Predictive factors in repeated suicide attempts by adolescents.

A significant number of adolescents treated for attempted suicide have made previous attempts and will make subsequent attempts. These youths have a high risk of actually committing suicide. To find predictive factors of suicide risk, the authors compared 43 adolescent patients who had attempted suicide once with 38 who reported multiple attempts. The repeaters were less successful in school, displayed more hostility, reported more dysphoria, and had undergone more long-term stress. The authors believe assessing suicide risk requires evaluating the repeater's internal state of rage and dysphor

[Existential events and depression. Comparative study of several types of depressed patients].

The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between the occurrence of life events and depression with a special emphasis on their impact (assessed through a 0-100 point scale) on psychopathological risk. In order to assess this influence, three groups of 50 depressed patients and three groups of 50 controls filled up a 53 items life stressfull events schedule. Results show that the way in which life events were construed is more relevant than their actual number in explaining the subject vulnerability as well as in predicting high risk subjects.

Life events and depression in women: a structural equation model.

A non-recursive structural equation model designed to examine the reciprocal relationship between life event reports and depressive symptoms in women is presented. The model was fitted to data from a 2-year longitudinal study of life events and depression in a sample of women with 5-year-old children. The findings suggest that life event reports may be influenced by mental state; however, even when this tendency is taken into account, there is still a substantial relationship between life events and depressive symptoms in women. This indicates that it is unlikely that the life events/depressio

Personal versus situational determination of anticipation and control of the occurrence of stressful life events.

A wide variety of laboratory and clinical studies have indicated that stressful events are most harmful when they are perceived as uncontrollable. However, these studies diverge on the question of whether perceptions of control of stressful events are determined by environmental contingencies associated with the events or by a stable expectancy of the perceiver. In a community study 118 respondents were asked to report stressful life events experienced in the last year and were then asked to what extent they anticipated and controlled the occurrence of each event. Data were collected in two wa

Nutrition and cognitive health: A life course approach.

Multiple factors affect cognitive health, such as age-related changes in the brain, injuries, mood disorders, substance abuse, and diseases. While some cannot be changed, evidence exists of many potentially possibly modifiable lifestyle factors: diet, physical activity, cognitive and social engagement, smoking and alcohol consumption which may stabilize or improve declining cognitive function. In nutrition, the focus has been mainly on its role in brain development in the early years. There is a strong emerging need to identify the role of diet and nutrition factors on age-related cognitive de

The Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) 4.0 as an assessment measure for depressive symptoms: a correlational study with young adolescents.

Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is today considered an important assessment measurement, but still only a few measures assess HRQOL outcomes for children and adolescents. One of them is the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL). This correlation study explored the associations between depressive symptoms in young adolescents and the PedsQL scores when controlling for known risk factors. An adolescent sample (n=425) completed a battery of measures including the PedsQL Norwegian version, the Short Mood and Feeling Questionnaire (SMFQ), the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory for ch

Prospective associations between stressful life course events and clusters of lifestyle behaviours.

BACKGROUND: The adoption of health-damaging lifestyle behaviours may be a coping mechanism stemming from maladaptive behavioural stress response to stress exposure, but little is known about the influence of stressors on health-damaging lifestyle behaviour clusters. This study aimed to identify clusters of lifestyle behaviours based on six lifestyle-related behaviours and to examine the associations between childhood adversity, stressful and traumatic life events, and the clusters of lifestyle behaviours in community-dwelling Australian adults. METHODS: This prospective study comprises 1773 a

R.D. Laing: creative analyst or false prophet?

One of R.D. Laing's recent books 'Politics of experience' is discussed from a critical point of view. In his first books Laing defined the schizophrenic as a sensitive person who was squeezed into the 'double-bind' messages of his intimates. In the book discussed here, Laing views the schizoid experience as a symbol of health. He suggests that everyone use this schizoid experience as a means of rediscovering his lost 'real' self by divesting oneself of society and its evils. This change in Laing's writings is viewed here critically: instead of urging us to find a way to change society, as ques

'What doesn't kill you doesn't always make you stronger': The impact of repeated exposure to adverse life events on mental health.

