In this chapter, we describe the application of lipases as catalysts in the synthesis of structurally different amides with pharmacological activities. Numerous products, many of them new compounds, were obtained in very good to excellent yield and a highly regioselective manner. The influence of various reaction parameters in the enzymatic reactions, such as enzyme source, nucleophile/substrate ratio, enzyme/substrate ratio, solvent, and temperature, was examined for each case.

Lipases and cutinases have had different applications in the food and textile industries, fuel production, and recently in processes that help the environment, such as plastic degradation. Biotechnological alternatives have been proposed to mitigate plastic residues, such as the production of biodegradable bioplastics that are based on biological and renewable resources and the biodegradation using enzymes capable of carrying out the depolymerization process, where cutinases and lipases from phytopathogenic and saprobic fungi play an important role.

Ninety percent of plasma fatty acids (FAs) are contained within lipoprotein-triglyceride, and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is robustly expressed in the heart. Hence, LPL-mediated lipolysis of lipoproteins is suggested to be a key source of FAs for cardiac use. Lipoprotein clearance by LPL occurs at the apical surface of the endothelial cell lining of the coronary lumen. More than 50% of sepsis cases are associated with pneumonia. Sepsis is caused by infiltration of bacteria into the blood via inflammation, which is triggered by the release of cell wall components following lysis. However, the regulatory mechanism of lysis during infection is not well defined. Mice were infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae D39 wild-type (WT) and lipase mutant (ΔlipA) intranasally (pneumonia model) or intraperitoneally (sepsis model), and survival rate and pneumococcal colonization were determined. LipA and autolysin (LytA) levels were determined by qPCR and western blotting.

The marked clinical heterogeneity of CLL makes early prognosis assessment important. Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) has been shown to confer adverse prognosis in CLL, recent data indicating it might also contribute to CLL cell survival and metabolism. Three employees from two different detergent companies were investigated for occupational asthma, using skin prick tests, serum specific IgE, and specific bronchial challenge. The origin of preduodenal lipases was investigated in the suckling dog. In this species, gastric lipase is the main (or only) preduodenal lipase (activity range 1.03-8.32 U/mg protein), lingual-lipase activity being absent or amounting to traces only (0.77-2.3 mU/mg tissue). The localization of lipase activity in the stomach was mapped and compared to that of pepsin.
