Rapid detection of Bovicola ovis using colourimetric loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP): a potential tool for the detection of sheep lice infestation on farm.

The sheep body louse, Bovicola ovis (B. ovis), is one of the most significant ectoparasites affecting Australia's sheep flocks. Despite this, detection methods for B. ovis infestation are limited to visual inspection and ELISA. A colourimetric loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method was developed and evaluated for the detection of B. ovis DNA. Diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of LAMP were compared with those of visual inspection and PCR and validated using field samples collected from 22 farms. Two different DNA extraction methods using a commercial kit and a boiling method

Comparative efficacy of three pediculicides to treat head lice infestation in primary school girls: a randomised controlled assessor blind trial in rural Iran.

BACKGROUND: Head lice infestation (Pediculosis) is one of the most important health challenges particularly in primary school-aged children. It is often present among 6-11-year-old students in various tropical and temperate regions of the world. The aim of this study was to examine epidemiologic indices and comparative analysis of two pyrethroid-based and one non-chemical pediculicide products on head lice treatment of primary school girls in a rural setting of Fars province, south Iran, as part of a randomized controlled assessor blind trial. METHODS: Before treatment, infested students were

Space-time cluster analysis of sea lice infestation (Caligus clemensi and Lepeophtheirus salmonis) on wild juvenile Pacific salmon in the Broughton Archipelago of Canada.

Sea lice infestation levels on wild chum and pink salmon in the Broughton Archipelago region are known to vary spatially and temporally; however, the locations of areas associated with a high infestation level had not been investigated yet. In the present study, the multivariate spatial scan statistic based on a Poisson model was used to assess spatial clustering of elevated sea lice (Caligus clemensi and Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestation levels on wild chum and pink salmon sampled between March and July of 2004 to 2012 in the Broughton Archipelago and Knight Inlet regions of British Columb

Vaccination modality and injection site influence the immune response and protection against sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis infestation in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

Sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestations represent a challenge to Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) aquaculture. We evaluated recombinant peroxinectin-like proteins (LsPxtl-1 and LsPxtl-2) and whole sea lice (WSL) crude proteins as vaccine antigens, administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) or via a combination of i.p./subcutaneous fin-base injection (IP-F). Fish were immunized, boosted, smoltified, and challenged with copepodites, and systemic (plasma) and mucosal (mucus) antibody responses were assessed alongside lice burden. LsPxtl-1 (p < 0.05) reduced lice counts compared to PBS control

Ectoparasite communities of small-bodied Malagasy primates: seasonal and socioecological influences on tick, mite and lice infestation of Microcebus murinus and M. ravelobensis in northwestern Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Ectoparasitic infections are of particular interest for endangered wildlife, as ectoparasites are potential vectors for inter- and intraspecific pathogen transmission and may be indicators to assess the health status of endangered populations. Here, ectoparasite dynamics in sympatric populations of two Malagasy mouse lemur species, Microcebus murinus and M. ravelobensis, were investigated over an 11-month period. Furthermore, the animals' body mass was determined as an indicator of body condition, reflecting seasonal and environmental challenges. Living in sympatry, the two study s

The effect of educational intervention on efficacy of 1% permethrin shampoo and 4% dimeticone lotion to treat head lice infestation using propensity score matching (PSM).

BACKGROUND: Head lice are a main public health problem and the most important human ectoparasites and the use of pediculicides is the most common way to control it. One of the possible causes of treatment failure is the lack of improper application of pediculicide. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of education on efficacy of 1% permethrin or 4% dimeticone lotion to treat head lice infestation. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study included 100 individuals with head lice infestation from comprehensive urban health centers in Ardabil as the intervention group, and 400 individuals

Infestation patterns and ecological distribution of fleas and sucking lice on Rattus tanezumi in southwest China: Evidence from a long-term multi-provincial study (2000-2024).

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The oriental house rat (Rattus tanezumi) is a dominant commensal rodent in southwest China and an important reservoir host for multiple zoonotic pathogens. Fleas and sucking lice that parasitize this species play a critical role in the maintenance and transmission of flea-borne and louse-associated diseases. However, long-term, large-scale evidence on the infestation patterns, ecological distribution, and host-parasite relationships of these ectoparasites remains limited. This study aimed to comprehensively characterize the infestation status, community structure, and ecolo

Right acute hemiscrotum caused by insertion of an inflamed appendix.

Head lice infestations affect millions of people in the United States. Children become infested more often than adults and account for the largest percentage of infestations. Head lice have not been shown to transfer disease, and they are not associated with serious morbidity. The most common effect of lice infestation is pruritus of the scalp with occasional cutaneous infection caused by scratching. Nevertheless, many schools have "no-nit" policies, which require the dismissal of children from school if nits or lice are found. These policies are ineffective in preventing infestations and resu…

Comparative analysis of long non-coding RNAs in Atlantic and Coho salmon reveals divergent transcriptome responses associated with immunity and tissue repair during sea lice infestation.

The increasing capacity of transcriptomic analysis by high throughput sequencing has highlighted the presence of a large proportion of transcripts that do not encode proteins. In particular, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are sequences with low coding potential and conservation among species. Moreover, cumulative evidence has revealed important roles in post-transcriptional gene modulation in several taxa. In fish, the role of lncRNAs has been scarcely studied and even less so during the immune response against sea lice. In the present study we mined for lncRNAs in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar

Sea Lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) Infestation Reduces the Ability of Peripheral Blood Monocytic Cells (PBMCs) to Respond to and Control Replication of Salmonid Alphavirus in Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar L.).

Here we have studied the impact of lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestation of donor fish on the ability of isolated peripheral blood monocytes (PMBCs) to control the replication of salmonid alphavirus (SAV) ex vivo. PMBC were collected by Percoll gradients at eight and nine weeks post copepodid infestation of Atlantic salmon post smolt. Uninfested fish were controls. PBMCs were then infected ex vivo with SAV (subtype 3), and samples were collected for analysis at two, four, and six days post virus infection. Virus titer in the supernatant was assayed in CHH-1 cells, and in addition, the rel

High prevalence of knockdown resistance mutations, genetic clade diversity, and detection of Acinetobacter species in head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) infesting children in a Thai orphanage: A comprehensive survey.

Pediculosis, caused by the head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis), remains a public health challenge among school-aged children. The emergence of resistance to pyrethroid insecticides associated with mutations in the knockdown resistance (kdr) genes may hinder control efforts. Furthermore, head lice have been implicated as potential vectors for bacterial pathogens, raising concerns about their role in disease transmission. Head lice collected from children in an orphanage were analyzed for genetic diversity, kdr-mutation resistance, and the presence of bacterial pathogens. A total of 107 lice
