The effects of two different zinc chelators, diethyldithiocarbamate (DEDTC) and calcium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), in full semen samples and 'swim-up' samples were investigated. DEDTC, which crosses cell membranes, and EDTA, which does not cross cell membranes, were added to semen samples in different concentrations. In vitro experiments were carried out to study the effects of "respiratory" and "metabolic" acid-base alterations on canine coronary arteries precontracted by high potassium. It has been shown by spectroscopy and by a Photosensitive Index method, involving measurements of interfacial tension, that Cu2+ and Ni2+ form 2:1 complexes with oxytetracycline and 1:1 complexes with demethylchlortetracycline. Fe2+, Zn2+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ form weaker 1:1 complexes with both drugs. The possibility is discussed of using metal ions to reduce photosensitization by tetracyclines in-vivo.

In searching for aqua sodium species acting as Brønsted acids in catalysis, we explored the phenomenon that sodium tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate dihydrate (NaBAr(F)4.2H2O) evidently provides one proton source to initiate the polymerization of vinyl ethers in anhydrous dichloromethane solutions. In addition, NaBAr(F)4 catalyzed efficiently in the polymerization of activated styrenes, such as p-methoxystyrene.

The effects were tested of Ca ions and Sr ions on interactions of isoprenaline and its competitive inhibitor with beta-adrenoceptors in the taenia caecum from the guinea pig. Ca ions were involved in the combination of isoprenaline with the beta-adrenoceptors but not involved in the combination of the competitive inhibitor with the beta-adrenoceptors.
