Opioid use and risk of Clostridioides difficile infection in hospitalized patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a leading cause of nosocomial infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Evidence suggests that opioid use may increase the risk of CDI in hospitalized patients. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to assess the association between opioid use and CDI among hospitalized patients. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted from inception to January 2024 across PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. The search was supplemented by hand-searching reference lists of included articles.

The role of prophylactic transpapillary pancreatic stenting in distal pancreatectomy: a meta-analysis.

Pancreatic fistula (PF) is the most frequent complication after distal pancreatectomy (DP). Prophylactic transpapillary pancreatic stenting (PTPS) has been proposed recently for the prevention of PF after DP. In this meta-analysis, a comprehensive search was performed in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. Studies analyzing the results of PTPS in DP were considered eligible for this meta-analysis. The analyzed outcome variables included PF rate, postoperative morbidity, non-PF-related complications, mortality, operation duration, and hospital stay. Four studies with 200 patient

Promoting childbirth companions in South Africa: a randomised pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Most women delivering in South African State Maternity Hospitals do not have a childbirth companion; in addition, the quality of care could be better, and at times women are treated inhumanely. We piloted a multi-faceted intervention to encourage uptake of childbirth companions in state hospitals, and hypothesised that lay carers would improve the behaviour of health professionals. METHODS: We conducted a pilot randomised controlled trial of an intervention to promote childbirth companions in hospital deliveries. We promoted evidence-based information for maternity staff at 10 hos

Scorpion bite prevalence and complications: report from a referral centre in southern Iran.

In this study we describe the clinical features of scorpion bites in southern Iran. The records of scorpion bite victims from January 2000 to January 2009 were obtained from the record library of the Shiraz Nemazi Hospital, Shiraz, Iran. A total of 232 scorpion bite patients were included. Only 14 patients (6%) developed systemic complications. Acute renal failure (ARF) and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) were the most prevalent systemic complications. The renal toxicity of scorpion envenomation is mostly due to Hemiscorpius lepturus stings and this complication is more common in

Neurologist or psychiatrist? The public and private domains of Jean-Martin Charcot.

The emergence of neurology as an autonomous, prestigious field in late-nineteenth-century Paris is well known. Less appreciated is the role that neurologists played vis-à-vis the cognate older field of psychiatry. Taking Jean-Martin Charcot, the most influential neurologist of his time, as a test case, this paper contrasts his attitudes and practice in the public setting of teaching and hospital work with his private practice. A staunch defender of a clear distinction between his field and psychiatry, Charcot's private practice displayed more flexibility. Treating hysteria and neurasthenia cre

Clinical Outcomes of PCI in Hospitals With or Without Surgical Backup: A Meta-analysis.

Percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) have seen a steady rise. Recent guidelines have established that PCIs conducted at non-surgical on-site (NSOS) facilities have low complication rates and outcomes comparable to surgical on-site (SOS) centers. However, differing perspectives in the growing literature continue to sustain controversy. A thorough literature review was performed across four databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science, to identify studies comparing outcomes between hospitals. The primary endpoints were: 30-day mortality, myocardial infarction (
