Investigations were made by means of a larvae precipitation test (LPT) on different laboratory animals (pigs and white mice, and pigs, rabbits, guinea pigs and white mice respectively) experimentally infected with Ascaris suum and Toxocara canis respectively for the serological evidence of specific A. suum and T. canis antibodies. Living A. suum larvae isolated from the lungs of experimentally infected white mice forming oral, excretion porus and cuticula precipitates proved to be a suitable antigen for the intravital evidence of prepatent A. suum infections in pigs and mice. By using living T…

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a term used to describe the migrating linear skin lesions caused by the burrowing of parasitic nematode larvae within the epidermis. It may cause significant discomfort and distress to patients despite being a relatively self-limiting condition. We present a case of a 34-year-old female with no significant past medical history who arrived at our institution with a pruritic rash on the left foot. Previous treatment with antivirals and azoles was ineffective. Interestingly, her travel history revealed a recent trip to Barbados which broadened the differential for…

Cutaneous larva migrans is a dermatitis, typically acquired in warm tropical or sub-tropical countries, caused by migration of the larvae of nematodes (hookworm; mainly Ancylostoma braziliense and, occasionally, Ancylostoma caninum or Uncinaria stenocephala), which are parasitic on animals such as cats and dogs, into the patient's skin. The larvae penetrate the skin after contact with infected soil and cause a typical creeping eruption. Patients with cutaneous larva migrans seen in Europe have usually acquired the disease following a stay in a tropical or sub-tropical area. How-ever, some case…

To determine whether increased migration is associated with an increase in incidence of toxocariasis (visceral larva migrans), we analyzed clinical data obtained from immigrants from Latin America. Although infection with Toxocara sp. roundworm larvae is distributed worldwide, seroprevalence is highest in tropical and subtropical areas.

A 38-year-old woman presented with worsening cough, blood eosinophilia, and pulmonary infiltrates. Bronchoalveolar lavage showed 96.4% eosinophils. The diagnosis of visceral larva migrans (VLM) was made based on the positive results in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for Toxocara canis together with clinical symptoms and laboratory data. Pulmonary infiltrates due to VLM generally manifest as a transient form of Löffler's syndrome or simple eosinophilic pneumonia mainly in children. Here we report an adult case of VLM, with pulmonary infiltrates pathologically proven to be eosinophilic pneumo…

Helminthic infections are prevalent worldwide. The intestinal ascarid, Toxocara, the animal filarial parasite, Dirofilaria, and the human filarial parasite, Wuchereria or Brugia, produce an array of pulmonary disease in humans. Infections are common in temperate, tropical, and subtropical regions of the world. Pulmonary dirofilariasis is essentially an asymptomatic disease. Most cases are diagnosed accidentally after thoracotomy for a solitary pulmonary nodule presumed to be lung cancer. Clinical manifestations of toxocariasis or visceral larva migrans (VLM) are the result of allergic and infl…

Cutaneous larva migrans is considered to be a self-limited parasitic infection of about 2 to 8 weeks' duration, though it has been reported to persist for as long as 55 weeks. In this case, a healthy 47-year-old white man had multiple serpiginous lesions typical of cutaneous larva migrans for 18 months. A biopsy taken 2 months before presentation showed a parasite consistent with Ancylostoma species deep in a hair follicle. The patient initially responded to topical thiabendazole, but relapse occurred when therapy was discontinued. Oral thiabendazole cured the problem after 22 months of infest…

Two boys with ophthalmomyiasis caused by the first instar larva of the reindeer warble fly Hypoderma tarandi are reported. Both were 9 years old and came from the coast of northern Norway. One had ophthalmomyiasis interna posterior and one eye had been removed because of progressive pain and blindness. Histological examination showed the remains of a fly larva. The second boy had ophthalmomyiasis externa with a tumour in the upper eyelid, and histological examination showed a warble with a well preserved larva. Identification of the parasite in the histological material was based on the findin…

Four serologic techniques for the diagnosis of visceral larva migrans caused by Toxocara canis, namely indirect hemagglutination (IHA), bentonite flocculation (BF), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and double diffusion in agar (Ouchterlony), were evaluated using sera sent to the Center for Disease Control from patients with a presumptive diagnosis of visceral larva migrans (VLM). Patients having 5-6 of the clinical or laboratory criteria for VLM were designated as cases while those with 0-2 criteria served as controls. The sensitivity of the ELISA was 78.3% compared to 18.2%, 25.8% a…
