mice showed that injection of live Shigella sonnei phase I bacilli intravenously evokes the appearance in the spleen of cells by means of which immunity to a lethal dose of these microorganisms can be transferred into other mice. Immunity to a lethal dose of the bacteria was measured by the number of animals surviving the infection, and by the numbers of bacteria isolated from the organs of the animals. "Active" cells appeared in the spleen 4-8 days after immunization. Spleen cells obtained from

Immunological control of macrophage proliferation in vivo.

The transfer of cell-mediated anti-Listeria immunity to normal recipient mice with spleen cells from convalescing donors results in a striking increase in the replication of macrophages in the recipients' livers. Macrophage division occurs 24 h earlier and is 2 to 3 times more intense than macrophage division in mice combating infection with the aid of normal spleen cells. The spleen cells responsible for triggering increased macrophage division and for mediating immunity are destroyed by anti-theta serum and complement, thus showing that they are thymus derived lymphocytes. Their capacity to

Molecular and immunological developments in placentas.

Cytotrophoblasts differentiate in two directions during early placentation: syncytiotrophoblasts (STBs) and extravillous trophoblasts (EVTs). STBs face maternal immune cells in placentas, and EVTs, which invade the decidua and uterine myometrium, face the cells in the uterus. This situation, in which trophoblasts come into contact with maternal immune cells, is known as the maternal-fetal interface. Despite fetuses and fetus-derived trophoblast cells being of the semi-allogeneic conceptus, fetuses and placentas are not rejected by the maternal immune system because of maternal-fetal tolerance.

Innate immune responses to pathogens at the maternal-fetal interface.

During pregnancy, the maternal immune system must navigate a balance between fetal tolerance and a response to acquired microbial infections. Cells at the maternal-fetal interface coordinate this response throughout gestational stages in a dynamic manner, integrating endocrine, developmental, inflammatory and metabolic cues. Although many maternal and fetal cell types activate innate immune signalling pathways in response to infections, excessive inflammation can disrupt tolerance, affect placental function and impair fetal development, leading to congenital disease and other pregnancy complic

Bovine neonatal immunology.

The majority of early, in utero immune development occurs independent of antigen exposure. Only later during development can a fetus respond to antigens, and even then the response depends on the stage of fetal development and the nature of the antigen. At birth, the neonate is rapidly exposed to large numbers of potential pathogens. Although immunocompetent, the neonate is immunonaive and dependent on passively acquired maternal immunoglobulins, immune cells, and other substances from colostrum for protection. Neonates that suffer failure of passive transfer of maternal immunoglobulins may be

Transgenerational plasticity and antiviral immunity in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) against Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1).

The oyster's immune system is capable of adapting upon exposure to a pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) to have an enhanced secondary response against the same type of pathogen. This has been demonstrated using poly(I:C) to elicit an antiviral response in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) against Ostreid herpesvirus (OsHV-1). Improved survival following exposure to poly(I:C) has been found in later life stages (within-generational immune priming) and in the next generation (transgenerational immune priming). The mechanism that the oyster uses to transfer immunity to the next gen

[Alloimmune neonatal neutropenia in homozygotic female twins].

Female homozygous twins presented with alloimmune neonatal neutropenia due to a maternal neutrophil-specific anti-NA2 antibody. The disease is usually benign, but when accompanied by severe infection it may require exchange transfusion and transfusion of granulocytes free of the antigen involved in the immunological conflict. Owing to the risk of relapse in subsequent pregnancies, the haemogram of the following infants must be supervised.

Epidemiological assessment of malaria transmission in an endemic area of East Pakistan and the significance of congenital immunity.

A longitudinal epidemiological study was carried out in a hyperendemic malarious area of East Pakistan. Transmission of malaria was observed with two peaks, one in the premonsoon period, the other in the pre-winter period. New infections occurred in 51.7% of the infants surveyed who were 2 months old or under when first examined: there were frequent superinfections. The maternal immunity passively transferred to the infants did not play a significant role in restricting the development of the asexual erythrocytic stage or that of gametocytes, as indicated by the fact that the average parasite

Risk Factors for and Prevalence of Failure of Passive Transfer of Immunity in Calves on Dairy Farms in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Failure of passive transfer of immunity (FPTI) is perhaps the most important factor in the health of neonatal calves. Given the variation between countries in FPTI, national data need to be documented to add to the international database for future meta-analyses. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of and risk factors for FPTI in dairy herds in Türkiye. METHODS: Blood serum samples from 1026 calves in 76 dairy herds in 16 provinces of Türkiye were analysed using a digital Brix refractometer to assess FPTI, defined as a Brix value < 8.5%. Data on risk

Who's the Target: Mother or Baby?

Maternal immunization for prevention of morbidity and mortality of pregnant women and their neonates due to infectious diseases is ongoing worldwide. The complexity of vaccine research and development in this population is challenging. Not only do vaccines for pregnant women require evidence of immunogenicity, potency, stability, and limited reactogenicity, they must also provide efficacy in decreasing morbidity for the pregnant woman, her fetus, and the neonate, demonstrate safety or lack of evidence of harm, and offer benefit or potential benefit of vaccination during pregnancy. Since the 19

Transfer of maternal immunity to piglets is involved in early protection against Mycoplasma hyosynoviae infection.

Mycoplasma hyosynoviae causes arthritis in pigs older than 12 weeks. The role of colostrum in protection of piglets against M. hyosynoviae infection is not clear. Our objective was therefore to investigate whether transfer of maternal immunity to piglets was involved in early protection against the infection. Experimental infections were carried out in three groups of weaners receiving different levels of M. hyosynoviae-specific colostrum components; Group NC derived from Mycoplasma free sows and possessed no specific immunity to M. hyosynoviae. Group CAb pigs, siblings of the NC group, receiv
