This article discusses the impact of environmental factors on birth outcomes during the last two decades. It reiterates the correlation between air pollutants and adverse pregnancy including low birth weight (LBW) and infant mortality. Data sets are assembled for many OECD countries consisting of yearly air pollutants emissions including sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds. Various health data are illustrated to suggest that countries with high emission levels of air pollutants seemed to increase with LBW and infant mortality. This article reports …

OBJECTIVE: Analyze the spatial and temporal distribution of infant mortality by anencephaly in Argentina in relation with folic acid fortification phases.
POPULATION AND METHODS: Data came from certificates of live births and deaths in children under 1 year, for the 1998-2007 period (Argentine Ministry of Health). The infant mortality rate attributable to anencephaly for Argentina, geographical regions, provinces and departments were estimated according to the different phases of mandatory fortification with folic acid. Secular trend of infant mortality rate attributable to anencephaly and de…

The perinatal periods of risk (PPOR) methodology provides an easy-to-use analytical approach to infant mortality that helps focus community initiatives for improving maternal and infant health. Because few analyses have been published, many public health practitioners may be unfamiliar with PPOR. This article demonstrates the application of PPOR analysis using infant mortality in Jackson County, Missouri. While the PPOR consists of two phases, this analysis was restricted to the initial phase of the overall process. The second phase builds on the initial findings and prioritizes the contributi…

Community information based on causes and circumstances of death in infants and young children in Malawi was obtained in a prospective cohor … of death. In this area of rural sub-Saharan Africa, neonatal mortality contributes substantially to infant mortality, and prematurity is considered to be an important component of early neonatal deaths; infectious disease syndromes predominate in the postneonatal and second year of life. Strategies to reduce infant deaths in sub-Saharan Africa must consider these …

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether periodic variations in annual infant mortality were associated with malnutrition and the poor quality of the food supply available to the community.
DESIGN: Retrospective study of historical epidemiology of infant mortality by time series analysis and family reconstitution of parish registers of burials and baptisms.
SETTING: Penrith, Cumbria, England, 1557-1812.
SUBJECTS: A total of 17,500 births during 1557-1812.
RESULTS: This community in the Eden Valley, Cumbria, close to the Scottish borders, was living under marginal conditions with high mortality and lo…

Infant death certificates were linked with birth certificates for infants born to residents of Tohoku, Tokai and Kyushu regions in 1989 (n = 409, 679, or about one-third of all births in Japan), to examine the effects of variables, as reported on birth certificates, on cause-specific infant mortality. "Certain conditions originating in the perinatal period" and "congenital anomalies" accounted for nearly 90 percent of neonatal deaths, while "congenital anomalies", "injuries and poisoning" and "sudden infant death" were responsible for about 65 percent of postneonatal deaths. Mortality rates fo…

Neither the infant nor the under 24 hours mortality rates in Norway improved in the 1980s. The late neonatal mortality rate did not improve significantly in either the 1980s or the 1970s. The postneonatal mortality rate rose steadily throughout the last 15 years. The major mortality declines for all age groups took place in the 1970s. In the 1980s, only the 1-7-day mortality improved significantly. As a result, Norway fell behind in the international ranking of perinatal and infant mortality. Disparities among the perinatal mortality rates of Norwegian counties diminished throughout the 1970s.…

The United States Linked Birth/Infant Death Data Sets: 1983 and 1984 Birth Cohorts from the National Center for Health Statistics were used to identify maternal and infant characteristics related to twin infant mortality; 41,554 white and 10,062 black live-born matched twin pairs were evaluated. Twin birth weight distribution was skewed with 48% of white and 63% of black twins born weighing less than 2500 gm. Overall infant mortality rates were 47.1 and 79.3 deaths per 1000 live births for white and black twins, respectively (five times the rates for singletons). Three fourths of deaths were a…

