Editorial: Antidepressants to the Rescue in Severe Mood Dysregulation and Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder?

Children with irritability and outbursts pose a serous therapeutic problem. Many of them have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD … ) or placebo over 8 weeks. The response to CTP was complicated by lack of specific measures of both irritable mood and severity of outbursts. Future studies should include standardized and normed parent and teacher measures of both externalizing and internalizing behavior as well as irritability specific measures rating how the child feels. Suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior according to the C-SSRS in a European cohort of Huntington's disease gene expansion carriers.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) gene expansion carriers are at an increased risk of suicide, but so far, no studies have investigated the full spectrum of suicidality, including suicidal ideation, suicidal behavior and self-injurious behavior. METHODS: We included 1451 HD gene expansion carriers (age 48.4 years (SD 14.0), 54.8% female) of the REGISTRY study of the European Huntington's Disease Network. Lifetime suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior were assessed with the Columbia-Suicidal Severity Rating Scale. Motor symptoms and disease stage were assessed using subscales of the Unif

Network analysis of anxiety and depression in the functionally impaired elderly.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from previous studies has confirmed that functionally impaired elderly individuals are susceptible to comorbid anxiety and depression. Network theory holds that the comorbidity emerges from interactions between anxiety and depression symptoms. This study aimed to investigate the fine-grained relationships among anxiety and depression symptoms in the functionally impaired elderly and identify central and bridge symptoms to provide potential targets for intervention of these two comorbid disorders. METHODS: A total of 325 functionally impaired elderly individuals from five

Is bipolar disorder specifically associated with aggression?

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have suggested that bipolar disorder (BP) in adults is associated with aggressive behaviors. However, most studies have included only inpatients and have not taken into consideration possible confounding factors. The goal of the present study was to compare the prevalence of aggression in subjects with BP compared to subjects with other, non-BP psychopathology and healthy controls. METHODS: Subjects with bipolar I disorder (BP-I) and bipolar II disorder (BP-II) (n = 255), non-BP psychopathology (n = 85), and healthy controls (n = 84) were recruited. Aggression was m

Mood states at 1600 and 4300 meters terrestrial altitude.

Personal anecdotes suggest that ascent to high altitude can cause mood changes such as depression, apathy, and drowsiness. Observed behaviors at high altitude indicate that people can become more euphoric, irritable, or argumentative. Since there are few systematic and quantitative studies assessing the effects of altitude on mood, this study compared moods measured at two different altitudes and times of day (morning-evening) using a standardized scale. Self-rated moods were determined twice daily in 19 males and 16 females with the Clyde Mood Scale. Baseline values were determined at 200 m;

Description and validation of the Affective Temperament Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Akiskal and Mallya (Psychopharmacol Bull. 1987;23:68-73) proposed criteria defining 4 affective temperaments-hyperthymic, irritable, cyclothymic, and dysthymic. This study aims to develop and validate, using a 3-point rating scale, a short questionnaire that assesses these temperaments. METHODS: The Affective Temperament Questionnaire (ATQ) was administered to a family-based sample of individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BP), or no mood disorder (N = 378). Factor analyses, internal consistency, and analysis of variance were undertaken to examine the

Migraine Comorbidities.

Novel knowledge about the interrelationships and reciprocal effects of migraine and epilepsy, migraine and mood disorders, or migraine and irritable bowel syndrome has emerged in recent decades. Over time, comorbid pathologies associated with migraine that share common physiopathological mechanisms were studied. Among these studied pathologies is epilepsy, a disorder with common ion channel dysfunctions as well as dysfunctions in glutamatergic transmission. A high degree of neuronal excitement and ion channel abnormalities are associated with epilepsy and migraine and antiepileptic drugs are u

Korean Validation of the Short Version of the TEMPS-A (Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire) in Patients with Mood Disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A) is designed to assess affective temperaments. The short version of the TEMPS-A (TEMPS-A-SV) has been translated into various languages for use in research and clinical settings. However, no research has been conducted to validate the Korean version of the TEMPS-A-SV in patients with mood disorders. The goal of this study is to evaluate the reliability and validity of the TEMPS-A-SV in Korean mood disorder patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional retrospective

Effects of the pure antiandrogen RU 23.903 (anandron) on sexuality, aggression, and mood in male-to-female transsexuals.

Sexuality, aggression, and mood were investigated in 14 presurgical male-to-female transsexuals, undergoing antiandrogenic treatment with anandron, a pure antiandrogen. Subjects were given a test battery the morning prior to treatment onset and after 8 weeks of treatment. In addition they were requested to complete daily forms concerned with sexual behavior and mood. Morning erections and the frequency of thoughts and fantasies about sex decreased after anandron intake. Aggressive feelings were uncorrelated with testosterone level. Moods such as level of energy, feelings of relaxation, fatigue

Mood dysregulation.

The publication of the DSM-5 is nearing, yet a debate continues about the boundaries of bipolar disorder (BP) in children and adolescents. This article focuses on two key components of this debate that are often treated under the collective term mood dysregulation: the first is chronic irritability (and the proposed DSM-5 category of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder) and the other concerns short episodes of mania-like symptoms. We update our previous review [Stringaris in Eur Child Adolesc Psychiatry 20(2):61-66, 2011] and also present relevant neurobiological evidence. Most findings so

Does depression influence symptom severity in irritable bowel syndrome? Case study of a patient with irritable bowel syndrome and bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is frequently associated with mood disorder. However, it is typically difficult to distinguish between disturbed mood as a causal agent and disturbed mood as a consequence of the experience of IBS. This report considers the association between mood and symptom severity in a patient with diarrhea-predominant IBS and stable, rapid cycling bipolar disorder with a predominantly depressive course. Such a case provides an important opportunity to determine the direction of the relationship between mood and IBS symptom severity because the fluctuations of moo

The association of affective temperaments with impairment and psychopathology in a young adult sample.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has examined the association of affective temperaments, as measured by the TEMPS-A, with DSM bipolar disorders. However, the relation of the TEMPS-A with risk for bipolar disorder remains unclear. The present study examined the association of affective temperaments with psychopathology, personality, and functioning in a nonclinically ascertained sample of young adults at risk for bipolar disorder. METHODS: One hundred forty-five participants completed the TEMPS-A, as well as interview and questionnaire measures of psychopathology, personality, and functioning. R

Symptoms and signs of the initial prodrome of bipolar disorder: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Systematic studies addressing symptoms, signs and temporal aspects of initial bipolar prodrome are reviewed to identify potential clinical targets for early intervention. METHODS: The databases PsycINFO, PubMed, EMBASE and British Nursing Index were searched for original studies. RESULTS: Eight studies were identified. Irritability and aggressiveness, sleep disturbances, depression and mania symptoms/signs, hyperactivity, anxiety, and mood swings are clusters representing common symptoms and signs of the distal prodrome of bipolar disorder (BD). As time to full BD onset decreases
