Proprioceptive Sonomyographic Control: A novel method for intuitive and proportional control of multiple degrees-of-freedom for individuals with upper extremity limb loss.

Technological advances in multi-articulated prosthetic hands have outpaced the development of methods to intuitively control these devices. In fact, prosthetic users often cite "difficulty of use" as a key contributing factor for abandoning their prostheses. To overcome the limitations of the currently pervasive myoelectric control strategies, namely unintuitive proportional control of multiple degrees-of-freedom, we propose a novel approach: proprioceptive sonomyographic control. Unlike myoelectric control strategies which measure electrical activation of muscles and use the extracted signals

Applying intuitive EEG-controlled grasp neuroprostheses in individuals with spinal cord injury: Preliminary results from the MoreGrasp clinical feasibility study.

The aim of the MoreGrasp project is to develop a non-invasive, multimodal user interface including a brain-computer interface (BCI) for control of a grasp neuroprostheses in individuals with high spinal cord injury (SCI). The first results of the ongoing MoreGrasp clinical feasibility study involving end users with SCI are presented. This includes BCI screening sessions, in which we investigate the electroencephalography (EEG) patterns associated with single, natural movements of the upper limb. These patterns will later be used to control the neuroprosthesis. Additionally, the MoreGrasp grasp

A prospective randomized controlled trial comparing conventional Intuitive® procedure card recommended port placement with the modified Indian (Manipal) technique.

INTRODUCTION: The da Vinci® X hybrid systems (Intuitive Surgical®, Sunnyvale CA) provides standard sites recommendations for port placement during robotic surgery; including that for colorectal procedures. The author's encountered challenges while adhering to the provided instructions, such as clash of instruments and arms and need for additional ports, and hence to overcome these challenges attempted a few innovative technical modifications. The surgical results as well as merits of the revised Indian (Manipal) port placement with single docking technique are presented here. METHODS: Twenty

Promoting positive body image and intuitive eating in women with overweight and obesity via an online intervention: Results from a pilot feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Body dissatisfaction and dietary restraint are established risk factors for eating disorders and are also prevalent in individuals who are overweight and obese. Studies have shown that online prevention programs can lower these risk factors. The aim of this feasibility pilot study was to estimate effects of a 12-week online health promotion and eating disorder prevention program in a sample of women with overweight or obesity, but without binge eating. METHODS: The program was evaluated in an uncontrolled pre-post-follow-upstudy over 12 months. Outcome measures were eating disorde

Wearing face masks to protect oneself and/or others: Counter-intuitive results from a simple epidemic model accounting for selfish and altruistic human behavior.

We study a simple SIS epidemic model accounting for human behavior. Individuals can decide at each instant of time whether or not they wear a face mask. Mask wearing decreases susceptibility to and/or transmission of the pathogen. We consider a situation in which individuals are unaware of their health status (infected or not), but they can perceive the prevalence of infection at the population level. This assumption fits situations in which most infected individuals are asymptomatic. Individual decision dynamics depends both on prevalence, as a proxy for the risk of being infected or infectin

Measurement invariance of the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 across country, ethnicity, sex, and sexual orientation: A cross-cultural study between Brazil and the U.S.

Intuitive eating is defined as being connected to internal hunger, satiety, and appetitive cues and flexibly using these cues to determine when, what, and how much to eat. The Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) is a widely used measure of facets of intuitive eating. However, the scale has shown unstable factor structure in several validation studies and there is a lack of studies investigating the measurement invariance of the IES-2 beyond sex. We aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the IES-2, testing several factor structures among Brazilian and U.S. samples of men and women; to te

Intuitive control of additional prosthetic joints via electro-neuromuscular constructs improves functional and disability outcomes during home use-a case study.

Objective. The advent of surgical reconstruction techniques has enabled the recreation of myoelectric controls sites that were previously lost due to amputation. This advancement is particularly beneficial for individuals with higher-level arm amputations, who were previously constrained to using a single degree of freedom (DoF) myoelectric prostheses due to the limited number of available muscles from which control signals could be extracted. In this study, we explore the use of surgically created electro-neuromuscular constructs to intuitively control multiple bionic joints during daily life

Neurotized free VRAM used to create myoelectric signals in a muscle-depleted area for targeted muscle reinnervation for intuitive prosthesis control: A case report.

