CASE REPORT: We report a case of keratitis in a female contact lens wearer, who developed a deep corneal abscess. The culture of a corneal biopsy scraping was positive for multiresistant Fusarium solani. The patient has a complicated clinical course and failed to respond to local and systemic antifungal treatment, requiring eye enucleation.
CONCLUSION: Fusarium keratitis may progress to severe endophthalmitis. Clinical suspicion is paramount in order to start antifungal therapy without delay. Therapy is complex due to the high resistance of this organism to usual antifungal drugs.

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria are environmental, opportunistic pathogens that are increasingly being recognized as important causes of many human diseases. Among them, rapidly growing mycobacteria are the most notorious organisms causing infectious keratitis. Non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) keratitis commonly occurs after trauma or refractive surgery, and can masquerade as fungal, herpetic or amoebic keratitis. Therefore, the diagnosis is often delayed. Prolonged medical treatment and judicious surgical debridement are required in order to eradicate the pathogens. Combination therapy with a…

Ciprofloxacin, a new broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against a variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, has recently become available in topical ophthalmic solution (3 mg/ml) for the treatment of bacterial keratitis. It has rapidly become the drug of choice in treating bacterial keratitis. We treated three patients with bacterial corneal ulcers that were resistant to ciprofloxacin, yet were effectively treated with other topical antimicrobial agents. The initial culture results are important in the therapy of corneal ulcers.

Varicella disciform stromal keratitis is rare. It occurs several weeks or months after the skin rash. We report 4 cases in children, two of whom developed one or more recurrent episodes. Treatment based on local steroids was long and difficult to dose. One case treated with oral aciclovir did not show a better clinical course than the other patients.

Although much needs to be learned about the serious clinical problem of herpes infection of the cornea, we have come a long way. We now have effective topical antiviral drugs. We have animal models which, with a high degree of reliability, clearly predict the effect to be expected clinically in man, as well as the toxicity. We have systemically active drugs and the potential of getting highly active, potent, completely selective drugs, with the possibility that perhaps the source of viral reinfection can be eradicated. The biology of recurrent herpes and stromal disease is gradually being unde

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical features, diagnosis and management of immune stromal keratitis/interstitial keratitis (IK) associated with microsporidial epithelial keratitis.
METHODS: Between October 2020 and January 2021, medical records of IK patients microbiologically proven as microsporidia from samples collected from corneal epithelium on smear examination, and/ or molecular analysis were reviewed. Demography, clinical profile and treatment were analysed. Real-time PCR (RT-PCR) for adenovirus (ADV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zo…
