OBJECTIVE: Thermal Nd:YAG laser energy is well known for the purpose of blood coagulation. However, little is known about the bleeding frequency following laser-assisted oral surgery in patients on coumarin drugs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare retrospectively the frequency of bleeding complications following Nd:YAG laserassisted versus conventional local coagulation of blood in oral surgery.

After many years of experience, in general we prefer the Nd-YAG laser, although the CO2 laser is an advantage in a few specific cases (lipomas, cranial synostosis). Our study encompasses 61 patients (49 men--80.3%; 12 women--19.7%) treated from September 1998 through August 2001. Mean follow-up covers 25 months (range: 7-43 months). Nine oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas were removed with a contact Nd-YAG laser. Clinical and morphological studies on wound healing and effects of the Nd-YAG laser were performed. Laser coagulation of the prostate has been performed using a bare fiber passed through a sidefiring Albarran bridge containing a distal gold-plated reflector with a deflecting mechanism. The system and the fiber can be used for several dozen treatments. Transurethral laser coagulation with the new Albarran bridge and the noncontact Nd:YAG laser was performed on 45 patients for obstructive symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia.