BACKGROUND: Repeated exposure to adversity is universal to the human experience and may impact mental health negatively. However, competing hypotheses predict that repeated adversity leads to either sensitisation or habituation. METHODS: Using a 22-year Australian population-based panel study, we examined changes in mental health following repeated exposure to seven common adverse life events in adulthood. Mixed-effects regression models estimated the relationship between repeated exposure to adverse life events of the same type and its impact on the Mental Health Inventory-5 score. RESULTS:

Pubertal timing: A life course pathway linking early life risk to adulthood cardiometabolic health.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a series of prospective life course models testing whether the timing of pubertal development is a pathway through which prepubertal risk factors may influence adulthood cardiometabolic health. METHODS: Subjects were 655 female participants in the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD) and recent SECCYD 30-year follow-up, the Study of Health in Early and Adult Life (SHINE). Prepubertal risk factors included maternal menarcheal age, child race/ethnicity, child health status indicators, and child adversity indicators. Pubertal timing was indexed by

"The great escape": how an incident of elopement gave rise to trauma informed palliative care for a patient experiencing multiple disadvantage.

BACKGROUND: This case report from Scotland, UK illustrates how unresolved traumatic experiences across the life course can affect a patient's engagement with palliative care and offers insights into the flexibility and adaptations necessary for taking a trauma informed approach to care for an individual experiencing multiple disadvantage. Trauma informed care is a cornerstone in the pursuit of equitable palliative care, particularly for those facing multiple disadvantage, as it acknowledges the impact of past traumas on current healthcare experiences, and fosters an environment of understandin

Resistance to Sunk Cost Propensity Moderate Relationship between Negative Life Event and Hopelessness.

Previous research has found that a negative life event is a main risk factor for hopelessness, which in turn is considered to be a proximal cause of major depression disorder and a suicide risk factor. Unfortunately, very little attention has been paid to the role of decision-making constructs between negative life events and hopelessness. To fill this gap, the present study aims to test the moderation role of sunk cost propensity in this relationship, which is an over-generalized tendency to persist, based on past investment. A total of 495 university students completed assessment of their re

Positive health and ageing policies for older Irish travellers and older people who have experienced homelessness in Ireland: Life-course meanings and determinants.

Marginalised groups of older people remain neglected in positive health and ageing (PHA) agendas, whether they concern healthy or active ageing concepts. Questions exist around the meaning of such constructs and the factors that enable disadvantaged populations to achieve equitable later-life experiences. Focusing on two such groups in Ireland, this study investigates the constituent dimensions of PHA for older Irish Travellers and older people who have experienced homelessness and the role of life-course and structural determinants in constructing PHA trajectories for these groups. The study

The Life-Course Perspectives of Mexican American Men With Mobility Limitation.

The life-history narratives of 10 Mexican American men with mobility limitations, age 55-77 years (mean = 63.8, SD = 5.8), were explored using a qualitatively driven, life-history mixed-methods study to understand perceptions of mobility limitations over the life course. Within that methodological and paradigmatic framework, conceptualizations of alterity and masculinity guided interpretation of data. Through an iterative, thematic analysis, we detail the way the men's lives were influenced by growing familial responsibility with age. Quantitative data were integrated into themes of narrative

Fatherhood, Behavioral Health, and Criminal Legal System Contact over the Life Course.

Life course theories suggest that fathers' lifetime criminal legal system contact could contribute to poor parent-child outcomes via deterioration in couple relationship quality and fathers' behavioral health. Using paired, longitudinal data from the Multi-site Family Study (N = 1,112 couples), the current study examines the influence of three dimensions of fathers' life course legal system contact on individual and parent-child outcomes. In fitted models, accumulated system contact in adulthood predicts fathers' later depressive symptoms and drug misuse, which in turn predict diminished fathe

Utility of SCORE2 risk algorithm for predicting life course accelerated frailty and physical function decline.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a dynamic process that increases with ageing, while it remains unclear whether cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk algorithm could predict life course dynamic frailty trajectories, for example, the longitudinal patterns of how frailty evolves with time. We intended to examine the predictive utility of the Systemic Coronary Risk Estimation 2 (SCORE2) algorithm for life course accelerated frailty and physical function decline, in comparison with the precedent SCORE algorithm. METHODS: Longitudinal data regarding accumulation of deficits frailty index (FI) and physical funct