The recent slowdown in the decline of infant mortality in the United States and the continued high risk of death among black infants (twice that of white infants) prompted a consortium of Public Health Service agencies to collaborate with all States in the development of a national data base from linked birth and infant death certificates. This National Infant Mortality Surveillance (NIMS) project for the 1980 U.S. birth cohort provides neonatal, postneonatal, and infant mortality risks for blacks, whites, and all races in 12 categories of birth weights. (Note: Neonatal mortality risk = number…

OBJECTIVE: Sepsis is a major cause of mortality among children, with the highest burden evident in neonates and young infants, particularly, in resource-constrained healthcare settings. Despite this burden, there are insufficient published data to delineate the epidemiology of neonatal sepsis from many of these settings. We aimed to address this research gap by evaluating the epidemiology of sepsis in neonates and young infants in Sri Lanka, a populous country in Southeast Asia, and to evaluate the efficacy of currently-recommended empiric antibiotic regimens to treat these infections in the c

AIM: To explore trends and main causes of infant mortality in Norwegian live-born infants (LBIs) from 2009 through 2020 and assess how trends differ by gestational age (GA).
METHODS: Population-based cohort study of infant deaths using data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway and the Norwegian Cause of Death Registry.
RESULTS: The study population consisted of 676 931 LBIs (48.6% female), of which 1583 (2.3 per 1000 LBIs) died in infancy (43% female). There was a linear decline in the infant mortality from 2.9 to 1.7 per 1000 LBIs (p < 0.001). Age of death remained stable; 70% occurred…

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women with intellectual disability (ID) may have greater levels of comorbidity and decreased care access, social support, or ability to monitor their status and communicate needs, but few studies have examined their pregnancy course and outcome, and little is known about their longer-term maternal and infant health.
OBJECTIVE: We compared pre-pregnancy characteristics, pregnancy outcomes, and rehospitalization <2 years after delivery among women with and without ID.
METHOD: We identified all women with ID and randomly selected a 10:1 comparison group of women without ID

INTRODUCTION: Given its location on the Andes, the Northwest region of Argentina is geographically, socioeconomically, culturally, and biologically heterogeneous, and this is reflected on an infant mortality rate (IMR) that is higher than in any other Argentine region.
OBJETIVE: To estimate IMR, neonatal mortality rate (NMR), and post-neonatal mortality rate (PNMR), and to analyze their spatial and temporal variations using secular trends and the relative risk based on altitudinal zones.
POPULATION AND METHOD: This was a retrospective, descriptive, correlational study based on birth and deat…

Background Infant mortality is an important health indicator that estimates population well-being. Infant mortality has declined globally but is still a major public health challenge. This article provides the characteristics, causes, burden, and trends of infant mortality in Qatar. Methods Frequencies, percentages, and rates were calculated using data from birth-death registries over 2004-2014 to describe infant mortality by nationality, gender, and age group. We calculated the relative risks of the top causes of infant mortality among subgroups according to the 10th Revision of the Internati…

The paper estimates the effect of SO2 pollution on infant mortality in Germany, 1985-2003. To avoid endogeneity problems, I exploit the natural experiment created by the mandated desulfurization at power plants and power plants' location and prevailing wind directions, which together determine treatment intensity for counties. Estimates translate into an elasticity of 0.07-0.13 and the observed reduction in pollution implies an annual gain of 826-1460 infant lives. There is no evidence for disproportionate effects on neonatal mortality, but for an increase in the number of infants with compara…

OBJECTIVE: Infant mortality rates (IMR) and neonatal mortality rates (NMR) in the United States have not decreased recently. The purpose of this study was to determine the contributions of birth weight and gestational age subgroups to the IMR and NMR in the United States.
METHODS: We used the most recent (1983-2005) US linked birth and infant death data and simple regression analysis to determine the contributions of specific birth weight and gestational age subgroups to trends in IMR and NMR.
RESULTS: IMR and NMR decreased between 1983 and 2005 for all birth weight and gestational age subgr…
