Six patients (ages ranging from 19 days to 58 years: three females and three males) with frontal horn coarctations are included into this study. Four of these six patients were found during our consecutive evaluation of 1022 cranial MR imaging examinations, obtained on a 0.5 Tesla unit. The condition was compared with ependymitis granularis. The sizes (largest diameter) of the frontal horn coarctations varied between 7 to 18 mm. There were five patients with unilateral coarctation, and one was bilateral. In a patient the frontal horn coarctation resulted from the fusion of the left leaf of the

A 68-year-old male presented with choroid plexus carcinoma in the left lateral ventricle manifesting as dysarthria and gait disturbance. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a homogeneously enhanced mass in the trigone of the left lateral ventricle. Selective left posterior cerebral arteriography showed the tumor was fed by the left medial posterior choroidal artery. Detailed examinations found no evidence of an extraneural primary focus. He underwent partial removal of the tumor followed by local Lineac irradiation (50 Gy). After irradiation, the serum level of carcinoembryonic antigen decreased

A 30-year-old woman had an arachnoid cyst in the trigone of the right lateral ventricle 5 years before she developed episodic auditory and visual hallucinations as well as delusions of persecution. The psychotic episodes tended to occur after the patient had lain in bed for 1 to 2 hours. After craniotomy and wide excision of the cystic membrane, draining the cystic fluid to the lateral ventricle, the psychotic episodes subsided in a follow-up period of 6 months. We believe that when the patient was recumbent, the trigone cyst blocked the temporal horn further, caused local ischemia, and trigge

Meningiomas within the lateral ventricle in infancy are extremely rare. The authors report such a case because of its rarity. The presented case is a 23-month-old boy, who had gait disturbance as an initial symptom. At the beginning of May, 1985, his mother found his limping, therefore he admitted to our hospital on May 23. On his admission, clinical features were the left mild hemiparesis, the hyperreflexia of left extremities, and the papilloedema on the both sides. A CT scan revealed a homogeneously enhanced mass at the right trigon. Cerebral angiography showed enlargement and displacement

Corrosion casts of the complete vascular network of the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricle in the cat brain were studied in SEM using the injection-replication method. The villi of this plexus are located only on its supero-anterior and infero-posterior parts, being most densely packed in the former region, close to the interventricular foramen. The capillaries of the villi display small nodular thickenings, which suggest the presence of small, sinusoidal dilatations. The main vessel supplying the plexus with blood is the anterior choroidal artery. The plexus is also characterized by a pa

The authors report on a case of epidermoid tumor in the lateral cerebral ventricle. Epidermoid tumors are relatively uncommon intracranial lesions and were first described by Esmarch. Till now about 300 cases have been reported. In Japan this tumor was first described by Yamamura, and since then many cases have been reported. But the one situated in the lateral ventricle has not been reported yet in this country. The significance of echo-encephalography is discussed because this procedure was very useful in determining the location and the nature of the tumor of this case.

INTRODUCTION: In schizophrenia patients the lateral ventricle enlargement has mostly been reported in relationship with smaller cortical and/or subcortical brain volumes; and it has been observed that ventricular system growth may be a consequence of the smaller caudate nucleus volume. Bicaudate parameters have been used in the Alzheimer dementia and Huntington's chorea diagnosing in order to evaluate brain changes and the enlargement of the lateral ventricles.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This study has been carried out on 140 patients out of which 70 patients (30 men and 40 women) who met the ICD …

Intra-ventricular hemorrhage, with the resultant cerebral ventricle dilation, is a common cause of brain injury in preterm neonates. Clinically, monitoring is performed using 2-D ultrasound (US); however, its clinical utility in dilation is limited because it cannot provide accurate measurements of irregular volumes such as those of the ventricles, and this might delay treatment until the patient's condition deteriorates severely. We have developed a 3-D US system to image the lateral ventricles of neonates within the confines of incubators. We describe an in vivo ventricle volume validation s…

OBJECTIVE: We report the case of a patient with extensive pneumocephalus extending into the lateral ventricles from a brain abscess arising from a cholesteatoma-induced defect in the skull base.
CASE REPORT: A 70-year-old man with cholesteatoma presented with right-sided otalgia, otorrhoea and progressive headaches. Computed tomography showed a tegmental defect (approximately 2 × 2 cm) at the right mastoid antrum. A T1-weighted, gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging scan showed pneumocephalus in both lateral ventricles, which was directly connected to the mastoid cavity via a brain a…

BACKGROUND: Recurrent hypoglycemia occurs during insulin therapy in patients with diabetes mellitus and is a significant cause of brain dysfunction in these patients. The functioning of the hematocerebrospinal fluid barrier and the production of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are of great importance in ensuring brain activity. The main volume of CSF is formed by the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricles (LV) of the brain and the glymphatic system of the brain. The role of the choroid plexus in the development of brain dysfunction in hypoglycemia has not been sufficiently studied.
OBJECTIVE: The…

BACKGROUND: Deep medullary veins (DMVs) play important roles within the cerebrovascular network related to brain drainage and clearance. Although they have been previously correlated with brain volume, it is unknown whether their count is specifically correlated with subcortical or cortical volume changes.
PURPOSE: This study aims to better understand the relationship between DMVs, subcortical (lateral ventricle to intracranial volume ratio (ICV)) and cortical atrophy (cortical thickness) to identify whether DMVs can be a predictor of volume changes in these regions.
METHODS: We performed a

J. Hassoun and co-workers (1982) described two cases presenting intraventricular tumors of nervous origin, coined by them with the term "central neurocytoma" of the ground of electron microscopic data. As shown by the studies of other authors, central neurocytoma represents a separate morphological entity having light- and electron-microscopic and immunohistochemical characteristic of its own. In the recently published WHO classification of brain tumors (1993) central neurocytoma is entered as a tumor presenting new morphological patterns. Central neurocytoma occurs mainly in young persons, de

Electrical stimulation (0.3 mA in intensity, 80 Hz in frequency, 0.7 ms in signal duration) applied at 17.00 h in the lateral and third ventricles induced a significant increase of nocturnal paradoxical sleep (PS). This effect persisted for two consecutive days in both cases. Non-specific aspects involved in this effect are discussed and the results are commented on in terms of humoral processes and possible control of pineal gland activity.

Non-neoplastic intracranial cysts (NICCs) are usually stable and typically do not cause symptoms throughout life. Among the various NICCs, rare spontaneous disappearances of arachnoid cysts, colloid cysts, and Rathke?s cleft cysts in various locations have been reported. To our knowledge, no reports to date have described spontaneous disappearance of choroid plexus cysts (CPCs). We here report the first case of spontaneous bilateral disappearance of CPCs. Although the exact pathogenic mechanisms remain unclear, we believe that a sudden transient change in intracranial pressure or cerebrospinal
