Predictors of Individual and Interpersonal Adjustment Among Non-offending Partners of Individuals With Histories of Sexual Offenses.

Recent research indicates that the consequences of sexual offenses extend beyond target victims, including to non-offending partners of individuals with sexual offense histories. However, little research has focused on non-offending partners' wellbeing and relationships with persons with sexual offense histories leading up to and following acts of sexual aggression. Non-offending partners may be secondary victims of their partners' offenses in managing psychological difficulties (e.g., guilt, shame), social stigma and isolation, fear for their safety, or difficulties in their romantic relation

Republication of The Technology-Related Assistance to Individuals with Disabilities Act: Relevance to Individuals with Learning Disabilities and Their Advocates.

Assistive technology (AT) was recognized by Congress as a viable need for people with disabilities when it passed the Tech Act in 1988. The legislation, which was reauthorized in 1994, has resulted in numerous programs and services that have helped people with disabilities access and use AT devices. The Tech Act's implications for people with learning disabilities is discussed in this article.

The effect of learning an individualized song on autobiographical memory recall in individuals with Alzheimer's disease: A pilot study.

Numerous neuropsychological studies have investigated the effect of music on patients with Alzheimer's disease. Findings suggest that music can improve behavioral symptoms, but its potential effects on cognitive abilities of patients still require more investigation. In this 2 × 2 crossover study, we measured the impact of learning an individualized song on autobiographical memory recall and other cognitive abilities in 12 patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. For each patient, one favorite song of the patient and one autobiographical memory with positive valence were associated

Individuals with migraine have a different dry eye symptom profile than individuals without migraine.

BACKGROUND: Many individuals with migraine report symptoms of dry eye (DE). However, it is not known whether DE profiles are similar between individuals with and without migraine. To bridge this gap, we evaluated symptoms and signs of DE, including symptoms suggestive of nerve dysfunction, in a large group of individuals with DE symptoms, and compared profiles between individuals with migraine and those without migraine or headache. METHODS: Prospective cross-sectional study of individuals with DE symptoms seen at the Miami VA. RESULTS: Of 250 individuals, 31 met International Classification

Eye movements enhance memory for individuals who are strongly right-handed and harm it for individuals who are not.

Subjects who make repetitive saccadic eye movements before a memory test subsequently exhibit superior retrieval in comparison with subjects who do not move their eyes. It has been proposed that eye movements enhance retrieval by increasing interaction of the left and right cerebral hemispheres. To test this, we compared the effect of eye movements on subsequent recall (Experiment 1) and recognition (Experiment 2) in two groups thought to differ in baseline degree of hemispheric interaction-individuals who are strongly right-handed (SR) and individuals who are not (nSR). For SR subjects, who n

Individual differences in estrogen receptor alpha in select brain nuclei are associated with individual differences in aggression.

Steroid hormones play an important role in modulating social behavior in many species. Estrogens are thought to act on an interconnected network of hypothalamic and limbic brain areas to affect aggressive behavior, although the specific nuclei unknown remain unspecified. We show that individual variation in estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha) immunoreactivity in the lateral septum (LS), ventral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (vBNST), and anterior hypothalamus (AHA) of CD-1 mice is positively correlated with aggressive behavior. When males were treated with fadrozole (an aromatase inhibitor)

Surprisal from Large Language Models as an individual difference: Capturing the individual regardless of the text answer.

Surprisal is a measure from information theory that quantifies how unexpected an event is within the context of a particular system. In Large Language Models, higher surprisal of particular words indicates lower predictability or greater difficulty for cognitive processing. In language production, surprisal can be understood as a quantification of individual choices plus other produced linguistic characteristics such as selected content. Thus, this measure could be a quantifiable characteristic of how individuals produce their discourse and its predictability. However, it is not clear whether

Visual Word Form Area demonstrates individual and task-agnostic consistency but inter-individual variability.

Ventral Occipital Temporal Cortex (VOTC) contains a mosaic of categorically-selective functional regions that respond to visual stimuli. Within left VOTC lies the Visual Word Form Area (VWFA) - a text-selective region that develops as individuals learn to read. While there is consistency in the general location of text-selective responses - within the posterior occipitotemporal sulcus (OTS) - there is substantial variability across individuals in the size and precise anatomical location. Moreover, debate continues regarding whether VWFA a) encodes the visual features of text, versus b) is driv

On the need of individually optimizing temporal interference stimulation of human brains due to inter-individual variability.

