Phytochemical Composition and Biological Activities of Dracocephalum Species Native to Kazakhstan: A Comprehensive Review.

Medicinal plants are a valuable source of bioactive metabolites, and current research focuses particularly on increasing their productivity and studying previously little-known species. Of particular interest are representatives of the families Lamiaceae, Apiaceae, and Asteraceae, for which either no data exists or only brief information is available regarding their chemical composition and biological properties. In this context, the family Lamiaceae, one of the dominant families in the flora of Kazakhstan, deserves special attention. Within the republic, it is represented by 233 species, grou…

Expansion within the CYP71D subfamily drives the heterocyclization of tanshinones synthesis in Salvia miltiorrhiza.

Tanshinones are the bioactive nor-diterpenoid constituents of the Chinese medicinal herb Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza). These groups of chemicals have the characteristic furan D-ring, which differentiates them from the phenolic abietane-type diterpenoids frequently found in the Lamiaceae family. However, how the 14,16-epoxy is formed has not been elucidated. Here, we report an improved genome assembly of Danshen using a highly homozygous genotype. We identify a cytochrome P450 (CYP71D) tandem gene array through gene expansion analysis. We show that CYP71D373 and CYP71D375 catalyze hydroxylatio…

Pregnant women usually turn to natural products to relieve pregnancy-related ailments which might pose health risks. Mentha pulegium L. (MP, Lamiaceae) is a common insect repellent, and the present work validates its abortifacient capacity, targeting morphological anomalies, biological, and behavioral consequences, compared to misoprostol. The study also includes untargeted metabolite profiling of MP extract and fractions thereof viz. methylene chloride (MecH), ethyl acetate (EtOAc), butanol (But), and the remaining liquor (Rem. Aq.) by UPLC-ESI-MS-TOF, to unravel the constituents provoking ab…

Haplotype-resolved chromosome-level genome sequence of Elsholtzia splendens (Nakai ex F.Maek.).

Elsholtzia splendens, a perennial herb native to East Asia, is valued for its ornamental and medicinal uses, particularly in treating inflammatory and febrile conditions. Recent studies have highlighted its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, antithrombotic, and lipid-lowering properties of its compounds. Additionally, E. splendens shows potential for phytoremediation owing to its ability to hyperaccumulate copper (Cu), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and cadmium (Cd). However, its role in remediation conflicts with its medicinal use because of the risk of heavy metal accumulation. Genome

Toxicity and deficiency of copper in Elsholtzia splendens affect photosynthesis biophysics, pigments and metal accumulation.

Elsholtzia splendens is a copper-tolerant plant species growing on copper deposits in China. Spatially and spectrally resolved kinetics of in vivo absorbance and chlorophyll fluorescence in mesophyll of E. splendens were used to investigate the copper-induced stress from deficiency and toxicity as well as the acclimation to excess copper stress. The plants were cultivated in nutrient solutions containing either Fe(III)-EDTA or Fe(III)-EDDHA. Copper toxicity affected light-acclimated electron flow much stronger than nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) or dark-acclimated photochemical efficiency of

Peppermint essential oil: its phytochemistry, biological activity, pharmacological effect and application.

Mentha (also known as peppermint), a genus of plants in the taxonomic family Lamiaceae (mint family), is widely distributed throughout temperate regions of the world. Mentha contains various constituents that are classified as peppermint essential oil (PEO) and non-essential components. PEO, consisting mainly of menthol, menthone, neomenthol and iso-menthone, is a mixture of volatile metabolites with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, scolicidal, immunomodulatory, antitumor, neuroprotective, antifatigue and antioxidant activities. Mounting evidence indicates that PEO may pharmacologi…

Ultra-fast underwater suction traps.

Carnivorous aquatic Utricularia species catch small prey animals using millimetre-sized underwater suction traps, which have fascinated scientists since Darwin's early work on carnivorous plants. Suction takes place after mechanical triggering and is owing to a release of stored elastic energy in the trap body accompanied by a very fast opening and closing of a trapdoor, which otherwise closes the trap entrance watertight. The exceptional trapping speed--far above human visual perception--impeded profound investigations until now. Using high-speed video imaging and special microscopy technique

Evaluation of the efficacy of Perillyl alcohol in the treatment of Eimeria tenella infection.

Recently, there has been an increased focus on the development of novel anti-parasitic drugs that exhibit both highly efficacy and low toxicity due to growing concerns associated with the widespread use of such drugs. Natural products have garnered significant interest owing to their diverse biological activities and minimal adverse effects. In this study, we assessed the anti-Eimeria tenella activity of four plant compounds belonging to the Lamiaceae family, namely Perillyl alcohol, Carvone, Menthone and Perilla aldehyde. Our in vitro experiments demonstrated that all four compounds, particul…

Four compounds beta-sitosterol, beta-sitosterol-3-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside, ursolic acid and 4',5,6-trihydroxy-3', 7-dimethoxyflavone were characterized from the dichloromethane extract of the aerial parts of Satureja khuzistanica (Lamiaceae), a native medicinal plant growing in Iran, on the basis of spectral analysis and comparing with the data in literature. The natural occurrence of these compounds can be conclusive for the chemotaxonomic characterization of the genus Satureja.
