Neural basis of individual differences in impulsivity: contributions of corticolimbic circuits for behavioral arousal and control.

The objective of the current study was to analyze the neural correlates of behavioral arousal and inhibitory control as they relate to individual differences in impulsivity via well-established functional MRI amygdala reactivity and prefrontal inhibitory control paradigms in healthy adult subjects. Impulsivity correlated positively with activity of the bilateral ventral amygdala, parahippocampal gyrus, dorsal anterior cingulate gyrus (BA 32), and bilateral caudate. Conversely, impulsivity correlated negatively with activity of the dorsal amygdala and ventral prefrontal cortex (BA 47). Together

The role of serotonin in impulsive and aggressive behaviors associated with epilepsy-like neuronal hyperexcitability in the amygdala.

Neuronal hyperexcitability in limbic areas, especially the amygdala, is a significant underlying mechanism associated with complex partial seizures (CPS). CPS may be comorbid with emotional disturbances, especially major mood disorders, anxiety, and aggression. Anticonvulsant medications such as phenytoin are also mood-stabilizing, and have been used for treatment of behavioral dyscontrol in impulsive aggressive individuals. Because the amygdala has important functional roles in epilepsy, emotion, and behavioral control, there may be common biological mechanisms involving neuronal excitability

Effects of gender and family history of alcohol dependence on a behavioral task of impulsivity in healthy subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Substance misusers are often considered impulsive, but it is unclear whether impulsivity precedes substance misuse or develops as a consequence of it. Because alcohol dependence has a clear familial component, a study comparing impulsivity in nonaffected individuals who differ with respect to paternal history of alcohol dependence may provide evidence of familial vulnerability to impulsivity. METHOD: 122 healthy individuals participated, none of whom misused alcohol or drugs; 58 were paternal history positive (PHP) and 64 were paternal history negative (PHN) for alcohol dependence.

The Role of Anterior Insular Parvalbumin GABAergic Interneurons in Impulsivity-Related and Alcohol-Seeking Behaviors.

Adolescent impulsivity is linked to increased alcohol seeking and altered activation of anterior insular PV interneurons. Chemogenetic modulation of these neurons regulates inhibitory control and alcohol-related behaviors, highlighting their role in vulnerability to alcohol use disorder.

Reflexive eye movement alterations are related to subclinical impulsive-compulsive behaviors in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Subclinical impulsive-compulsive behaviors (s-ICBs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) are common, clinically relevant, and frequently underdiagnosed. Objective behavioral measures reflecting vulnerability to impulsive-compulsive behavior are lacking. We investigated whether oculomotor measures of inhibitory control are associated with s-ICBs in dopaminergically treated PD patients without clinically manifest impulse control disorders. METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with PD (Hoehn and Yahr stages 1-2) and twenty age-matched healthy controls completed prosaccade and antisaccade eye-track

Vitamin D Status and Behavioral Impulsivity in Anorexia Nervosa: Insights from a Longitudinal Study.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe psychiatric disorder marked by extreme weight control behaviors and significant impacts on physical and psychosocial health. This study explores the relationship between vitamin D (Vit-D) levels and impulsivity in women with AN. Forty-six cisgender White women participants were assessed upon admission and before discharge from a specialized eating disorder treatment center, with an average duration of 2.5 ± 0.10 months. Methods included self-reported questionnaires and behavioral tasks to measure impulsivity, alongside serum Vit-D levels. Our results showed si

Behavioral mechanisms of oxycodone's effects in female and male rats: Reinforcement delay and impulsive choice.

μ-Opioid agonists (e.g., morphine) typically increase impulsive choice, which has been interpreted as an opioid-induced increase in sensitivity to reinforcement delay. Relatively little research has been done with opioids other than morphine (e.g., oxycodone), or on sex differences in opioid effects, on impulsive choice. The present study investigated the effects of acute (0.1-1.0 mg/kg) and chronic (1.0 mg/kg twice/day) administration of oxycodone on choice controlled by reinforcement delay, a primary mechanism implicated in impulsive choice, in female and male rats. Rats responded under a co

Neural correlates of impulse control behaviors in Parkinson's disease: Analysis of multimodal imaging data.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control behaviors (ICB) are frequently observed in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and are characterized by compulsive and repetitive behavior resulting from the inability to resist internal drives. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed to provide a better understanding of structural and functional brain alterations and clinical parameters related to ICB in PD patients. METHODS: We utilized a dataset from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative including 36 patients with ICB (PDICB+) compared to 76 without ICB (PDICB-) and 61 healthy controls (HC). Using multi

Do Poor Diet and Lifestyle Behaviors Modify the Genetic Susceptibility to Impulsivity in the General Population?

The present study investigated whether an unhealthy diet and other lifestyle behaviors may modify the genetic susceptibility to impulsivity. A total of 33,047 participants (mean age = 42.1 years, 59.8% females) from the Dutch Lifelines cohort were included. Each diet index and other lifestyle behaviors were tested for their interactions on the effect on the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) polygenic risk score (PRS) on impulsivity using a linear regression model with adjustment for covariates. The ADHD PRS was significantly associated with impulsivity (B = 0.03 (95% CI: 0.02, 0.

Suicide behavior is associated with childhood emotion dysregulation but not trait impulsivity in first episode psychosis.

Historically, research on suicide behavior has not included those experiencing first episode psychosis (FEP), hindering prevention efforts for this population. Emotion dysregulation and impulsivity represent two mechanisms that contribute to suicide, but these have not been examined in FEP. We hypothesize that the combination of trait impulsivity and childhood emotion dysregulation are associated with suicide behavior (SB) and ideation (SI) in those experiencing FEP. Participants were recruited from an Early Psychosis Program (N=80, ages 12-32, 65% male). Clinician ratings of symptoms and hist

The role of depression and anxiety in impulsive and obsessive-compulsive behaviors among anorexic and bulimic patients.

Eating disorders are believed to range across a spectrum of varying degrees of obsessive-compulsive and impulsive behavior. Sixty anorexic (mean age = 19.8; sd = 5.9) and 109 bulimic (mean age = 26.9; sd = 11.3) female patients completed self-report questionnaires assessing obsessive-compulsiveness, impulsivity, depression and anxiety, as well as two eating disorder scales. Results yielded significantly higher levels of impulsivity and negative body image in the bulimic compared to the anorexic group. Regression analysis predicting impulsivity showed that bulimia and negative body image were t…
