Date palm, Phoenix dactylifera L. (Arecaceae), grows commonly in the Arabian Peninsula and is traditionally used to treat various diseases. The aim of the present study was to identify chemical composition of the essential oil and to investigate the repellent activity. The essential oil of P. dactylifera was obtained by hydrodistillation from the spathe, a specialized leaf structure that surrounds the pollinating organs of the palm. The oil was subsequently analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. The oil showed promising repellent activity against yellow fever mosquito - Aedes aegypti. Sixteen component

Essential oil extracts from Callicarpa americana and Callicarpa japonica were investigated. Bioassay-guided fractionation of C. americana extracts using the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, led to the isolation of alpha-humulene, humulene epoxide II, and intermedeol and a newly isolated terpenoid (callicarpenal). Similar work involving C. japonica resulted in the isolation of an additional compound, spathulenol, as well as the four compounds isolated from C. americana. Structure elucidation was performed on all isolated compounds using a combination of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) is the vector of Leishmania chagasi the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in South and Central America, particularly Brazil, where the greatest incidence occurs. The disease is fatal if untreated. Although huge efforts have been made to control VL the incidence is increasing. Vector control remains an important element of disease control but residual spraying and other strategies have failed to make any lasting impact. Manipulation of sandfly chemical communication offers the opportunity to add new techniques and tools to reduce sandfly

The granulate ambrosia beetle, Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky), and the black stem borer, Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) are important pests in ornamental nurseries in the eastern USA. These beetles are managed mainly using preventative trunk applications of pyrethroids, such as permethrin or bifenthrin when females typically fly out of woodlots and attack young trees in the spring. Verbenone and methyl salicylate are potential phytochemicals reported as repellants but not completely validated in ornamental nurseries for ambrosia beetle management as an alternative option. Thus, this

There is increasing interest in the development of effective mosquito repellents of natural origin to reduce transmission of diseases such as malaria and yellow fever. To achieve this we have employed an in vitro competition assay involving odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) of the malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae, with a predominantly female expression bias to identify plant essential oils (EOs) containing bioactive compounds that target mosquito olfactory function. EOs and their fractions capable of binding to such OBPs displayed repellence against female mosquitoes in a laboratory repellent

Spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, is a globally invasive pest of soft-skinned fruit. Females oviposit into ripening fruit and larvae cause direct destruction of tissues. As many plant essential oils are permitted food additives, they may provide a safe means of protecting fruit from D. suzukii infestation in both conventional and organic production systems. Twelve oils and potassium metabisulfite (KMS) were screened in the laboratory as repellents for D. suzukii flies. Most essential oils deterred D. suzukii flies from cotton wicks containing attractive raspberry juice. Peppermint o

The common bed bug (Cimex lectularius L.) is an obligate blood-feeding insect that spreads easily through human activity. Catnip (Nepeta cataria L.) oil has emerged as a promising natural repellent for bed bugs, but previous studies have been limited to laboratory conditions. In this study, we assessed the effectiveness of a catnip-based formulation (20% catnip CCC oil: 10% catnip oil cultivar CR9, 5% carvacrol, 5% citronellol) applied to fabric against bed bugs using simulated field tests, a human finger stimulus test, and field trials. N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) was included as a benchm

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mostly non-lethal disease in humans transmitted by mosquitoes or humans that can produce severe brain defects such as microcephaly in babies and Guillain-Barré syndrome in elderly adults. The use of optimal control strategies involving information campaigns about insect repellents and condoms alongside an available safe and effective vaccine can prevent the number of infected humans with ZIKV. A system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations is formulated for the transmission dynamics of ZIKV in the presence of three control strategies to evaluate the impact of vari…

In the Americas, Lutzomyia longipalpis is the most relevant sand fly species for the transmission of visceral leishmaniasis. For its vector control in Brazil, insecticide spraying has not shown persistent reduction in disease prevalence while some sand fly populations are reported resistant to the insecticides used in spraying. The usage of repellents and personal protection behavior can reduce vector borne diseases prevalence. Therefore, the search for new repellent compounds is needed to use together with insecticide spraying, especially from natural sources to overcome the resistance develo

BACKGROUND: Spatial repellent products are used for prevention of insect bites, and a body of evidence exists on spatial repellent entomological efficacy. A new option for vector control, spatial repellent products are designed to release active ingredient into the air for disruption of human-vector contact thereby reducing human exposure to mosquito-borne pathogens. Clinical trials have shown spatial repellent epidemiological efficacy against Aedes-borne viruses but inconclusive outcomes against malaria. We aimed to show and quantify the protective efficacy of spatial repellents in reducing m

The dichloromethane-methanol extract, the essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation from Nepeta parnassica, and the isolated 4aα,7α,7aβ-nepetalactone were evaluated for their repellent effect against the mosquitoes Aedes (Stegomyia) cretinus Edwards and Culex pipiens pipiens biotype molestus Forskål. The chemical analysis of N. parnassica essential oil, dominated by oxygenated monoterpenes (87 %), revealed 4aα,7α,7aβ-nepetalactone (36.8%), 1,8-cineole (25.5%), and 4aα,7β,7aβ-nepetalactone (11.1%) as the major constituents. The results of the insect bioassays showed that the essential oil and

In the recent years, growing concern about the potential toxicity of synthetic repellents has led to the development of environmentally safe non-toxic insect control methods. Present investigation explores the toxicological impacts of ethyl anthranilate-loaded mosquito repellent patch (EAMRP) on respiratory system following acute and sub-chronic inhalation exposure in Wistar rats. Lungs parameters such as enhanced pause, tidal volume, respiration rate, inspiration time, and expiration time were determined using whole body plethysmograph. Mosquitoes threaten over half of the world's population through vectored diseases such as malaria, zika, yellow fever, dengue, and chikungunya. Mosquitoes have a highly developed olfactory system attuned to chemotaxis relating to host-seeking, mating, and oviposition behavior. In this study, we aimed to determine the spatial efficacy of 2 plant-based repellent blends (Blend3 and Blend4 that had previously been found to successfully repel Aedes, Anopheles and Culex mosquitoes in wind tunnel assays) in excluding Aedes aegypti from the window entry. A new cage system was developed for parallel "n

Ixodes ricinus and Hyalomma excavatum are two widely dispersed vectors of pathogens, including those that cause Lyme disease and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in the human population. Recently developed, plant-derived, mosquito-repellent blends have shown promise against other vector clades, and this study assesses these blends as potential tick repellents. Blends of (+)-borneol, bornyl acetate, eugenol, isoeugenol and camphor were assessed in two formats: blends 3 and 4. Ticks were assessed using the moving object bioassay (Ixodes) or a dual-choice behavioural assay (Hyalomma). Both blends

Mosquitoes are vectors for a variety of infectious illnesses, and chemical synthetic insecticides have made it possible to control them effectively. Mosquito repellents are a typical means of keeping mosquitos at bay. Because of its main effectiveness of skin permeability, N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) is one of the most extensively used mosquito repellents but a dangerous synthetic chemical. DEET was identified about a decade ago to inhibit mosquito's Odorant Binding Protein 1 (OBP1), impairing the mosquito's ability to recognise the host body odour. OBP1 has been identified as a possible
