Linguistic Abnormalities in Isolated Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with synucleinopathies frequently display language abnormalities. However, whether patients with isolated rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) have prodromal language impairment remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether the linguistic abnormalities in iRBD can serve as potential biomarkers for conversion to synucleinopathy, including the possible effect of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), speaking task, and automation of analysis procedure. METHODS: We enrolled 139 Czech native participants, including 40 iRBD without MCI and 14 iRBD with MCI, compared

Translation, cultural adaptation and linguistic validation of the pectus excavatum evaluation questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Pectus excavatum often imposes significant burden on the patients' quality of life. However, despite the known biopsychosocial effects, the deformity remains underappreciated. Patient reported outcome measures can be used to measure and appreciate results from a patient's perspective. The pectus excavatum evaluation questionnaire (PEEQ) is the most employed disease specific instrument to measure patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). A translation and linguistic validation of this questionnaire is presented for its use in the Dutch pediatric pectus excavatum population. By prov

Cross-linguistic transfer in Turkish-English bilinguals' descriptions of motion events.

Languages differ in how they express motion: Languages like English prefer to conflate manner and path into the same clause and express both elements frequently while languages like Turkish prefer to express these elements separately, with a greater preference for the expression of path of motion. While typological patterns are well-established for monolingual speakers of a variety of languages, relatively less is known about motion expression in bilingual speakers. The current study examined the packaging (expressing each element in separate clauses or within the same clause) and lexical choi

Linguistic feature of anorexia nervosa: a prospective case-control pilot study.

PURPOSE: Attention has recently been paid to Clinical Linguistics for the detection and support of clinical conditions. Many works have been published on the "linguistic profile" of various clinical populations, but very few papers have been devoted to linguistic changes in patients with eating disorders. Patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) share similar psychological features such as disturbances in self-perceived body image, inflexible and obsessive thinking and anxious or depressive traits. We hypothesize that these characteristics can result in altered linguistic patterns and be detected u…

Parents' linguistic strategies in interaction with their children with history of cleft lip and/or palate.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) presents a rather complex challenge that requires understanding beyond biological or clinical perspective. Even though inaccuracies in speech articulation are the common consequences of CL/P, individuals with repaired CL/P are likely to experience other language-associated issues. Studies on social interaction have generally reported the children to be passive interlocutors, despite having their surgical treatment at the early stages of life. AIMS: This study aims to describe the linguistic strategies that parents employ when interacting with their r

Linguistic Relevance and Applicability of the Spanish VHI-10 in a Population outside Spain.

INTRODUCTION: The Voice Handicap Index 10 (VHI-10) has been translated to many languages. There are substantial differences between the translation methods. Translated questionnaires without appropriate linguistic validation may not capture cultural differences or be understood by the participants in the manner intended by the original developers. This also holds true between dialects within a language. There are two versions of the VHI-10 in Spanish, both translated in Spain. Considering the cultural and dialectical differences amongst Spanish speakers, it is hypothesized that these translati

Top-Down Cognitive and Linguistic Influences on the Suppression of Spontaneous Otoacoustic Emissions.

Auditory sensation is often thought of as a bottom-up process, yet the brain exerts top-down control to affect how and what we hear. We report the discovery that the magnitude of top-down influence varies across individuals as a result of differences in linguistic background and executive function. Participants were 32 normal-hearing individuals (23 female) varying in language background (11 English monolinguals, 10 Korean-English late bilinguals, and 11 Korean-English early bilinguals), as well as cognitive abilities (working memory, cognitive control). To assess efferent control over inner e

Increasing Cultural And Linguistic Diversity In Deaf Education Teacher Preparation Programs.

As the field of education of the d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) continues to diversify, postsecondary institutions must pay close attention not only to the changing needs of d/Dhh students but to the practitioners they are preparing to serve this population. Students who are d/Dhh and come from homes where a language other than English or American Sign Language is used--d/Dhh Multilingual Learners (DMLs)--constitute 19.4%-35.0% of the d/Dhh student population (Gallaudet Research Institute, 2013). Neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) translation and linguistic validation to classical Arabic.

OBJECTIVE: To translate and linguistically validate in classical Arabic; the French version of the neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Arabic translation of the NBD score was obtained by the "forward translation/backword translation" method. Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and spinal cord injury were included. Evaluation of intestinal and anorectal disorders was conducted by the self-administered questionnaire NBD, which was filled twice two weeks apart. An item-by-item analysis was made. The feasibility, acceptability, internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha,

Understanding Online Health Groups for Depression: Social Network and Linguistic Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems have become increasingly prevalent in the past decade. With the advance of Web 2.0 technologies, social media present a novel platform for Web users to form online health groups. Members of online health groups discuss health-related issues and mutually help one another by anonymously revealing their mental conditions, sharing personal experiences, exchanging health information, and providing suggestions and support. The conversations in online health groups contain valuable information to facilitate the understanding of their mutual help behaviors and their

Cognitive, Linguistic, and Motor Abilities in a Multigenerational Family with Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

OBJECTIVE: This study describes the phenotype in a large family with a strong, multigenerational history of severe speech sound disorder (SSD) persisting into adolescence and adulthood in approximately half the cases. Aims were to determine whether a core phenotype, broader than speech, separated persistent from resolved SSD cases; and to ascertain the uniqueness of the phenotype relative to published cases. METHOD: Eleven members of the PM family (9-55 years) were assessed across cognitive, language, literacy, speech, phonological processing, numeracy, and motor domains. Between group compar

The premature ejaculation diagnostic tool (PEDT): linguistic validity of the Chinese version.

