Neonicotinoid insecticides disrupt predation on the eggs of turf-infesting scarab beetles.

Turfgrass applications of imidacloprid were previously shown to suppress the abundance of certain soil arthropods. To ascertain whether those impacts harbor functional consequences, the effect of neonicotinoids on Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica Newman) predation was examined in three experiments that measured removal of eggs implanted into non-irrigated field plots. A first experiment confirmed that a single imidacloprid application reduced the abundance of nontarget fauna and the rate of egg removal. A second experiment compared the impacts of imidacloprid with those of three other neonic

Studies on relative toxicities of six insecticides on epigeic earthworm, Perionyx excavatus.

The 96 h LC(50) values of six insecticides were determined on a non-target epigeic earthworm Perionyx excavatus under laboratory conditions. Cypermethrin was found most toxic to P. excavatus (LC(50)-0.008 mg/kg), followed by endosulfan (LC(50)-0.03 mg/kg), carbaryl (LC(50)-6.07 mg/kg), chlorpyrifos (LC(50)-7.3 mg/kg), aldicarb (LC(50)-10.63 mg/kg) and monocrotophos (LC(50)-13.04 mg/kg). When these LC(50) values were compared with their respective recommended agricultural doses, aldicarb and carbaryl appeared more dangerous than other pesticides because of their lower LC(50) values than their r…

Control of bagworms (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) using contact and soil-applied systemic insecticides.

The current study evaluated the effect of different classes of insecticides against bagworms (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) on arborvitae by using a laboratory bioassay that allowed us to simultaneously evaluate the feeding rate, growth, and mortality of larvae. Soil application of the systemic insecticides dinotefuran and (to a lesser extent) chlothianidin increased larval mortality and reduced the feeding rate and growth of larvae, up to 50 d posttreatment. The effectiveness of systemic insecticides against bagworms makes them well suited to control bagworms on tall trees heavily infested in the u…

Control of phlebotomine sandflies in confined spaces using diffusible repellents and insecticides.

The control of phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae), the vectors of leishmaniasis, is directed mostly against adults as larvae develop in unknown or inaccessible habitats. In the current study we tested geraniol, a natural plant-derived product, as a space repellent and the synthetic pyrethroid prallethrin as a diffusible insecticide. Geraniol was dispersed in the air using diffusers with an electric fan and prallethrin was evaporated using electrically heated evaporators. Both substances were tested in inhabited bedrooms and in tents. Geraniol failed to effect significant reductions

Differences between organophosphorus insecticides in human self-poisoning: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Although more than 100 organophosphorus insecticides exist, organophosphorus poisoning is usually regarded as a single entity, distinguished only by the compound's lethal dose in animals. We aimed to determine whether the three most common organophosphorus insecticides used for self-poisoning in Sri Lanka differ in the clinical features and severity of poisoning they cause. METHODS: We prospectively studied 802 patients with chlorpyrifos, dimethoate, or fenthion self-poisoning admitted to three hospitals. Blood cholinesterase activity and insecticide concentration were measured to…

Adult population differences in response to six insecticides in Culex fuscocephala Theobald.

Adult bioassay was conducted in the laboratory on two populations of Culex fuscocephala, a vector of Japanese encephalitis (JE) in India, ag … yed for the experiments. JE outbreaks were reported from these places at different times. Among the insecticides used malathion in 5% concentration was found to be the most effective while, cyfluthrin (0.05%) and deltamethrin (0.025%) were very effective in much lesser concentration. For both propoxur (0.1%) and DDT (4.0%) the two populations of Cx. fuscocepha …

Evaluation of organophosphorus and synthetic pyrethroid insecticides against six vector mosquitoe species.

Three organophosphorus compounds- malathion, folithion and temephos- and two synthetic pyrethroids- alphamethrin and deltamethrin- were used for monitoring the susceptibility status of larvae and adults of six vector mosquito species: Culex quinquefasciatus (Filariasis) and Aedes albopictus (Dengue) (both laboratory and field strains); laboratory strains of Aedes aegypti (Dengue), Anopheles stephensi and Anopheles culicifacies (Malaria), and Culex tritaeniorhynchus (Japanese encephalitis) in India. From the LC50 values obtained for these insecticides, it was found that all mosquito species inc…

Effect of selected insecticides on rat brain synaptosomal adenylate cyclase and phosphodiesterase.

Previous reports from our laboratory and others clearly indicated that organochlorine insecticides such as chlordecone and DDT are potent inhibitors of ATPases involved in active ion transport. The present studies were initiated to study the effect of plictran, chlordecone, toxaphene, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, isodrin, and telodrin on enzymes involved in cyclic AMP metabolism. Rat brain synaptosomes were prepared by Ficoll-sucrose gradient centrifugation method. Adenylate cyclase activity, which is involved in anabolism of cAMP, was determined using the radioactive method by measuring [32P]cAM…

Effects of organic phosphate systemic insecticides on bovine embryonic survival and development.