Targeted muscle reinnervation enables native muscles to send electromyographic signals to myoelectric receptors, which drive movements in a prosthesis. This system requires voluntary contracture of muscles for sequential control of powered prosthetic joints. This report describes a surgical solution for cases where the chest wall is depleted of muscle targets. A 13-year-old boy with left forequarter amputation and pectoralis major resection as a result of extended necrotizing facilities 8 years prior received a neurotized free Vertical Rectus Abdominus Mycocutaneous (VRAM) flap (28 × 10 cm) de

Examining the indirect effects of multiracial identity invalidation on mindful eating and intuitive exercise via positive embodiment in age-diverse Black-White multiracial women.

Black-White (B/W) multiracial women represent one of the fastest-growing demographics in the United States and are at increased risk of mental health concerns due to their historical connection to racism in combination with other multiracial stressors. However, despite the growing multiracial population and the known increased health risks among this group, there remains little understanding of how sociocultural and contextual factors are related to their experiences of eating, exercise, and embodiment. Therefore, the study investigated the relationships among mindful eating (ME), intuitive ex

Associations between adverse childhood experiences and eating disorder psychopathology and intuitive eating in Chinese adult men and women: Variable-centered and person-centered approaches.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common risk factors for a range of maladaptive physical and psychological health outcomes, including eating disorder (ED) psychopathology. However, most research to date has focused on traditional, thinness-oriented ED psychopathology in Western samples, with limited evidence regarding the potential links between ACEs and other diverse eating-related outcomes, particularly in non-Western contexts (e.g., China). This study examined associations between ACEs and a range of eating-related outcomes, including thinness- and muscularity-oriented ED psychopath

Resistance, capacitance, and electrode kinetic effects in Fourier-transformed large-amplitude sinusoidal voltammetry: emergence of powerful and intuitively obvious tools for recognition of patterns of behavior.

Large-amplitude sinusoidal ac voltammetric techniques, when analyzed in the frequency domain using the Fourier transform-inverse Fourier transform sequence, produce the expected dc and fundamental harmonic ac responses in addition to very substantial second, third, and higher ac harmonics that arise from the presence of significant nonlinearity. A full numerical simulation of the process, Red right arrow over left arrow Ox + e(-), incorporates terms for the uncompensated resistance (R(u)), capacitance of the double layer (C(dl)), and slow electron transfer kinetics (in particular, the reversib

Transoral robotic thyroidectomy on two human cadavers using the Intuitive da Vinci single port robotic surgical system and CO2 insufflation: Preclinical feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Transoral vestibular approach endoscopic thyroidectomy has gained popularity worldwide because it avoids a cutaneous incision. Some surgeons have expressed reservations about operating with only 2 instruments in the endoscopic technique, and some therefore utilize an axillary incision as an adjunct to facilitate dissection. The Intuitive da Vinci single port robotic system offers the potential to overcome this limitation without an axillary incision. METHODS: In this study, the Intuitive da Vinci single port robotic surgical system was used to perform transoral thyroidectomy on 2

Adverse-event reporting profiles of the Intuitive SureForm robotic stapling system in the FDA MAUDE database differ by product code: a comparison of GDW- and NAY-coded reports.

Prior MAUDE studies of robotic surgery have largely characterized platform-level or procedure-specific adverse-event profiles, whereas subsystem-level surveillance of robotic stapling devices remains limited. Robotic stapling systems are multi-component devices, and post-market adverse-event reports may be distributed across separate regulatory product codes for stapler instruments and reloads. We conducted a retrospective, product-code-aware database study of Intuitive Surgical SureForm-related reports in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience d

BALB/c female subjected to valproic acid during gestational period exhibited greater microglial and behavioral changes than male mice: A significant contra intuitive result.

Most animal model studies of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) were performed in males. Thus, little is known about the mechanisms underlying disease progression in females. Here, we searched for potential influences of sex and environment on gestational valproic acid-induced behavioral abnormalities using hippocampal-dependent tasks, and on number and morphometry of microglia of the molecular layer of the dentate gyrus (Mol-DG). We compared male and females BALB/c control mice with BALB/c mice gestationally exposed to VPA with regards to exploratory activity and risk assessment in novel environ

The mind-eat program leads to greater improvements in mindful, emotional, and external eating compared to intuitive eating-oriented education in adults with overweight or obesity: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Mindful eating interventions target behavioral and emotional processes involved in eating, but most structured programs have been evaluated in English-speaking settings and often compared with passive controls. This randomized controlled trial assessed the effectiveness of the Mind-Eat program, a structured mindfulness-based intervention, versus treatment as usual consisting of a therapeutic patient education (TPE) program grounded in intuitive eating principles, in adults with overweight or obesity. METHODS: In this single-center trial, 66 adults with overweight or obesity were r