INTRODUCTION: The premature ejaculation diagnostic tool (PEDT) was developed to standardize the diagnosis of PE and has been applied in many countries. However, a linguistic validation of the Chinese version of PEDT does not exist. AIMS: This study aims to undertake the Chinese validation of the PEDT and to evaluate its association with self-estimated intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) and clinical expert diagnosis of PE. METHODS: A Chinese version of PEDT was confirmed by andrologist and bilingual linguist. Participants were recruited among seven different communities of Shanghai

Cross-linguistic similarity and task demands in Japanese-English bilingual processing.

Even in languages that do not share script, bilinguals process cognates faster than matched noncognates in a range of tasks. The current research more fully explores what underpins the cognate 'advantage' in different script bilinguals (Japanese-English). To do this, instead of the more traditional binary cognate/noncognate distinction, the current study uses continuous measures of phonological and semantic overlap, L2 (second language) proficiency and lexical variables (e.g., frequency). An L2 picture naming (Experiment 1) revealed a significant interaction between phonological and semantic s

Self-representation in social anxiety disorder: linguistic analysis of autobiographical narratives.

Cognitive models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) posit aberrant beliefs about the social self as a key psychological mechanism that maintains fear of negative evaluation in social and performance situations. Consequently, a distorted self-view should be evident when recalling painful autobiographical social memories, as reflected in linguistic expression, negative self-beliefs, and emotion and avoidance. To test this hypothesis, 42 adults diagnosed with SAD and 27 non-psychiatric healthy controls (HC) composed autobiographical narratives of distinct social anxiety related situations, generate

Delta EEG activity as a marker of dysfunctional linguistic processing in developmental dyslexia.

The present study used delta EEG band to test the hypothesis of a cerebral maturational delay and a functional altered cerebral asymmetry for phonological processing in dyslexic children. A group of 14 children with dyslexia and 28 matched controls participated in a linguistic paradigm in which the same words were processed in three tasks: phonological, semantic, and orthographic. Delta amplitude was computed as an index of cortical inhibition in four different phases of word processing. In anterior sites, controls showed left activation (reduced delta) during the phonological task and bilater

Dissociating object familiarity from linguistic properties in mirror word reading.

BACKGROUND: It is known that the orthographic properties of linguistic stimuli are processed within the left occipitotemporal cortex at about 150-200 ms. We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) to words in standard or mirror orientation to investigate the role of visual word form in reading. Word inversion was performed to determine whether rotated words lose their linguistic properties. METHODS: About 1300 Italian words and legal pseudo-words were presented to 18 right-handed Italian students engaged in a letter detection task. EEG was recorded from 128 scalp sites. RESULTS: ERPs showed

Working with linguistically diverse families in early intervention: misconceptions and missed opportunities.

Traditionally, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and other professionals have held the belief that children with speech and language disabilities are unable to successfully learn more than one language. It is often automatically assumed that exposing young children to two languages will cause confusion and significant delays in the learning of any language. Because of this belief, many families have been influenced to give up their home language in their efforts to ensure their child's successful learning of English. Yet it has been documented that children who are learning two languages sim

Grammar and lexicon in facilitated communication: a linguistic authorship analysis of a Finnish case.

This case study adds a new dimension to the discourse on the authorship issue in facilitated communication. The linguistic structure produced by a young Finnish man with severe cerebral palsy was examined. Data are based on transcripts he produced from 1993 until 1996 after facilitated communication had been introduced to him. In the data analysis, as explicit criteria for his idiosyncrasies, we used patterns typical of children acquiring Finnish as their first language and those found in normal slips of the tongue, acquired aphasia, and specific language impairment. Based on the analysis (i.e

Lexical agraphia. Further support for the two-system hypothesis of linguistic agraphia.

Eight patients with acquired agraphia were studied using the same writing tests and were compared with normal and brain-damaged controls. Four patients fulfilled the criteria for lexical agraphia and on CT scan had lesions of the posterior angular gyrus that spared the supramarginal gyrus. The other 4 fulfilled the criteria for phonological agraphia. They had lesions on CT scan that were similar to those found in previously described patients with phonological agraphia. Their lesions involved the supramarginal gyrus or insula deep to it and spared the angular gyrus. These studies support the h

Children's memory for recurring linguistic and nonlinguistic material in relation to reading ability.

Good beginning readers typically surpass poor beginning readers in memory for linguistic material such as syllables, words, and sentences. Here we present evidence that this interaction between reading ability and memory performance does not extend to memory for nonlinguistic material like faces and nonsense designs. Using an adaptation of the continuous recognition memory paradigm of Kimura (1963) we assessed the ability of good and poor readers in the second grade to remember three different types of material: photographs of unfamiliar faces, nonsense designs, and printed nonsense syllables.
