A case report of cutaneous larva migrans in Argentina.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) represents the most common tropically acquired dermatosis. CLM is caused by infection with hookworm larvae in tropical and sub-tropical areas, and people who have a history of foreign travel and of walking barefoot on sandy soil or beaches are at a high risk of getting infected with it. The diagnosis is usually made on the basis of the typical appearance of the lesion, intense itching and history of foreign travel. CLM is a common parasitic skin disease that can be easily prevented by wearing 'protective' footwear. A case of CLM is described in this article.

Cutaneous larva migrans induced by swallowing live pond loaches.

Freshwater fish, specifically loaches, are potential hosts of Gnathostoma species. Consumption of uncooked freshwater loaches may result in cutaneous larva migrans. We report the case of a 70-year-old Taiwanese man who presented with a serpiginous skin rash on his abdomen. He had eaten live loaches intermittently (sometimes daily) for 5 months before his presentation. On histopathological examination, a transected parasite body and a headbulb were found in the mid-dermis. The parasite was confirmed as belonging to the genus Gnathostoma, most likely Gnathostoma doloresi. The patient recovered u…

Cutaneous larva migrans (hookworm) acquired in Christchurch, New Zealand.

A case of cutaneous larva migrans is presented. The patient acquired the parasite in a suburban Christchurch property. A biopsy confirmed the clinical diagnosis. Cutaneous larva migrans is common in returned travellers from the tropics. It is rare in New Zealand, however. Presumably there were very specific, favourable local factors to allow maturation and transmission of the larva in this case.

Visceral larva migrans and tropical pyomyositis: a case report.

We report a case of tropical pyomyositis in a boy who presented with a severe febrile illness associated with diffuse erythema, and swelling in many areas of the body which revealed on operation extensive necrotic areas of various muscles that required repeated débridement. The patient gave a history of contact with dogs, and an ELISA test for Toxocara canis was positive. He also presented eosinophilia and high serum IgE levels. Staphylococcus aureus was the sole bacteria isolated from the muscles affected. We suggest that tropical pyomyositis may be caused by the presence of migrating larvae

[Visceral larva migrans in adults with severe pulmonary manifestations].

BACKGROUND: Toxocariosis, the most frequent cause of visceral larva migrans, is usually a disease of children due to ingestion of eggs from the roundworm of dogs (Toxocara canis). Clinical expression varies from an symptomatic state to fuminant disorders; hepatomegaly with fever is frequent. Severe symptoms (rarely in adults) may occur. CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old male with no past medical history complained of sudden onset pulmonary disorders. Laboratory findings included eosinophilia on blood tests, a severe respiratory obstructive syndrome and positive serum tests for Toxocara canis. All cl…

[Nematode larva migrans. On two cases of filarial infection].

With rapid air travel, so-called parasitic infections are becoming more important in northern hemisphere and temperate climates. Parasitic disease is usually taken to imply infections caused by protozoa and helminths. The most important helminthic infections in man and with world-wide incidence are schistosomiasis, hookworm, and filariasis. We report the clinico-pathological findings of two patients with filarial infection of soft tissue and lymphatic nodes.

[New elements in the symptomatology of visceral larva migrans].

A retrospective study of 92 cases of visceral larva migrans (VLM) seen in Toulouse demonstrated the high prevalence of the disease in the Midi-Pyrénées region (southern France). The patient population was homogeneous, of middle age and predominantly female. The principal symptoms were chronic asthenia of one year duration on average, associated with cutaneous signs of allergy (pruritus, rashes) and with pain in the right hypochondrium. High total IgE level with presence of anti-VLM IgE was more frequent than eosinophilia, which was moderate. In one-third of the cases VLM also seemed to be resp…

A case of leucocoria caused by visceral larva migrans.

A four-year-old boy was seen in the Eye Department at the Queen Elizabeth Military Hospital, Woolwich, because his parents had noticed that his right pupil appeared white. The diagnosis of toxocaral endophthalmitis was later made. The pathogenesis and management of infestation by Toxocara species are described.

[Visceral larva migrans in childhood: report of 2 cases].

Reports of Visceral larva migrans (VLM) are not frequent in Brazil, but the prevalence of this disease may be more common due to poor environmental conditions to which most of the children are exposed. The most common infectious agent is Toxocara canis, a parasite of the intestinal tract of dogs. Children get infected eating contaminated material with feces of dogs. The ova are swallowed and reach the intestinal lumen of the children. Systemic migration occurs by lymphatic or portal circulation to several organs, most frequently, to the liver and lungs, causing hepatosplenomegaly and/or bronch…

Visceral larva migrans-like syndrome caused by Angiostrongylus costaricensis.

In two cases of ectopic localization of Angiostrongylus costaricensis adult worms and eggs were seen in the liver, causing a granulomatous inflammatory reaction with dense eosinophilic infiltration and necrosis. In the first case, although antibodies for A. costaricensis had been demonstrated, a clinical diagnosis of visceral larva migrans was recorded; however, further examination of a liver biopsy revealed eggs of A. costaricensis. In the second case, severity of the intestinal pathology masked the presence of lesions and an adult A. costaricensis that were discovered in a retrospective stud…

[Toxocariasis in childhood. Visceral larva migrans syndrome (author's transl)].

A case of toxocariasis in a 2(6)/12 years old boy is described. The visceral larva migrans syndrome usually is seen in preschool children. Clinical symptoms were characterised by eosinophilia of more than 30%, leukocytosis, hepatomegaly, pulmonary infiltrations, and hypergammaglobulinaemia. There may be myocardial, ocular or central nervous system involvement, and a few affected children have died. The disease is caused by invasion of the body tissues by Toxocara canis or cati larvae, often ingested by contaminated dirt. The developmental cycle and the migration of the Toxocara larvae in the h…