Experiments were conducted to determine effects of 2 organic phosphate systemic insecticides on embryonic survival and possible teratogenesis in cattle. A total of 726 heifers at 3 locations were treated with either crufomate (4-tert-butyl-2-chlorophenyl methyl methylphos-phoramidate) or coumaphos (O,O-diethyl O-(3-chloro-4-methyl-2-oxo-2H-1-benzopyran-7-yl) phosphorothioate). The compounds were administered to pregnant bovine females at various stages of gestation by pouring along the dorsal midline. None of the treatments, including those at recommended one-time doses, one-time doses at doub…

Insecticidal peptides as sustainable tools for future agriculture.

The increasing global human population and the intensification of agriculture present unprecedented challenges for pest control. The escalating resistance of pests to conventional synthetic insecticides, coupled with ecological and health concerns, underscores the urgent need for innovative and sustainable management approaches. Insecticidal peptides, due to their structural diversity, molecular specificity, and biodegradability, are emerging as promising candidates for the development of next-generation bioinsecticides. This strategic roadmap synthesizes recent advances in peptide architectur…

Bioassay method for assessing insecticide susceptibility in thrips.

Thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) are sucking pests that damage a wide range of crops worldwide. Chemical insecticides are the main strategy for their control, but species can vary in susceptibility or develop resistance. Here, we developed and validated a bioassay method (dip test) using soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) leaf discs to evaluate the susceptibility of thrips to insecticides. We compared the susceptibility of Caliothrips phaseoli (Hood, 1912) to acephate and spinetoram assessed using this method with results of the IRAC Susceptibility Test Method 010, in which bean pod sections are…

Effects of Insecticide and Herbicides on Thyroid Disturbances in Zebrafish.

Thyroid cancer usually begins with thyroid dysfunction and nodules and has become the most common cancer globally, especially in women. Although the causes of thyroid dysfunction are complex, the presence of environmental pollutants, especially certain pesticides as established mutagens, has been widely accepted. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) have similar toxic reactions and signal transduction pathways to humans and are very similar to humans in physiology, development, and metabolic function. Here, the direct toxicity effects and mechanisms of different insecticides and herbicides on zebrafish thy…

Cuticular profiling of insecticide resistant Aedes aegypti.

Insecticides have made great strides in reducing the global burden of vector-borne disease. Nonetheless, serious public health concerns remain because insecticide-resistant vector populations continue to spread globally. To circumvent insecticide resistance, it is essential to understand all contributing mechanisms. Contact-based insecticides are absorbed through the insect cuticle, which is comprised mainly of chitin polysaccharides, cuticular proteins, hydrocarbons, and phenolic biopolymers sclerotin and melanin. Cuticle interface alterations can slow or prevent insecticide penetration in a …

Synthesis and insecticidal activities of novel solanidine derivatives.

BACKGROUND: Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is the fourth culture in the world and is widely used in the agri-food industries. They generate by-products in which α-chaconine and α-solanine, the two major solanidine-based glycoalkaloids of potato, are present. As secondary metabolites, they play an important role in the protection system of potato and are involved in plant protection against insects. To add value to these by-products, we described here new glycoalkaloids that could have phytosanitary properties. RESULTS: Solanidine, as a renewable source, was modified with an azido linker and coupl

An Operational Framework for Insecticide Resistance Management Planning.

Arthropod vectors transmit organisms that cause many emerging and reemerging diseases, and their control is reliant mainly on the use of chemical insecticides. Only a few classes of insecticides are available for public health use, and the increased spread of insecticide resistance is a major threat to sustainable disease control. The primary strategy for mitigating the detrimental effects of insecticide resistance is the development of an insecticide resistance management plan. However, few examples exist to show how to implement such plans programmatically. We describe the formulation and im…

Insecticide resistance status in Culex quinquefasciatus in Benin.

BACKGROUND: Culex quinquefasciatus, an arboviral and filarial vector, is present year round in several cities of the Republic of Benin. There is more information on the resistance status to malaria vectors compared to Culicines. It is therefore unfortunate that the international focus is on Anopheles control and not so much done against Cx. quinquefasciatus, a rather more resilient mosquito to many insecticides that deserves attention. The present study aims to assess the resistance status of Cx. quinquefasciatus to carbamates, pyrethroids and organochlorine and discuss the implications for ve…

Polyenylcyclopropane carboxylic esters with high insecticidal activity.

BACKGROUND: Pyrethroids are synthetic derivatives of naturally occurring pyrethrum. These molecules are widely used in agriculture for ant, fly and mosquito control and for lawn and garden care. Pyrethroids are the optically active esters of 2,2-dimethyl-3-(2-methylpropenyl)-cyclopropane carboxylic acid, also known as chrysanthemic acid. However, their intense use has resulted in the development of resistance in many insect species. Herein, specific structural modifications of the pyrethroid scaffold and their effect on insecticidal activity, especially on resistant pests strains, are reported
