Multimodal platform for ITN efficacy: Surface chemistry, bioavailability, and mosquito behavior.

Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are crucial for malaria control, but their efficacy is compromised by rising mosquito resistance. To better understand ITN effectiveness, we present a multidisciplinary framework through a case study examining the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from ITN coatings and its impact on malaria vectors in East and West Africa. Our results show that PFAS-free pyrethroid nets exhibit reduced bio-efficacy against resistant malaria vectors compared with PFAS-based nets, despite both meeting deltamethrin specifications. Surface characterization reveal

Reductions in malaria cases after deployment of dual-active ingredient insecticide-treated nets in Ghana-a Bayesian interrupted time series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) represent a key tool in reducing human vector contact for malaria control. However, increasing insecticide resistance of malaria vectors threatens the effectiveness of pyrethroid-only nets in reducing malaria risk. Next-generation nets, such as those with dual-active ingredients, have been recommended for use in areas with high malaria burden and confirmed pyrethroid resistance. Here, we assessed the impact of the distribution of Interceptor® G2 (IG2) ITNs on malaria cases in the Western North Region of Ghana distributed in 2021. METHODS: We analyse

Efficacy of pyrethroid-pyriproxyfen and pyrethroid-chlorfenapyr nets on entomological indicators of malaria transmission: third year of a randomised controlled trial in Benin.

The present cluster-randomised control trial aims to assess the entomological efficacy of pyrethroid-pyriproxyfen and pyrethroid-chlorfenapyr LLINs compared to the standard pyrethroid-only LLINs, in their third year of community usage. Adult mosquito collections were performed every 3 months, in 4 randomly selected houses in each of the 60 trial clusters, using human landing catches. Adult mosquitoes were morphologically identified and Anopheles vectors were molecularly speciated and screened for the presence of the L1014F kdr mutation using PCR. Plasmodium falciparum sporozoite infection was

Bio-efficacy of deltamethrin based durable wall lining against wild populations of Anopheles gambiae s.l. in Northern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is one of the preferred tools used for control of malaria in many settings in the world. However, this control tool still faces challenges that include lack of long lasting active ingredient, limited number of well-trained personal, and need of repeated treatment which increases operational costs and reduces acceptability by residents. As a result there is need to develop and validate other methods which can complement the existing controls. The current study compared the bio-efficacy of durable wall lining (DL) (treated with deltamethrin 265 mg/m2) a

Molecular evidence for historical presence of knock-down resistance in Anopheles albimanus, a key malaria vector in Latin America.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles albimanus is a key malaria vector in the northern neotropics. Current vector control measures in the region are based on mass distributions of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and focal indoor residual spraying (IRS) with pyrethroids. Resistance to pyrethroid insecticides can be mediated by increased esterase and/or multi-function oxidase activity and/or mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel gene. The aim of this work was to characterize the homologous kdr region of the voltage-gated sodium channel gene in An. albimanus and to conduct a preliminary retrospec

Managing insecticide resistance in malaria vectors by combining carbamate-treated plastic wall sheeting and pyrethroid-treated bed nets.

BACKGROUND: Pyrethroid resistance is now widespread in Anopheles gambiae, the major vector for malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. This resistance may compromise malaria vector control strategies that are currently in use in endemic areas. In this context, a new tool for management of resistant mosquitoes based on the combination of a pyrethroid-treated bed net and carbamate-treated plastic sheeting was developed. METHODS: In the laboratory, the insecticidal activity and wash resistance of four carbamate-treated materials: a cotton/polyester blend, a polyvinyl chloride tarpaulin, a cotton/polyeste

Efficacy of ceiling-mounted mosquito nets for malaria vector control in a Peruvian Amazon riverine community: A stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial.

Malaria remains a major global health concern, especially in tropical regions such as the Peruvian Amazon. Installing ceiling-mounted mosquito nets in houses has been proposed as a strategy to reduce mosquito-human contact and, in turn, lower malaria transmission. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of ceiling-mounted mosquito nets in reducing Anopheles mosquito density in a high-transmission Amazonian setting. We conducted a stepped-wedge cluster-randomized trial from March to December 2024 in the Llanchama community of the San Juan Bautista district, Loreto, Peru. A total of 69 households w

New Strides in Prevention of Malaria during Pregnancy Present Multitudinous Opportunities.

Pregnant women are at a higher risk of developing complications from malaria, a mosquito-borne disease caused by Plasmodium parasites, resulting in considerable maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. Malaria in pregnancy causes unfavorable and life-threatening outcomes for both the mother and fetus not limited to maternal anemia, hypoglycaemia, cerebral malaria, pulmonary edema, and puerperal sepsis. WHO recommends wide-ranging strategies for this detrimental but preventable disease; however, numerous challenges persist in ensuring high uptake of preventive therapies, effective usage of

Spatial distribution of bednet coverage under routine distribution through the public health sector in a rural district in Kenya.

Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are one of the most important and cost-effective tools for malaria control. Maximizing individual and community benefit from ITNs requires high population-based coverage. Several mechanisms are used to distribute ITNs, including health facility-based targeted distribution to high-risk groups; community-based mass distribution; social marketing with or without private sector subsidies; and integrating ITN delivery with other public health interventions. The objective of this analysis is to describe bednet coverage in a district in western Kenya where the primary

High resolution physically based modelling reveals malaria incidence reduction by vector control measures.

Malaria continues to cause over 600,000 deaths annually in sub-Saharan Africa, disproportionately affecting children under five. Despite sustained control efforts, transmission remains highly sensitive to local environmental and climatic variability, underscoring the need for physically grounded models capable of capturing these dynamics. To address this challenge, we developed a high-resolution hybrid modeling framework linking WRF/WRF-Hydro and VECTRI. The framework integrates atmospheric, hydrological, ecological, and intervention processes at 1 km and 50 m resolutions and includes a new co

A practical approach for geographic prioritization and targeting of insecticide-treated net distribution campaigns during public health emergencies and in resource-limited settings.

BACKGROUND: The use of data in targeting malaria control efforts is essential for optimal use of resources. This work provides a practical mechanism for prioritizing geographic areas for insecticide-treated net (ITN) distribution campaigns in settings with limited resources. METHODS: A GIS-based weighted approach was adopted to categorize and rank administrative units based on data that can be applied in various country contexts where Plasmodium falciparum transmission is reported. Malaria intervention and risk factors were used to rank local government areas (LGAs) in Nigeria for prioritizat
