Lateral arcuate ligaments of the diaphragm: anatomic variations at abdominal CT.

The authors have occasionally observed nodular areas abutting the lateral diaphragmatic surface and extending into the posterior pararenal space on computed tomographic (CT) scans. Review of the anatomy literature revealed that this finding represents inferolateral extension of the lateral arcuate ligaments, which reflect over the quadratus lumborum muscles to fuse with the diaphragm. CT scans from 100 consecutive patients were reviewed to determine the frequency, relationship to habitus, and appearance of this finding. Nodularity was found in five patients (bilateral in three, unilateral in t

[The intermetatarsal transverse ligaments and their connections with the tarsometatarsal articulations].

The authors have performed 20 systematical dissections of the distal part of the foot, conserved in the Toulon's liquor and 3 dissections of fresh cadavers. The last ones have been submitted at different puttings in charge before and after the resection of the intermetatarsal transverse ligament. The intermetatarsal transverse ligament is supple, extensible, but very strong. It constitutes the area of convergence of all the neighbouring fibrous structures and of several tendons of the foot. It connects together the heads of the metatarsus. It renders them jointly liable and its action is refle

[Expediency of closed plastic surgery of ligaments of the knee joint].

In most patients with long-standing injuries of ligaments of the knee joint there develops a deforming arthrosis. So, the operative techniques of recovering their stability must be at most sparing. The author thinks the use of "closed" methods of plasty of the ligaments to be expedient. He has elaborated two new methods of operations which were recognized as inventions. Operations were made on 47 patients with good results observed up to 3.5 years.

Posterior pubo-urethral ligaments in normal and genuine stress incontinent women.

Specimens of the posterior pubo-urethral ligament were taken from 10 continent females (7 at post mortem and 3 at gynaecological surgery) and from 9 genuine stress incontinent patients. They were examined and compared using light and electron microscopy and neuro-histochemistry. The morphology of all specimens was similar in that they contained dense connective tissue elements enclosing smooth muscle bundles which were associated with numerous nerves, the enzyme content and fine structure of which were similar to those believed to represent cholinergic autonomic nerves. There was no difference

Conservative treatment of injury to the fibular ligaments of the ankle.

Fifty-one patients with fibular ligamentous injury of the ankle are presented. The treatment consisted of complete non-weight-bearing of the affected foot by use of elbow crutches for three weeks. All patients were seen at follow-up eighteen months after the accident. The results are discussed in the light of previous literature on conservative and operative treatment of lateral ligament injuries.

Redefining all check ligaments of extraocular muscles using true color sectioned images.

PURPOSE: Visualizing the check ligaments of extraocular muscles is essential to understand their role as stabilizers of the extra-ocular muscles, acting as their antagonists. Although all extraocular muscles are expected to have corresponding check ligaments, this is not consistently documented in anatomical literature. This study aims to clarify the check ligaments using acquired high-resolution true color sectioned images and surface modeling. METHODS: From the sectioned images of one male cadaver, the check ligaments and related structures were outlined and surfaces models were reconstructe

Role of puboprostatic and pubovesical ligaments in urinary incontinence: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The puboprostatic ligament (PPL) and the pubovesical ligament (PVL) are critical anatomical structures that play a significant role in maintaining urinary continence by supporting the urethra and bladder neck. Despite their well-documented functions, the impact on continence outcomes of preserving or reconstructing these ligaments during surgical procedures, particularly radical prostatectomy, remains underexplored. This systematic review synthesises current evidence on the anatomy, function, and clinical implications of the PPL and PVL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive lite

Melatonin supplementation counteracts fiber loss in knee ligaments of diabetes-induced rats.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a prevalent metabolic disease. The clinical impact of sustained hyperglycemia on ligament healing has not been well characterized. Diabetes is a known cause of macro-, microvascular, and diabetic ulcer healing difficulties among tissues. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the healing potential occurring in injured and healthy ligaments among diabetic and healthy individuals using a rat model. We hypothesize that DM may contribute to altering the knee medial collateral ligament (MCL), thus its morphology, biochemical fitness, and functionality. The study cohort consist

Isolation and Characterization of the Murine Uterosacral Ligaments and Pelvic Floor Organs.