INTRODUCTION: Transcranial temporal interference stimulation (TI, TIS, or tTIS), also known as interferential stimulation (IFS), is able to focally stimulate deep brain regions, provided it is properly optimized. We previously presented an algorithm for optimizing TI using two arrays of electrodes and showed that it can achieve more focal stimulation compared to optimized high-definition transcranial electrical stimulation (HD-TES) and conventional optimized TI using two pairs of electrodes, especially in the deep brain areas such as the hippocampus. However, those modeling studies were only p

Investigation of Individual Variability and Temporal Fluctuations in Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) Levels in Healthy Individuals.

Measurement of nitric oxide (NO) concentration in exhaled breath (FeNO) is a quantitative, non-invasive, simple, and safe method for assessing airway inflammation. It serves as a complementary tool to other methods for evaluating airway diseases. However, little is known about the typical NO levels in healthy individuals, including individual differences and the influence of measurement timing. Therefore, this study classified measurement times into four periods and statistically analyzed NO levels in healthy individuals. The mean values among groups were compared using repeated measures ANOVA

Unsupervised Cluster Analysis of Walking Activity Data for Healthy Individuals and Individuals with Lower Limb Amputation.

This is the first investigation to perform an unsupervised cluster analysis of activities performed by individuals with lower limb amputation (ILLAs) and individuals without gait impairment, in free-living conditions. Eight individuals with no gait impairments and four ILLAs wore a thigh-based accelerometer and walked on an improvised route across a variety of terrains in the vicinity of their homes. Their physical activity data were clustered to extract 'unique' groupings in a low-dimension feature space in an unsupervised learning approach, and an algorithm was created to automatically disti

Monkeypox virus-infected individuals mount comparable humoral immune responses as Smallpox-vaccinated individuals.

In early 2022, a cluster of monkeypox virus (MPXV) infection (mpox) cases were identified within the UK with no prior travel history to MPXV-endemic regions. Subsequently, case numbers exceeding 80,000 were reported worldwide, primarily affecting gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Public health agencies worldwide have offered the IMVANEX Smallpox vaccination to these individuals at high-risk to provide protection and limit the spread of MPXV. We have developed a comprehensive array of ELISAs to study poxvirus-induced antibodies, utilising 24 MPXV and 3 Vaccinia virus (

Inter-individual Variability in Activity of the Major Drug Metabolizing Enzymes in Liver Homogenates of 20 Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Inter-individual variability in hepatic drug metabolizing enzyme (DME) activity is a major contributor to heterogeneity in drug clearance and safety. Accurate data on expression levels and activities of DMEs is an important prerequisite for in vitro-in vivo extrapolation and in silico based predictions. Characterization and assessment of inter-correlations of the major DMEs cytochrome P450s (CYPs) and UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) have been extensively documented, but simultaneous quantification including other major DMEs has been lacking. OBJECTIVE: Assessment of inter-dono

Study on dermatoses and their prevalence in groups of confirmed alcoholic individuals in comparison to a non-alcoholic group of individuals.

BACKGROUND: The direct relationship between alcoholism and dermatoses has been evaluated in recent researches. However, there are few objective surveys that demonstrate and prove a direct relationship between alcohol and a specific dermatosis. OBJECTIVES: to verify the prevalence of dermatoses in alcoholics, analize the dermatological changes found in these patients and their evolution during alcoholic abstinence. Also, to compare the results obtained with a non-alcoholic control group and with the data found in medical literature. METHODS: the dermatologic conditions of 278 alcoholic patien

Examining within-person variability of each individual: How should we deal with non-varying individuals?

Researchers have witnessed a rapid increase in attention to within-person dynamic processes. However, individuals with observed zero within-person variability (i.e., non-varying individuals) remain understudied. This study investigates how non-varying individuals affect the estimation of within-person dynamic processes and offers practical recommendations. A motivating example of daily stressors demonstrates that including non-varying individuals can change substantive conclusions for univariate autoregressive models. Two simulation studies further explored how different proportions of non-var

Individualized task difficulty promotes balance training outcomes and self-efficacy in individuals with lower limb loss.

An ideal motor skill learning typically features adaptive task difficulty to facilitate training outcomes and avoid frustration, yet this concept has not been explored in balance training for individuals with diminished postural control including lower limb loss. The purposes of this study were (1) to examine a novel stabilometer-based task with individualized difficulty levels as a balance training protocol and (2) to compare the task performance and self-efficacy between participants receiving the training with and without individualized task difficulty. Ten older adults and 10 individuals w
