Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is an established treatment for brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) that drives blood vessel closure through cellular proliferation, thrombosis and fibrosis, but is limited by a delay to occlusion of 2-3 years and a maximum treatable size of 3 cm. In the present study, we examined serotonin (5-HT)-induced intracellular Ca(2+) ([Ca(2+)]i) responses to hypoxia in glomus cells isolated from carotid body (CB) of the rat. 5-HT did not induce any [Ca(2+)]i responses in clustered glomus cells during normoxia (21% O2), whereas, the perfusion of hypoxic solution (1% O2) induced repetitive increases in [Ca(2+)]i in the same specimens. In this paper, we fabricated novel carboxymethyl chitosan-coated CdTe quantum dots (CMC-CdTe QDs) via the electrostatic interaction between amino groups in the carboxymethyl chitosan polymeric chains and carboxyl groups of the CdTe QDs. We have investigated the effects of extracellular and intracellular pH on single channel and macroscopic (macropatches) currents through volume-regulated anion channels (VRAC) in endothelial cells. Activation of protein kinase C (PKC) modulates the mobilization of intracellular Ca2+ induced by extracellular ATP in rat ventricular myocytes. Pretreatment of myocytes with PKC activators attenuated both the ATP-induced Ca2+ transient and the noradrenergic potentiation of the Ca2+ response.