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a condition that affects the integrity, structure, and mechanical support of the pelvic floor. The organs in the pelvic floor are supported by different anatomical structures, including muscles, ligaments, and pelvic fascia. The uterosacral ligament (USL) is a critical load-bearing structure, and injury to the USL results in a higher risk of developing POP. The present protocol describes the dissection of murine USLs and the pelvic floor organs alongside the acquisition of unique data on the USL biochemical composition and function using Raman spectroscopy and th

In-plane and out-of-plane deformations of gilt utero-sacral ligaments.

The uterosacral ligaments (USLs) are supportive structures of the uterus and apical vagina. The mechanical function of these ligaments within the pelvic floor is crucial not only in normal physiological conditions but also in reconstructive surgeries for pelvic organ prolapse. Discrepancies in their anatomical and histological description exist in the literature, but such discrepancies are likely due to large variations of these structures. This makes mechanical testing very challenging, requiring the development of advanced methods for characterizing their mechanical properties. This study pr

Replication of the tensile behavior of knee ligaments using architected acrylic yarn.

Knee ligament injury diagnosis is achieved by a comparison between the laxity levels sensed by a clinician in the injured and healthy limb. This is a difficult-to-learn task that requires hands-on practice to achieve proficiency. The inclusion of a physical knee simulator with biomechanically realistic passive components such as knee ligaments could provide consistent training for medical students and lead to improved care for knee injury patients. In this study, we developed a material construct that is both adaptable to a physical knee model and capable of replicating the non-linear mechanic

Sonoanatomy and Stepwise/Systematic Ultrasound Examination of the Extrinsic/Intrinsic Wrist Ligaments.

Ultrasound has emerged as the most useful imaging tool for investigating wrist and hand disorders, with several published ultrasound protocols having demonstrated their practicality in scanning the wrist tendons and nerves. However, ligaments of the wrist are networked in a complex manner, deterring sonographers from examining them with an organized strategy. Furthermore, because of the non-parallel alignment between the radiocarpal, mid-carpal, and carpal-metacarpal joints, precise recognition of the carpal bones is challenging, although ultrasound is paramount for visualizing the wrist ligam

No tunnel widening following arthroscopic anatomical reconstruction of the lateral ankle ligaments.

INTRODUCTION: Arthroscopic anatomical reconstruction of the lateral ankle ligaments is an emerging technique for treating chronic ankle instability. One of the known complications of arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is tunnel widening; this makes revision more complicated. The aim of this study was to look for tunnel widening in the postoperative course of arthroscopic ankle ligament reconstruction. We hypothesized that significant widening of the bone tunnels is present 1 year after anatomical ankle ligament reconstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients who

Functional stability: an experimental knee joint cadaveric study on collateral ligaments tension.

INTRODUCTION: Applying proper tension to collateral ligaments during total knee arthroplasty surgery is fundamental to achieve optimal implant performance: low tension could lead to joint instability, over-tensioning leads to pain and stiffness. A "functional stability" must be defined and achieved during surgery to guarantee optimal results. In this study, an experimental cadaveric activity was performed to measure the minimum tension required to achieve knee functional stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten knee specimens were investigated; femur and tibia were fixed in specifically designed

Syndesmotic Ligaments of the Ankle: Anatomy, Multimodality Imaging, and Patterns of Injury.

Injuries to the syndesmotic ligaments of the ankle or "high ankle sprains" are common in acute ankle trauma but can be difficult to diagnose both clinically and on imaging. Missed injuries to the syndesmosis can lead to chronic ankle instability, which can cause persistent pain and lead to early osteoarthritis. This review will illustrate the anatomy of the syndesmotic ligamentous complex, describe radiographic, CT, and MR imaging of the syndesmosis, demonstrate typical mechanisms of injuries and associated fracture patterns, and provide an overview of important management considerations.
